I support Bernie, but I realize that many of his fans are merely the left wing equivalent of Ron Paul supporters. This I suppose is a consequence of being young and politically involved which necessarily bad thing. In the end I'm not sure who would have made the better president. The biggest thing that stands out about Bernie is that he has a backbone which is sorely lacking among liberals and the democratic party as a whole. However there is something to be said about being too ahead of your time. Presidents are confined to the time period of their tenure and his policies won't last if we don't have a very solid majority on board with them. Plus being a political outsider would also be a burden on the effectiveness of his leadership. Politics is and always has been a dirty business and even our most revered historical leaders have done things they aren't proud of. I feel as if a good president isn't someone who would sell their soul to the devil, but should consider putting up for rent from time to time.
In the end I feel that Bernie and Trump both have changed things and probably for the better. This election year will be an historical turning point for both parties which will likely result in the formation of a new party. The last several decades of racial and bigoted undertones have finally caught up the G.O.P. and recovering their image after Trump and Cruz will be nearly impossible. By 2020 Generation Z will start voting and all Millennials and will be eligible to vote and these are groups who by and large share very little in common with the G.O.P.. Looking back on past presidential elections; Republicans have been on a relatively steady decline since 1992. Bush 41 was the last Republican to acquire more than 300 electoral votes and his son barely won the 2000 and 2004 elections.
In end I don't feel that Hillary will be a bad president but I wouldn't be surprised if the liberal side of the Democratic party leaves to form a new party as it takes in the more moderate/establishment members republican party (Koch's recent nod to Hillary is an indication of things to come).
The transition will likely mirror the transition (albeit faster) of the south switching over to the republican party which began with FDR but wasn't finished until the end of Clinton's final term.
Trump won't be able to undo the damage that he as done with minorities and their votes matter more than ever. Florida is a very important state (arguably more than Ohio due to electoral count) and has a high immigrant population and it's one that he cannot afford to lose.
Overall I feel positive about this election year despite all of the madness. Bernie may not have won but will only be a footnote in history but he has changed the forever and I think we as people will begin to demand better of our leaders in the future.
