Newegg and Amazon should try a partial merger: Keep the Newegg business as its own entity, focused on computer components, but make use of Amazon's logistics network - and piggy-back into the Prime shipping. 🙂

It's a shame that our species doesn't do well with monopolistic organizations though. It would potentially be much more efficient to have one unified organization handle this kind of product distribution. But, evolution's steered us toward conserving energy whenever possible, in any way possible. So, it doesn't work out so well, for various reasons. Oh well.

Who says the computer people are now paying attention to the automotive/cooking stuff? It's likely an all new/different set of product managers.

Their core business has been to sell products. They are not moving away from it at all. They are only diversifying, as any good business should.

yeah newegg has gone to shit. they used to be the only place i would check before i ordered. now? i check them but order off amazon first. its cheaper with better costumer support.

If you ignore all their third-party distributors it's the same newegg as it's always been...not the very cheapest price but super fast shipping & good customer service.

Newegg was the cheapest of places when I built my computer in 2002.
I bought my DVD-ROM drive, CDRW drive, HDD, CPU, and RAM all from there. At least 90% of the computer parts were sourced from Newegg.

I built a new computer in 2009 and it was not the same.
Monitor: IPS screen from Dell.com business with coupon. Newegg was loaded with TN panels and there were no cheap IPS panels besides the $500 ones and the $212 sale price on the one I bought from dell.
CPU: Microcenter
Motherboard: Newegg (Microcenter was my 1st option but they didn't have the motherboard I wanted in stock.)
RAM: Newegg
GPU: Buy.com
HDD : Amazon(I learnt about Newegg's HDD packing scheme with peanuts during this phase and chose to order from them, rather than Newegg.)
PSU: ZipZoomFly
Case: SVC(or something like that, I don't remember the name)
Case fans: SideWinder computers(I think???)
Optical drives were harvested from previous 2002 build.

Also, they shipped my memory through DHL which arrived in arrived about 7-10 days leter. My entire system was ready to go on day one and evrything arrived on time from the different places I ordered.
I just never anticipated that DHL would take 7-10 days to ship a RAM stick from New Jersey...Why go through DHL to deliver to USPS who will then deliver home at all when you can just send the item through New Jersey with the USPS alone and be done with? Cut down the middle DHL man.

I usually just buy something from them if the following conditions are met: If it is less than $30 and it is on sale; typically dvd burner, dvd media, flash drive, etc.. If it is something more expensive I usually go to Directron or Amazon.

Now that Amazon charges me tax I may look to Newegg as option #1 for any $50+ items I want to buy. They're the only ones who ever challenged Amazon's shipping speed and many times were actually faster (though this was 1-2 years ago) and that's without the use of a Prime account. Is it weird they're diversifying their item stock? Sure, but Amazon use to only sell books, is anyone complaining about that? I mean big deal, so they sell more stuff now, it's really a silly issue to argue. They still have a great item search engine and informative reviews for tech items so it's not like they shifted focus away from their bread and butter.

We have Canada Computers here and a shit ton of stores, so I've never had the urge to buy computer parts online. NCIX used to be based only in Vancouver and I thought about getting stuff from them a few times, but never did. Now they have a warehouse in Ontario. Newegg.ca came too late for me to care. I do remember using the US site for reviews way back when though.

Most of my orders still ship within 24 hours and if I order parts by early Monday afternoon I typically have them at my door by Friday afternoon, just as it has been for years. Often times I'll get some of the stuff faster than I used to because of their numerous warehouses around the country now instead of everything having to come from Cali.

Their "green" paper packaging they started using does suck a little, but anyone saying Amazon's packing is any better has to be on crack. I like amazon a lot for various things, and I've not had anything really damaged from either location, but amazon's packing has always sucked and I've never ordered anything overly fragile (HDDs for example) because of it. At least Newegg always wraps the HDDs in a zillion layers of bubble wrap 😛

I have no idea why people care. I made some purchases on NewEgg today, and I couldn't care less if they also sell alternators in bulk.

Also, if you want shit faster from NewEgg, you can get ShopRunner. It's pretty much the same price as Amazon Prime, and it can be used on other sites. I kind of like it because it ensures my stuff doesn't get shipped via EggSaver (i.e. UPS Mail Innovations D🙂.

I preordered NBA 2K13 from them, but only because they had $12 off.

I find that I tend to not pre-order games because NewEgg doesn't detail whether they'll try to get it to you by release day, and they don't ever seem to have pre-order bonuses. The 10% or $10-12 off is a pretty good bonus in itself, but when it comes to a game like Borderlands 2, you probably want the pre-order bonus. 😛

I use their search to find the products and part numbers I want, then I usually order from Amazon.

I'll usually at least check Amazon, but Amazon isn't always cheaper. Also, NewEgg almost always ships on the same day (if you order it before ~11AM PST) where Amazon is sketchy about that. NewEgg and Amazon both have warehouses in Tennessee, which means that I typically get my products the next day. One nice thing is that NewEgg will also tell you if it's shipping from close by. On my latest order, 2/3 items were listed as "UPS 3-Day Delivery (Estimated 1 Day Delivery)" or something like that. That means they're shipping from Tennessee. Amazon doesn't do that, and if I really want it quickly, I have to go for one-day shipping or take my chances.

I definitely agree with you and everyone else on the fact that NewEgg has a far superior search engine for components.

The constant need to squeeze more profit out of everything seems to kill businesses all the time. I know Newegg doesn't make this kind of jack but really, when is making $5b a year not enough? That's right, when people think your company sucks and is stagnant because it only makes $5b a year every year. That's not good enough, you need to sell auto parts now so you can then make $5.1b a year.

I think it's just the corporate mindset. Even if a business is doing very well, it's not doing enough if they're not seeing increasing profits each fiscal year. NewEgg probably could have left everything alone and been fine, but the suits don't like that sort of behavior. 😛

Whats driving newegg towards a marketplace like environment is the easy money it brings in as commission. Amazon charges upto 16% as commission depending on the type of item. That is free money just to let some seller use their website as a store front.
The revenue stream is endless as it opens up its door. I don't blame newegg for trying this approach. Who doesn't have a similar option- best buy, walmart, buy.com, sears to name a few.

it sucks now because the price's are not longer that great, did away with cheap shipping, costumer service now sucks ass.

seems to take longer to get the product even out the door. sure you can pay extra for them to do it faster..

Things almost always ship in one day for me with or without ShopRunner. However, you have to order it early!! Amazon will sometimes ship as late as 5PM central for me, but NewEgg will almost never ship that late. I noticed that once you hit about 12PM PST is when the ship date almost always moved to the next day.

A lot of shipping is still free too. The only problem is that unless you get enough items, they ship it via EggSaver... blech.

Shipping (usually) seems reasonable to me. I've ordered parts for a complete computer system for someone recently and the combined shipping was under 15 bucks for the 3 boxes. Doesn't seem bad to me at all.

Sometimes individual parts shipping can nail you however.

All Newegg does is put the HDD in an anti-static bag in a box stuffed with peanuts.

Of all the hard drives I've ordered from Newegg (a few dozen by now) I've never had one come shipped that way. Every one has been wrapped in a huge bundle of bubble wrap. Same with OEM optical drives.
