Answer what questions?

Who I am is not important, the preservation of a society. The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.

Hey Brah, as we say here, I didn't even protest the SuperFerry others didn't so don't think I'm the only one not wanting all of this, 10s of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands are not into this, don't point fingers thinking it's just me, it's not. I was just sharing the news and talking about it, and you bite my head off, LOL. ;)

Go back and read all my replies randay no one is down on anything, or anyone, I never said I was. :)

I've lived in real islands of the pacific with no electricity, no running water, no towns, no cars, and not even boats, just people fishing with dug out canoes, and I loved it.

Why do all western people think you need modern things to live, and enjoy?

Remember our great forefathers hundreds of years ago, many of them lived as long and as healthy as us, with out these modern conveniences.

Apparently someone daydreamed about "island life" a little too much instead of paying any attention in their history classes....

Go take a look at average life expectancies over the last 200 years and get back to us.

I'm not here to feed trolls, please respect the post, I'm not mistreating you, you're acting like a smarty.

Life expectancies depend a great deal on geography, and I said OUR forefathers in my previous reply, because I was talking about their life expectancies not people in some other part of the world, that has no relevance to this discussion.

Please stay on topic, and you should know if you studied so hard in school that many Americans over 100 years ago lived as long as many do today.

Enough with the life expectancies, THANKS!

I was born and raised on Oahu. The only people I have heard use the word "brah" in the last 10 years are Hulk Hogan and Dog Chapman.

Im all for the environment, if the superferry actually has a significant impact on the environment, I would be all for shutting it down. But in my head theres no way that can be true. This stuff is either out of ignorance or politics and its really just a big waste of time for no reason.

when you use the words "western people" you just make yourself sound ignorant btw, try using a countries name. oh and speaking of forefathers, who do you think invented and built all these modern conveniences? oh wait, "westerners" yeah?

I think you have seen the scene from Jaws where the ferry starts to carry over the first of the tourists way too many times.

It is up to HI to ZONE OFF parcels of lands.

You're posting on The Internets which is a "modern convenience" so your argument holds no water.

Nobody gets the REAL reason for the protests...UNIONS!!!

The ILWU doesn't want to lose jobs and dues by having regular Joe's load and unload their vehicles. If you and I can take our cars on the superferry and not spend hundreds of dollars shipping our vehicles between islands on Matson, or some other ILWU controlled inter0island shipper...the ILWU loses MONEY!!!

The Union/ILWU has stirred up all this anger against the supperferry...but what if the same furor went against ILWU run business (Matson, etc) there would be no protests...

Yes, murder is often a good step toward career advancement.

P.S. This ferry uses water jet propulsion, so there is no prop.

Well you certainly do seem like one tight wound up local then, that needs to chill.

By the way on Maui, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai they still say BRAH --> Brah ;)

Most locals on these islands still talk the pigeon english too.

Saying western has nothing to do with ignorance, it denotes a region of the world, and a way of life dictated by that part of the world.

The "Term" "Western World" isn't something I made up either. ;)

I speak it just fine, I just dont use it on the internet. Its only used in Hawaii, and if you try and speak like that to people who arent from Hawaii, usually theyll get the impression that you are unintelligent, since really all it is is broken english. Thats usually because they are ignorant or insensitive to other people cultures and customs, you know, like people who stereotype and generalize about entire hemispheres of the planet earth.

The ferry boat issues are also about curbing some of the conveniences being presented to the islands.

I mentioned this before in a different manner of wording, but hopefully some got the point.

A big valid point most will make is that Hawaii is not 3rd world, Hawaii lives just fine, so how many more things does Hawaii need people will say to make life supposedly better? They'll tell you none, things are fine the way they are.

For those of you that have been to Hawaii, when did you say on your vacation that life in Hawaii would of been better on your vacation if there was only a super freeway to travel on and get to the beaches faster, a train to ride on so you didn't have to drive, a better microwave to nuke your food better, or some other modern convenience that you could of dreamed up, that perfect gizmo, or gadget that would of just made your vacation in Hawaii better, HONESTLY I don't think to many people think, or say these things on a vacation, in fact the exact opposite, that they're happy to leave the real world behind, and just put their mind at ease, and get away from it, and relax, with no thoughts or worries.

Yes of course there are some VERY rough Hawaiians, last time I checked there were some very rough Americans living in Texas, Montana, Wyoming, and the Ozarks, that would just as soon kick your butt before they said HI to you, especially if they thought you were looking at them funny.

There are also some of the nicest Hawaiians around who will be your friend for life too, just like any nice person, to be found anywhere in the world.

Ignorance, Racism, and Hatred are not bound by geography. ;)

Topic Title: Hawaii Superferry
Topic Summary: What A Mess And Uproar It's Making

It's not making a mess.

It's all about the money.

The airlines don't want to lose any of their monopoly.

It will be interesting to see what wins out.

This boat is speeding through where whales migrate, i think that is their biggest beef. These arent just a couple few whales, the place is loaded with them.

Most of the whales stay to the west side of the chain. I moved here last winter. I live a block off the ocean and walk down to it at least twice a day. I never saw a single spout. Go to the west/south side and there are whales everywhere. Everywhere you look you see spouts and breaches.

The ferry runs along the eastern side of the chain. Whales are a convenient excuse.

Like I said, the whole protest movement is hypocritical. The ferry is more for locals than tourists. If they are trying to block progress or more traffic or (insert excuse here) then they should be out there blocking the Young Brothers barges hauling in freight and things from people who are moving here. That is the real source of harm to what they claim to want to protect.

And the airlines have nothing to do with it Dave... Do you think they care about 200 passengers when compared to the 50,000 or so they fly in and out of the island every day? (And that's just Maui) Come on.

For the couple of weeks I was there last time, I spent every day surfing as much as possible and saw whales everyday from just offshore of ma'alea, south of Lahaina, honolua bay, in front of ho'okipa, and even off of Hana. This was in mid Dec.
I am not saying that this is their only excuse, but the fact is that these boats run through the whales migration area. I am not trying to argue with you, especially since you live there, but why do you think most of the locals are against this ferry?

The native hawaiins I know and surfed with all seemed pretty vocal about protecting their waters....

Ok... You pretty much confirmed what I said. The whales tend to gather on the west side of the chain (where you were surfing). Specifically the west and south side of Maui. The ferry runs on the opposite side of the chain. I'm on Waiehu Beach and I'm telling you, from Feb to May I did't see a single whale.

Now... Ma'alaea, Lahaina, Kihei, Makena, Kapalua... whales galore. In fact the whales prefer that protected area in the Au'au channel and the waters futher south toward Molokini Crater because the water is much shallower and *important* is about three degrees warmer than the waters off the east coast where the ferry runs. To a lesser extent you'll see them from Ho'okipa but they will still be to the west/south as they head to the Kailua-Kona coast off the Big Island. You won't look east toward California and see whales. Maybe one stray once in a while but nothing consistant and nothing close to the numbers you see in the other direction.

As for protecting the waters... we're all concerned about that, native or not. I love seeing the whales. Whether it's from a whale watch boat or just scanning the ocean while I wait to tee off. And I wouldn't support anything that interfered with that.

But the Super Ferry is just another boat rolling in and out of a harbor in a whale free location. Kahului harbor sees 3 - 4 cargo barges roll in and out every day... plus the cruise ships. The Ferry is a new boat, very efficient, very clean... and its not a tourist attraction. There's just no reason to protest this thing.

Hmmm... I don't surf.
You can see the harbor from the end of my street.
The end of my street is a huge surf spot in the winter. There's always guys down there.
In this spot you can just park right there. It's cool to go down and watch them.

There is no way I am going to park my rental car over there. I grew up on the beach and know what locals can/will do to visiting rental cars. You are right about the surf spot over there, the 2 weeks that I surfed over there last year seemed like it was all locals. I even ended up talking to a bunch of them. As long as you know how to surf and dont act like an idiot, they are pretty cool.
I parked toward the harbour along Kahului beach rd where other fisherman parked. That way no one would f with it. Tis a shame you dont surf, I will be there this winter again.

It's just a generalization, read between the lines, it just means there are problems, and rednecks anywhere you go.

Sheesh do people always have to spell everything out, or don't they just get the general idea being driven? LOL ;)
