I definitely think that the original metal gear was hard as balls

Yeah it was. It actually may be harder than any of the other games listed here...it just wasn't as well known so it's not going to get the votes.

I hear ya...the original Metal Gear was tres difficult. All of those stupid mazes and the desert and the card keys and the bomb blast suit, and getting pissed off every time you heard the siren go off when you were detected, and "UH OH...The truck have started to move"...haha. I loved that game.

aye. i loved that game and was very excited when MGS came out on PSX. on NES, i got stick where they had the guy in the garbage can-looking thing and then there's this deep river indoors pointing upwards. i managed to get pass the river but only one of my card keys worked and it led to some stupid item.

bayou billy. it was almost impossible even with the infinite lives game genie code (lives weren't infinite, just the largest number the memory could hold).

I'd have to say freakin Top Gun for sheer frustration (maybe even Seicross too). For difficulty, I'd have to go with most of the early Capcom games (Section Z comes to mind, even though I beat it).

Can you even beat Seicross? I played that game with Game Genie for like 5 hours and it looked like the levels just kept going up.. How many are there?

I vote for Battletoads.. Hard as hell.

Yes, I never did see the end of any of those games mentioned. One of these days, I'll go back and take care of some unfinished business...

How are Mega Man II and III not represented here?
The first Castlevania was ridiculously hard
Contra without the Konami code (how many can say they actually beat this without it?)

Because mega man II and III were ridiculously easy? I could beat them when I was 8, without using any of the special weapons.

Mega Man I was the hard one. That one took me forever to beat.

i dunno why, but nothing could infuriate me like a nintendo game back in the day. i actually stopped playing consoles all together because of it.

PC games have not effected me like that.

I don't recall ever successfully landing when I was a kid. :(

I tried it on an emulator recently and did it though.

I think I will make that one of my life goals

Definitely TMNT. Goonies 2 a close second, Kid Icarus a close 3rd.

Goonies 2 just took a long time but I didn't find it particularly hard.

I got to the stage where you fought with two bouncers, one blue and one red, they were huge and were like robot uniforms. hard as freak even with the whip, which was quite rare to have gotten that far with the weapon and not dying.

alright, after those two impoosible freaks, I fought with another boss for crying out loud, and he had a freakin' gun I think. he was rigged to the point where he go "sure" shots on you.

I was like, how the hell do you keep fighting bosses in this mansion, and still have enough lives!?

If I had the game genie for this, I'd probably beat it. But even still, I don't know if I'd still have the patience to drive through the roads without dying so much. It was pretty slick the way the game was programmed though, I gotta admit.

p.s. it was sweet how you got to test out the sound FX in the options mode, hilarious turning up the volume and getting your parents mad at ridiculous Nes songs and sound FX's.

the first contra i could do without the code. go spread gun!

mike tysons punchout, i didn't beat until 2 years ago. *finally* but definitely hard as a child.

castlevania = could never beat, i didn't even get to the last guy, i think i got to the 2nd to last boss. btw, simons quest is way easier than castlevania.

kid icarus was way fun, but not that bad to beat, although sometimes i would get lost in those mazes trying to find the bosses.

oh man, ninja gaiden, i could get really far, but i can't remember which boss it was, but i could never get past them.

double dragon = i couldn't beat the last guy or near the last guy (it was a guy with a machine gun)

tmnt = yep, super hard, i think i got to that water bomb level and gave up

mega man = couldn't even pass the regular bosses levels

Crap is that real?

I'm guessing it's tool-assisted - the movements are scripted. Tyson doesn't hit him once, and he enters the code at the begging way to quickly and accurately.

No it's not. I can do the same thing. If I knew it was that spectacular, I would have uploaded a video too. ;) The first 1:30min Tyson will knock you down with one blow. But you can avoid them and get two shots in between, but that's it. Get greedy and go for three shots and you're going down. After the 1:30 mark, Tyson can hit you but it will not knock you down in one shot. I'd say Tyson is easier than Super Macho Man once you get used to playing him. You just gotta have leet reflexes. ;)

That was a very fustrating game.

I have a long list but my vote would go to Splunker. I was pretty close to the end on several tries but never did finish it.
