You also have to take into account that GTA V probably has a far more complex physics engine behind it.
What physics engine? GTA V's gameplay feels like a pure arcade game, does it not? There is literally 0 realistic physics effects from what I've noticed. You can go 100mph on a bike and if you hit a car on the side, nothing happens. You can do 1000 foot motorcycle jumps. You can throw a granade 2 meters away from you and then when a car blows up, it hits you in the face and you don't die. The vehicle physics mechanics are non-existent when it comes to depicting realism. GTA V goes 100% after arcade gamer.

The Witcher 3 is for sure big and impressive but so is GTA 5. I really don't know why RS keeps going on and on trying to force his opinion down everybody's throat with these long and time consuming posts.
See, now people are again mixing up gameplay with graphics/realism. I am not comparing gameplay AT ALL. I am not debating which game is more fun. From a realism and grahpics point of view, GTA V looks worse and thus this topic relates to graphical performance. If GTA V had mind-blowing graphics or amazing physics engine, it would make sense why it's so demanding on GPUs, but it has neither of those things. The Witcher 3 might technically be smaller i size than GTA V (but that's debatable), but in every single scene it looks more realistic, more detailed.
Then V has to run everything in the background - dozens of AI/pathway NPCs, physics, decals, all the graphical stuff, weather, grass, day/night etc. Will the Witcher III have a freeway with 50 cars casting 50 different shadows? Streets filled with a dozen plus NPCs?
That's been my problem with these types of games. I'd rather see 10 realistic looking people on the street than 50-100 ugly looking figures with blurry textures. I'd rather have 4-5 amazing looking cars Project CARS style than 50 ugly abominations in GTA V that look like they came out from Gran Turismo 3 or Xbox 360's 2005 Project Gotham Racing. Again, I don't want to discuss gameplay of GTA V, but rather its graphical and technical merits. GTA V takes the approach of MORE is better, but like AC Unity, by using MORE NPCs and cars and objects, the game ends up looking worse and then I am scratching my head why it looks like this but runs so poorly given what I am seeing on the screen?

Dying Light has a very aggressive LOD and poor lighting & shadow system. GTA V is much more impressive.
The poor performance in GTA V is associated with grass settings on max and in wilderness scenes.
I am curious to see where outside HardOCP tested the game because in this video a 780 with an i7 4790K has good FPS in grass heavy scenes with Grass on Ultra.

I think he takes my comments on GTA V's graphics and physics as an attack on the gameplay, which it isn't. I realize that GTA V wouldn't be that fun if they made it a very realistic game. But that kinda goes back to my point that without a realistic physics engine and so many things at once on the screen, it often ends up looking pretty average. That's why sometimes I feel that there is a disconnect about the GPU demands of games like Watch Dogs and GTA V and their graphics.
In some areas the game does look very nice, amazing in fact for an open world game!




But then.....at other times it looks like a totally different game, like you are playing some 2012 Sims title. That's what gives me the 50-50 feeling that GTA V is somewhat unoptimized.

Characters missing depth and the shadow model seems like it went on vacation for some of the NPCs.

Horrible textures and character detail from last gen.

Because of this inconsistency between great graphics and mediocre graphics, that's why I have such mixed feelings about GTA V murdering GPUs like the 780 and R9 290. This is where mods will come in and I think will improve GTA V 10X.
