A little background...
Handbrake is a ubiquitous encoding application and happens to be one that makes good use of multicore/thread CPU's when encoding x265. x265 is a widely used and efficient compression scheme that requires significant compute to encode. While hardware encoders are faster, at the same bitrates, CPU (software) encode produces better video quality. Of course this assumes the use of lower bitrates as quality for both hardware and software encodes will be indistinguishable at higher bitrates. But the point of the video encode is to get good quality at low bitrates so we are therefore testing software encode.

fps/GHz/core is a representation of how efficient a given CPU core is at encoding the test file using the x265 format. The number is arrived at by multiplying the number of physical cores by the average frequency they are running at and then dividing by the fps from the Handbrake test. It tells us for a given core how many fps can this core encode the test if it was running at 1GHz. We could consider this an "IPC" of sorts for this test but strictly speaking this would be closer to the word "throughput." And as you know many around here are indeed strict with terminology so I will avoid the word IPC at it denotes Instructions Per Cycle and that is not actually what we are measuring.

Some people will go "all out" and try and run their system as close to the limit as possible and others (like me) just run at stock. All of the data is valuable and informative as long as it is collected from each person in the same manner and there for comparable.

I went through all of the results and created a new table. In respecting everyone's time who participated in the old data I am keeping that data on the 2nd page of this post.

1. Use the following version of Handbrake with the built-in h.265 mkv 2160p60 preset
HandBrake-1.3.3-x86_64-Win_GUI.exe
Don't forget to turn on logging in Handbrake so you can retrieve your time. Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Logging
Once this current version is replaced you'll be able to access this version from the following link.

2. Report your encoding time, average CPU frequency, and Package Power. If you have a hybrid CPU you can turn off the E's in the BIOS. For E testing turn off all P's except one in the BIOS, clock it down to 800MHz, and then shut it down with Process Lasso. Or just report your score with 1 P at 800MHz and let me know you did that so I can subtract out that P core's (minor) contribution to the encode.

Here's how to report your average clock and package power so we are all doing it the same way.
Handbrake does some housekeeping right after you start encode and when the progress bar gets to 100%.
This could result in lower than actual average clock.
After you start the encode, wait a few seconds until you see the green Handbrake bar appear, then reset the HWinfo counter.
At the end don't wait to grab the screen shot at 100%, just do it sometime after about 95%.

What memory are you running ? I have 7200 running 1:1 but I can't run this now. cl 34 I think.

What I have is EXP only, but it was on the preselect, and aftermarket tests say 1:1, so I am happy. Taichi motherboard.

Is this benchmark bandwidth limited ?

That’s about 15% higher than your fps in the table on page one. Did you have a higher score than that with the 7950x?

Was just hoping for more*, but since limited by the same 2200mhz FCLK bandwidth limitation i guess 12% is okai
22.62/20.21 = ~12%

* in other render benchmarks Zen5 is a beast compared to Zen4

I’m honestly surprised the 9950X efficiency/clock speed is pretty much the same as the 7950X. Would’ve thought there’d be some advance there.

Handbrake is an encoder benchmark, not render benchmark, but ~12% is consistent with the average IPC uplift. Different encoder formats may show different results.

If that’s the case I’ll test M4’s h.265 encoder when the Mac’s come out, it’s encoder is nearly 2x faster than M3.

Handbrake is an encoder benchmark, not render benchmark, but ~12% is consistent with the average IPC uplift. Different encoder formats may show different results.
What needs to be edited regarding his 7950x data? I'll fix it.

This is a newer 7950X entry with 2:1 memory @ 8000MT/s compared to the older 1:1 run you have in the table
its a much closer apple to apple comparison vs the 9950X

AVX512 is disabled by default in x265 encoding. You need to add this in Video tab ---> Advanced options:

In HandBrake 1.3.3 it doesnt improve x265 encoding speed (9950X)

But I have tried with the latest version, 1.8.2, and if AVX512 is enabled, it improves encoding speed by about 10%

What could cause Handbrake frames to drop to 1/4 of what it was getting previously? I have a Ryzen 5600g, and was encoding an old 1970's show. I decided to try out
AMD VCE, because I heard it was fast, using the gpu instead of the cpu. I was getting greatly increased frames per second - about 1,200 frames per second. Then I updated the AMD
Adrenaline drivers, which I had noticed were back on March 2024 drivers for my Windows 11. Today, I went to encode a different 1970's TV show, using the exact same preset, and I'm getting only about 350 frames per second. At first, I thought this was probably due to the newer graphics driver 'breaking' something, but then I went back and tried compressing the first show again - and was again getting 1,200 frames per second.

So the problem isn't the driver. Can two different TV shows from the same era, and the same format, really give such different compressing results?

Are you sure the compression settings are exactly the same?
More importantly are you sure the source video is the same? Perhaps one is interlaced and the other is not. Or the frame rates are slightly different, one 29.97 and the other 30. A format change like that will make Handbrake slow down quite a bit.

Wow, I hadn't considered that small changes like that could have such an impact. I'll look at the details, and see if there were differences in the source material.

I wonder if there would be more of a difference using the gpu portion of the processor, or the cpu portion?

The interlacing or changing frame rates can be very compute intensive. Taking two interlaced frames and combining them and removing artifacts and or changing the frame rate by interpolating frames requires a lot of processing.

Results updated and I revised the reporting data.

If anyone want to report their average frequency during the encode we can see the core "throughput" efficiency expressed as the GHz the core needs to render at 1fps.

If you have a hybrid CPU and want to try and isolate P and/or E cores, run the test with P's only, for example, and report the encoding time and average P core frequency.

Since the E's can't be totally shut off you can leave one on at 800MHz, it won't be contributing much to the encode and if I have the P core "throughput" number I can subtract out its minor contribution to the encode.
