Its just something to move converstation on instead of going into some lengthy converstation.

not to mention the fact that no one wants to hear how bad your day really is.

im sure i spin a few during the course of an average day, but im honest with my kids and friends, thats what really matters.

I just read an article that claims this. The "lies" can be little white lies like when you tell a child something to make it easier for him/her to understand or when you tell a fib to avoid hurting someone's feelings.

Do you think you average 4 lies a day? more or less?

less.

I lie less than that. You will have to decide if I lied in the last sentence though.

I lie way more than 4 times a day, so I'm doing my part to up the average for all the goodie-goodies around me.

In a rare twist, this post does not contain a single lie.

hmm. i like to think that i lie very rarely. my guilt is over active so I have a really hard time not telling the truth. but 4x times a day??? that seems reasonable.

Ah, another made up stat like how many times men think about sex a day.

When throwing kids and the white lies and impartial truths we tell them into the mix I would say this is close to accurate.

Hardly surprising. We been taught to lie from day one.

Take any persuasive speech, business, or political classes and you'll see it's even being promoted in your adult years.

What do you consider the grey matter between truth and a lie? If you consider it a lie then yes, 4x a day is easily reached. We work in jobs that require us to constantly cover our asses and look awesome. White lies are the norm, masking the complete truth is par for the course. The people that don't have to CYA as much as others are the real heros of our time, but no one is perfect.

But hey, if you consider the grey matter to be truthful until it crosses that final line of a lie then you are in the clear. Rarely do we tell a bold lie. And if the grey matter is it's own category then you can consider it anything you want; whatever makes your day less stressful.

Yeah, lots of times we don't really lie, but we do downplay the intensity of our opinions and emotions: "Great, you just broke my sculpture. Well...it's not THAT big a deal, really. I'm kind of angry, but I guess I can make another."
The question is how much we're stretching the truth. If you take the absolutist view, EVERYTHING we say is a lie, since due to the nature of language we are never able to create a perfect picture of what we intend in the minds of other people. Even describing a solid, tangible object won't yield a perfect image, and that's without stating a single thing that isn't 100% true!

But then there's: "You are probably the most interesting and intelligent person I have ever met!"--which is clearly a lie, since I have met myself.:p
