I know, it's retarded. Hawaii is already one of the most business-hostile states, and here we are cockblocking this thing...

Exactly... I really don't understand the problem. I don't understand the hostility toward this thing. Where I live I can see the cruise ships, cargo ships and *gasp* the Super Ferry go in and out of the harbor. The protest isn't as widespread as you'd think. A handfull of surfers kept it out of Kauai. The Sierra Club (buncha effing commies) is handling the legal side of things...

It's a great idea. It's not even a a tourist thing. The rental compaies are never going to let you take a car to another island. Besides which... it's cheaper to fly and rent a car than take this boat. This is strictly for locals who want to jump islands.

Das... I know you want to see things like they were 30 years ago. But progress is natural. If something isn't growing it's dying. Progress in inevietable. And I don't see how the Ferry adds to your woes.

Progress, and growth the way you are thinking about it is a western ideology.

Progress and growth does not need to be Walmarts, Costcos, Cellphones, and Superferrys in order to have a productive way of life.

You're confusing Capitalist growth and materialism with the idea of these needing to be the values of all people everywhere, that without all these things we can't survive, it's just not true.

Tourism is one of the BIGGEST industries in the world, and one of Hawaii's greatest, and ONLY ASSETS!

Tourists take a vacation why, for many reasons, but many of those reasons are to get away from it all, and relax, and if paradise is a rat race, then tourism in that area is going to take a dive, that is all there is to it.

The ferry boat creates many problems for the islands, and not just the environment. Traffic problems from the cars is one area that smaller islands like Kauai aren't capable of handling, even on Maui it will present problems.

Traffic congestion from the cars is one problem, drunk drivers is another, they serve alcohol on the ferry, yet they make no mention of how they are going to handle the problem of passengers drinking that have cars.

Another area of discussion, I'm not sure how they came up with, but they are saying the ferry is going to create more drug problems between the islands. I guess drug dealers will use the ferry boat as a way of smuggling.

Anyhow there are a few other issues, with plants, bugs, etc...

I'm not going to argue with you about this stuff. At the end of my street is a surf break with an upside down hawaiian flag, a gathering place bordered off from everything else, pic-nic tables with independence slogans written on them and red, yellow and green trash cans.

And yet the people who hang out down there drive up in brand new Escalades and Mazda Speed 6's. It's like you guys want all the material benefits of a modern society without the modern society. You can't have it both ways.

For that matter, why aren't you all out there on your surf boards blocking the cargo ships bringing in modern goods and personal belongings of folks moving to the island?

The whole SuperFerry protest seems very hypocritical to me.

  • 1. What comes to mind when you think about Hawaii?

Surfing

  • 2. If you took a vacation to Hawaii, what are you thinking about?
Surfing, eating, snorkeling, and visiting friends

  • 3. Why do you think most people live in Hawaii?
That is where they (and their family) are from.

  • 4. If Hawaii becomes like anywhere else what will be the point of visiting?
Surfing, but other than that good point.

I tried my best to be very respectful when I go there, I know I am a visitor and treat it as such. I have seen alot of tourists that don't, and it sucks for visitors like me.

Yup, that would solve everything!! You'd just never be able to set foot on land again.

No props on the boat. Those tards are mostly native Hawaiins, they have a right to protest this.

The only people trying to get MORE tourists there are the mainland business owners. 95% of all the locals despies the tourists. The way of life there is so much different than the mainland, its really amazing.

If this thing becomes the norm, it will greatly appeal to the island hopping tourists and make the more remote islands more easily accessible. They DONT want that. Hawaii is kinda like a national park- the whole state really... its allure is in nature, the more humans that come the worse off the land will be.

Do Hawaiin's ever take vacations to the mainland or Alaska? Do they keep the same consideration for those places as they do Hawaii? What makes their area so much more special that I shouldn't visit there?

Yeah, looking at the cityscape in the background, I can see how you might think Hawaii is small and laid back

Just another example of why it's so hard to do cool shit here in America. Some tiny group gets their panties in a wad, and then the lawyers get involved and delay the program for years, and fleece both sides in the process.

Damn I hate this country so times. Why cant all lawyers just DIAF. They should have just run over those stupid surfers.

Hawaii is kinda like its own country. Your argument is basically like saying to travel to the US mainland you must be like it....

The native hawaiians are very different than the mainlanders who live there. You should visit and interact with them. They're happy with the slow pace and relaxing atmosphere. They want to keep it like it is, not make it more touristy

As far as ferry boats go, it is about as unobtrusive you get.

LOL. Hmm I wonder what they're advertising...

So Hawaii doesn't have ferry service between its islands?

Effin coconuts eating, leafs wearing natives. So which faeries do the ferry company has to pay off this time? Can't the USCG just arrest those idiots in the water, charge them with whatever offense they've violated if someone were to form a human blockade on the freeway?

It's not making a mess.

It's all about the money.

The airlines don't want to lose any of their monopoly.

It will be interesting to see what wins out.

This boat is speeding through where whales migrate, i think that is their biggest beef. These arent just a couple few whales, the place is loaded with them.

Most of the whales stay to the west side of the chain. I moved here last winter. I live a block off the ocean and walk down to it at least twice a day. I never saw a single spout. Go to the west/south side and there are whales everywhere. Everywhere you look you see spouts and breaches.

The ferry runs along the eastern side of the chain. Whales are a convenient excuse.

Like I said, the whole protest movement is hypocritical. The ferry is more for locals than tourists. If they are trying to block progress or more traffic or (insert excuse here) then they should be out there blocking the Young Brothers barges hauling in freight and things from people who are moving here. That is the real source of harm to what they claim to want to protect.

And the airlines have nothing to do with it Dave... Do you think they care about 200 passengers when compared to the 50,000 or so they fly in and out of the island every day? (And that's just Maui) Come on.
