GUYS THE BTX COOLER RUMORS ARE TRUE!!!

Max. Air Flow: 40.3 to 126CFM
Noise: 23.5 to 56 dB

Nice specs, but when you add a smokin prescott that fan will be spinning full blast at 56 whirring decibels.

Unfortunately they will have to stap it directly to the Mobo tray.

i wonder what the stock cooler will look like that comes with new btx presscotts. im also wondering why intel even released the prescott core, they should have refined it until the temps were more like the amd64 processors. less heat/power, not more.

You're tuning irregular shapes and cirles into squares and rectangles. For example for the CNPS7000 It's more like, (3.14)54.5^2 x integral of height , since I don't have the line fuction best guess is 30

CNPS7000 = 280,000 mm^3

vs.

CL-P0030 = 593,000 mm^3

Over double the size, the eye can see it clearly. Which is why everyone says WOW!!!

You can extrapolate with "best guesses" all you want... That doesn't change the fact that this cooler isn't big compared to other very popular coolers.

Imho, the shock is simply because of changing technology. Not too much different than ISA to PCI to AGP to PCIe... AT to ATX... etc.

Everytime there's a significant change, people cry foul. Even though the constant change and innovation is a key factor in what keeps us geeks ethused and excited.

For some reason, you seem to think I'm implying that the HSF is large. Last time I checked, a brick wasn't a very big object in the grand scheme of things. I didn't know that issuing a blunt statement such as "looks like a brick" was considered overreacting. Go attack someone else.
 
BTX and ATX are form factors. Most newer pcs use and have been using for the past 10+ years the ATX form factor. The BTX is a new form factor Intel has cooked up to help their CPU run a little cooler. BTX moves the CPU into more direct air flow while putting the north bridge away from it. It most likely won't be adopted, if it will ATX still has two years left at least.
 
Ah so it's an intel thing? I guess i dont have to worry about that since im an athlon man haha. Does that mean this crazy cooler won't fit on a amd?

everyone knows the prescott runs hot... any reason why people have to keep beating this point into everyone over and over again???

if amd released a processor that ran HOTTER than a prescott, would we see everyone on this forum crying... "OMG AMD PROCESSORS RUN SO HOT!!" of course not... i'm sure there'd be tons of people that'd back up amd saying stuff like... "well it's necessary blah blah blah"

put yourself into wingznuts shoes... i don't blame him at all for standing up for intel (yes he works there) but still...

my last 4 or so systems ahve been AMD but i'm realy getting tired of reading all these "prescott's run hot" threads... everyone knows that... but have you guys seen what sort of damage a 5 ghz prescott can do? go check out xtremesystems.org... at least those guys don't constantly cry and whine about prescott's running so hot...

can't we discuss something like the dual core amd chips that are just around the corner? or even the dual gpu video cards that are coming out soon?

Then BTX risks being a very shortlived format factor, when Intel decides integrated memory controller is better idea, or busclocks increase.

Heatsink looks fine to me. Having spent time with throttling P4s, that's the kind of thing I'd want for a 640-660, if I ever buy such a thing. I'm partial to big heatsinks. What's the fuzz?
 
They look neat to me. I can't wait to try one out. That looks similar to the one that Intel will use in the retail box.

WOW... I take it you have a very shot term memory. When AMD's fist .13 Athlon chips came out they were hot as heck. People were putting them down worse then prescott. So you might want to re-think thet idea.


And Wingznut, you are comparing aftermarket overclocing heatsinks to what will be Intels OEM heatsink. I am running dual Xeons right now and the heatsink that was recomened is about twice as big as the one linked here.
Intel has funked up, and intel peopel are still playing the "no we have not" game.

I see nothing wrong with that heatsink... I mean, just turn off the fan, wait about 30 seconds, and then you can toss a slice of bread on it, make some toast, then put on your ear plugs, then turn the fan back on!
