I'm sure they would like to stop any sort of change, but at best they can slightly slow things down. Couching their objections in false environmental concerns just makes them look like liars, and discredits real environmental issues.

For the couple of weeks I was there last time, I spent every day surfing as much as possible and saw whales everyday from just offshore of ma'alea, south of Lahaina, honolua bay, in front of ho'okipa, and even off of Hana. This was in mid Dec.
I am not saying that this is their only excuse, but the fact is that these boats run through the whales migration area. I am not trying to argue with you, especially since you live there, but why do you think most of the locals are against this ferry?
The native hawaiins I know and surfed with all seemed pretty vocal about protecting their waters....

Well I personally don't know what the real issues are against the SuperFerry, I personally thought it was more about protecting a way of life, and stopping the big corporates from moving in and developing up more BIG things, hence the SUPER/BIG ferry which has people scared about this BIG thing now invading our slow little islands....
I'm all for having some progress, if it means improving the quality of life to REALLY help people, BUT in all HONESTY, having Costco, Walmart, Kmart, HomeDepot, and all the bigs stores has really done nothing to improve my life. Putting traffic signals in, making the roads wider has also done nothing to improve my life, and when I came to Hawaii over 15 years ago life here was just fine, and I didn't need any more of these supposed improvements in life.
This is what it's really all about, is it really doing anything to make the Hawaiian peoples life better, and we just have to have it to get on with life, and the answer is NO.
Over 50% of the BS built up out here over the past 10 years, the majority will also tell you it does nothing for them.
THINK about it, most everyone wanting to live an island life, just wants a simple island life, and if they don't they have 49 other states to choose from, so why make this place like everyone other rat race? Now that's nutts, and being a hypocrite, because what it's really about is people wanting to come into the islands and seize opportunities for THEIR ---> POCKETS!
And guess what, once the mess is made, and the place has gone to a hell hole, and they've made their money, you think they are sticking around in the place that once was paradise? HELL NO, they'll pack up move on, leave the poor island people with all the crap they've created, and look for another place to exploit.

A VERY similar boat sails from Rochester, NY to Toronto without incident when weather allows. Whats better for the environment ... a large boat moving peeps from Island-to-island or a number of planes spewing crap into the atmosphere to move those same peeps.
BTW ... the planes can't transport those cars.

Remember Hawaii is America, it's your place of tourism, those that will never live here, but seek to find that island get away from the rat race of your daily life need to know that Hawaii needs to be protected not only for locals, but tourists, and remember all of Hawaii is directly or indirectly effected by tourism. Kill this industry, and you kill Hawaii!

Actually this year Maui saw a decline in tourism, FACT!
Tourists who take island vacations want island vacations not cement jungle rat races.
Next time when you are dreaming of the Hawaii island get away, do you want any of the following on your vacation?
1. Road rage?
2. Traffic congestion?
3. Typical city life madness, everyone always to busy in to much a hurry to give anyone any time?

You've described many of the islands in the Caribbean. When there's more than 6 ships in St Maarten, it's considered a port of crawl. St Thomas is far worse and the attitude of the locals towards the visitors shows this.
Lots of rice (the cars with airplane wings and muddy bass sound) abound as well.

No it's not the wrong target, let one come, then they all want to come.
What I'm talking about here is big business, when they see one having at, they want in on the action too, etc. etc.
Let one build, and develop, then another wants at it, and so on...

Tourists don't arrive in Hawaii on a ferry boat, remember that, and tourists can't take rental cars on the ferry either, this is more about supposedly providing more convenience to the locals, and not many of them see it that way, or something they need.
The SuperFerry isn't about tourism.

are you hawaiian? where you born in hawaii? Im just wondering what gives you the right to be so upset about these kinds of things. exactly how does an interisland ferry turn kauai or maui into california? to be honest, your whole hawaii-is-being-ruined shpiel irritates the heck outta me.

Sorry I thought I made it clear in other replies.
To much growth development, to many BIG things choking on the SMALL island way of life.
To much modernism, moving the islands to fast.
I can't speak for all islands, but I do know Kauai is moving fast, and they're not happy, but on Maui, Maui has shown the greatest amount of growth and development of any Hawaiian island in the last 5 years, in fact the growth has been so overwhelming, certain parts have been the biggest booms in the United States for growth, and 5 years ago my town was the fastest booming town in American and it made nation wide news.
The problem is to much is happening way to fast, and to much development going on, but if this were a big city, or urban lifestyle it would seem normal to you, but when you look at the size of the islands and towns and consider they have been some of the biggest growing in America, well this is really ridiculous, and that is really what this all about, a way of life being pushed to the side, while the industrialized America moves to town.

good job at totally not answering any questions. so what do you want hawaii to be like? grass huts, hunting for pigs with spears, and showering in mountain streams? come on, tell me your life would be better without electricity, cars, or anything else native hawaiians couldnt get off the land. you wouldnt even have a life in hawaii if not for that "modernization" thing you are so against. so what is it really? you just hate people? you dont want people to enjoy hawaii? you want it all to yourself? I really do not understand.
