Conservatives don't want democracy, because democracy allows 'undesirables' into the system.

It's no different than when people decry big government, but are perfectly OK with big companies in place of big government. It is not that a big entity is governing us, it's that the big entity tries to represent ALL it governs, where as conservatives just want a select few to be accounted for an listened to.
