i usually have a protein shake with glutamine, a multi-vitamin, and a serving of honey nut cheerios. Comes out to about 325 cals with the majority from Protein and carbs, minimal fat. Lots of sugar in the cheerios, but they are so delicious.

Does it matter if calories come from fat, vs some other source? Lets say there are two meals. One with 300 cals from protein, and one with 300 cals from fat. They are both equally filling. Is one better than the other?

Yes, they can affect the body in very different ways.

So the 300 cals from protein are better?

Well, there's certainly sugar and acid in the OJ, but it's not even close to a soda.

And multivitamins are crap. If you need them, you don't eat properly. If you eat properly, you don't need them.

Is that a good healthy well rounded breakfast?

If you're looking to fill up on pretty much only sugar then yes.

Bran Flakes, Skim Milk and a Banana. Some times I'll have a piece of whole wheat toast with a teaspoon of Peanut Butter spread on it with my cereal.

First, I am not a trainer, nutritionist, or anybody certified for giving any advice for this topic, I'm just speaking candidly.

I don't think "better" is a valid term for your question.

Looking at it from a very high level, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. 1 pound = 3500 calories, and to lose or gain you need to eat that much (or less) than what your body requires to maintain.

By carefully selecting the types of food you put in your body you can speed up fat loss or muscle gain to get to your target weights. Its true, you could theoretically become skinny eating nothing but big macs, or bulk up by eating nothing by carrot sticks but that wouldn't be efficient. The human body is excellent at adapting to its environment and does handle the processing of fat, protein, and carbohydrates differently.

thats my 2c anyway.

2/3 cup old fashioned oatmeal, pinch of salt, freshly grated nutmeg, 2 Splenda packets, and 1 cup low fat milk; stir throw in 1/2 cup fresh berries on top and let soak overnight in the frige. Also 1 hard boiled egg (whites only) on the side and 16 oz. water.

I have some of the most nonconventional breakfasts...

Coffee cake. Rum Cake. Cold pizza. Blueberry pie. Ham sammiches. PB&J sammiches. Egg & Cheese burritos. Cereal. Bagels. Dunkin Dognuts.

I don't think about what to eat/make. I just grab whatever sounds good that morning.

LOL, why half a banana?

I'm in a weightloss stage, so I don't need the extra calories. I know it isn't much, but I have to save 50 calories when I can. These are HUGE bananas by the way. If they were medium or small I'd eat a whole one.

but something with protein is your best bet. a lot of sugar just causes you to crash mid-morning and then snack.

How does that Kashi Go Lean taste?

Well my breakfasts are disgustingly large (~1500 calories). But..

Oatmeal, fruits, eggs, yogurt, toast, bagels, cereal + milk are all great. I love throwing some sausage patties on the George Foreman.

Kashi Go Lean sounds horrible. :D

Yogurt and granola is one of fav. "healthy" breakfast. That and good oatmeal (steel cut or regular rolled oats).

Its pretty horrible, IMO. You're looking at close to 100g of sugar first thing in the morning with no protein. And all of the sugar is the kind that makes a big insulin response.</blockquote>

yup, and you know what your body converts it to when it has all that sugar and a huge insulin spike?

I don't know about YOUR body, but in my case, it's "energy".

Seriously, some of you guys sound like you're designing minimum-survival rations for someone in a nursing home. If you do any physical activity, your body can handle a lot of extra crap that would normally be considered "unhealthy", and NEEDS carbohydrates.

I usually eat the healthy stuff (vitamins, greens, other metabolic necessities) later in the day, with lunch or dinner.

I need to find a good source for bulk (50+ pounds) of steel cut oats for cheap to add to my weight gainer shakes. Dense calories ftw!

Well, what do you want to get out of it? Meal replacement, weight gainer, protein supplement? Theres a zillion products out there, tastes vary according to brand and flavor. I've had some downright horrible ones and some almost good tasting ones.
