Definately TMNT 1. This game was so cool but it pissed me off more than anything... and now that I look back on it, wow this game sucks! LOL.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest comes in 2nd.

OH, I forgot about Ghosts and Goblins, that game was impossible. Everything was always going fine, then youd get hit once, your armor breaks and suddenly your weapon turned to crap.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts, the SNES sequel was equally impossible, but I think I eventually beat that one after like a billion tries.

I was the only one amongst my friends to beat TMNT 1, ironically Shredder was the easiest boss.

bionic commando was cake, i beat that game so many times.
I could get up to one mission where it required you to swing in the air a couple times, without a ground, so if you had any mis-timing you're dead. Never got passed that level.

I'd throw in a vote for Caveman Games. I don't know of anyone anywhere who could play this game without a turbo controller. The button mashing requirements were just so insane that you couldn't do anything.

And I agree with all above posts too. Strange contrast, nowadays it's very rare to find a game that cannot be beaten by a majority of gamers.

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox is damn near impossible.

Ninja Gaiden for Xbox was pretty ridiculous, and had a freakishly steep learning curve, however once you got the hang of it it wasnt too bad. But Ninja Gaiden for the original NES was harder.

Anyone else think the final boss of Metroid Prime 2 was pretty nuts?, although definitely beatable.

I thought it was great until I got to the first boss. :Q

bionic commando was challenging, but such a great game!
it had a HUGE piss-off factor, there was one level that you could go to where if you didn't have the 3-way cannon you'd be stuck there and have to reset the game. hated that

hardest for me was probably battletoads

final fantasy was challenging after the first 6 hours or so.
i remember being stuck on the Ice Caves for a long assed time.

i never had any problems with Top Gun

IIRC, there was actually a key combo that would exit the level.

OH yeah, FF1, I played that game for days, and I never managed to beat the final dungeon. When they added saving inside of dungeons into FF2 I was so happy. (Im speaking US versions here, so I think FF1=FF1 and FF2=FF4)

Fester's quest. Stupid game had no way to save. Once you died, it was back to the beginning.

Difficult? Or frsutrating? There are games that are just stupidly glitched and some with crappy controls that makes the game hard and frustrating. Then there are games that are just plain difficult.

I'd have to say freakin Top Gun for sheer frustration (maybe even Seicross too). For difficulty, I'd have to go with most of the early Capcom games (Section Z comes to mind, even though I beat it).

No kiddin'! This was probably one of the games that made me learn how to swear as a kid.

Yeah it was. It actually may be harder than any of the other games listed here...it just wasn't as well known so it's not going to get the votes.

I've beaten Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2.

Ninja Gaiden 2 was significantly easier than the first one (although still challenging). I never played the third one, which was supposedly the most difficult because you had a limited number of continues.

I'll also agree with TMNT 1, Castlevania (the first one) and Blaster Master.

I beat almost of all NES games I played, including Tyson's Puchout, TMNT 1 and Ninja Gaiden series, but I could not beat Battletoads, although I got quite far.

EDIT: Like someone mentioned, Athena was another one I could not beat. It was buggy was hell, and I would end up at a dead end (I tried going underground but that didn't help).

I hear ya...the original Metal Gear was tres difficult. All of those stupid mazes and the desert and the card keys and the bomb blast suit, and getting pissed off every time you heard the siren go off when you were detected, and "UH OH...The truck have started to move"...haha. I loved that game.
