I suspect stores want aesthetics along with making the online store not too easy to shop so slickdealers don't have the time to look too deep.

What the fuck is the obsession with the operating system. An operating system is responsible for managing the system resources, and providing a platform for APPLICATIONS to run on. The only "Windows" thing I really use, and infrequently, is the file explorer. 99.9% of the time I'm running third party applications, and as long as the OS is stable (doesn't crash) and manages input and output from the application, what that OS is, is irrelevant.

Even considering apps/utilities that are part of the OS, there are far superior third party and open source alternatives. Searching for a file? Windows explorer takes forever... the "Everything" application displays results as fast as I can type in part of the file name. When running on remote computers, allows equally fast searches on the remote computer via a browser.
 
Eh, changing websites doesn't really bother me as long as the stuff I need is still there. What does bother me was the trend about 1 to 2 years ago for medium grey fonts on a light grey background. Just about every bank did that at about the same time. It was just an awful experience simply for the point of being awful.
 
I get the need for security for any website for financial information, or personal (no not facebook or twitter), but stuff like doctor's office portals. FB and twitter are a no-brainer, don't put personal stuff on there, cause no one gives a damn in the first place

I use long passwords that are total gibberish, generated by a password manager. Some use 2FA measures, some are simple enough, i.e. a code sent to my phone, which is great if I'm on a laptop/desktop, but makes zero sense if I'm on my phone.

Third party, such as Zenkey, requires an app on my phone... PIA, and relates only to a couple of sites. Then there is ID.me, DS Login, Login.gov, and likely many more I have not encountered. Each requiring you set up an account with these authentication services.

Some apps on my phone use my fingerprint, which is great in that's in simple, fast, and likely good security... combined with the fact the fingerprint reader on my Pixel phone is excellent. The wife's fingerprint reader on her Samsung phone, not so much.

The search USED to be better. What really sticks in my craw is that now sometimes in File Explorer, simply navigating to a new directory/folder sometimes provides the prompt "Working on it" before you can see the contents of the folder. Even if it's just a small directory with maybe 10 small files in it. And I'm still salty about them taking away the detail at the bottom of a File Explorer window that told you how much the files in that directory totaled, and how much drive space was free. Now instead you only get "99 items" or whatever, plenty of space there to still show the old details...

The OS front end is the entire user experience of using the computer. A bad OS makes for a bad experience all around.
 
As well as care/feeding of the OS. It does more than sit there out of the way. It has to be regularly dealt with.

I launch an app, and unless the OS is so FUBAR that it takes more than a click or two, my entire user experience with the OS is done, and now I'm in the app.

2 seconds tops of the grand "user experience" to start a program, then spend hours in that app, how the fuck does the OS make that the "entire user experience", assuming of course the OS doesn't crash, or so mismanage the resources so that the app runs out of memory?

You responded using a browser, can you really tell what the underlying OS is while you are doing that? Be it W10, W11, Apple, Linux, Chrome OS, it would take a sharp eye to discern the difference.

There is more to using the computer than just launching an app. You've obviously never actually worked in IT or did IT for family members or did anything that involves installing, setting up, configuring etc the computer or even making basic config changes.

filesystem behavior is massively better in linux though

a file contents search in ext is like 50 times faster than ntfs

file copying and deletion is way better too

Oh so wrong, my career was in IT. Started in mainframes, and ended up as a network specialist, with Cisco, Bay Networks (Nortel), Novell, and MS Server certifications. The OSs were my job, but had nothing to do with the "user experience" when I sat down to create a document, spreadsheet, etc. This was pre-office, when it was Word Perfect (blows groceries) and Lotus 123.

except Agile methodology uses train metaphors so onboarding is used.
 
Generally, I advise people not to direct their wailing and gnashing of teeth at IT.

Send that to who IT answers to. Try to understand that they get orders too, and just because a change is being implemented that doesn't automatically mean they are cool with it. Like most departments they tend to follow the direction of owners/management.

To really foul things up requires a computer.


To cause the loss of all hope of future function involves IT and stupid words.

Thrift Savings Plan .... it's a sort of 401K type thing for current and former federal employees and military.

Something over 5 years ago, the site was fine. No problems. Easy access to information about your account. Well sorted out.

Then they started tampering. Added that infernal code to phone or email every single time you wanted to log in. Not just for registering a device, but every bloomin' time. Then they disallowed the email and mandated a phone.



Then they went way out into deep space. Shut down all access for over a week. Killed everything that wasn't already committed to moviing funds in or out and even delayed some of those. Mandated a full re-registration of all members ... likely millions of people. Everyone must create a new account ID.

Except it doesn't work. You go through the whole process and are met with a blank screen. The new ID and PW you just created and was accepted by the system doesn't allow you to log in.

They got this new schmacny virtual assistant gizmo chat tool where you can request a live chat with an agent. Except you have to be logged in, which you can't do.

They post an 800 type number but caution about excess volume due to the new registration problems.

So, you call and deal with the equally infernal phone master that hates to let people through. You finally figure out how to get transferred to a person and the message says your expected wait time is 108 minutes.

What kind of IT moron crashes an entire working system, forces millions of people to create new IDs and then doesn't have enough support people on hand to deal with the mess?

WordPerfect 5.1 was amazing if you knew how to use it... but it wasn't exactly intuitive.
