7 is noticeably faster, and much more consistent.

I've seen Vista run great on average machines (Athlon 64 3200+, 2GB of Ram, 250GB 7200rpm Sata, integrated video), and then inexplicably run like total smashed assholes on systems it should fly on (last example : clean install on an HP Notebook w/2.26ghz C2D, Nvidia 9600M 512MB Dedicated GPU, 500GB 7200RPM 2.5", 4GB Dual-Channel PC6400/DDR2-800, etc).

Of the couple dozen systems I've run 7 on, from lowly Atom-based netbooks with 1GB all the way to core i7 920, it consistently performs. Of the ~150+ systems I've seen Vista on, sometimes it runs superb, sometimes it just runs like shit. Some of it is the OEM crapware, but frequently there is no rational explanation.

Also, Windows 7's shell is like 1/4 the size of Vista. They really trimmed it down.

But W7 is Vista SP2 anways, so...

No, it's not, go do some research. Vista SP2 on a 1GB netbook is slow as molasses. Win7 RTM on the same 1GB netbook is faster than XP (!!!).

It's similarly quicker on pretty much any hardware.

Dude, don't bother arguing with Chris. This user is a total Apple sycophant and has proven to be completely irrational and unreasonable. Arguing with this user is like pushing shit uphill.

Yea he either gets paid from Apple or they give him stuff for free so either way he's an Apple fanboi and none of his opinions matter.

I have only encountered Vista at work (my home PC is a 4 year old laptop, I have no reason to change OS's). Work requires some interesting things that Vista is not so keen on... kerberos authentication and we must use symantec endpoint. Kerberos is okay for the desktop environment, not so much for the laptops as cached credentials changed (or so I am told). Symantec Endpoint... garbage, but functional in XP, not so much in Vista.

I am past the point in my life where change for changed sake is a good thing. I like knowing where my start button is, I like knowing where my control panel is. As long as I can make my menu/desktop/experience look like 2k, I will be happy with win7/vista/win8/whatever. If they pull an OSX on me (last real Mac OS I knew was 7), then Microsoft probably lost me as a customer for their new products.

OEMs aren't shipping with Win7 yet. In a few weeks you will see Win7 installs with all the OEM crapware.

That said, it still runs circles around Vista.

In my previous rant, I complained about the 5 minute boot up. Well, no improvement over XP there.

"Are you sure you meant to do that" dialogs

Ironically, this caching is automatically turned off in Win7 by default if you are using an SSD that would load them quicker. The UAC options to get rid of the dialogs are MUCH better in Win7.

Windows 7 is bad as far as all the changes (don't totally change the UI when the previous one works fine!) but at least it's faster then Vista, so I would possibly consider it. Not sure how compatibility is though, I have not played with it that much.

When I first tried Win7 I thought they were on crack with the new taskbar, and not having quicklaunch addable without registry editing. Then when I started getting used to the new taskbar and saw the new options on it after a few days, I realized this is actually a huge improvement.

vista is actually pretty damn decent.

I'm running Vista Ultimate and it runs fine on my PC
Specs:
Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.4GHz
4 GB RAM
250 GB HDD (110 GB free)
nVidia GeForce 9400 GT 1024Mb PCIe 2.0

It's garbage. Today, I spent an hour installing a fucking printer. I had some problems that required rebooting and reboots took like 5 minutes! And then I couldn't share it over a network. Vista is garbage.

Printer drivers are notoriously shitty.

That being said, I use Vista Ultimate 64 on my gaming rig and it runs really, really well. I did have Windows 7 RC on it before Vista and 7, even in RC form was snappier and more user friendly as far as the interface. That being said, they are very similar OS's, Vista just has developed a bad name among those more interested in pop culture computing...

Windows 7 feels pretty damn similar to Vista. The taskbar is better, the menus (internet options, that sort of stuff) are organized a bit better, but it feels pretty similar. Some of my games don't work as well (GTA4 runs like shit now), but I'm sure that's a driver problem.

It's OK but you cannot add *anything* to it like the quick launch. Adding the QL toolbar is as easy as right clicking the task bar, selecting toolbars, new toolbar and pasting the following in the location space: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Then you can have both or if you prefer to have just the quicklaunch like earlier versions of Windows unpin the other icons and customize this toolbar to your liking.

Easy as pie. :)

I installed Win 7 Ultimate today (thanks microsoft launch event!) .. took about 90 minutes from start to finish.

I like the look of the new taskbar. Love the mouseover functionality
i lol'd at the upgraded MS Paint (they gave it an Outlook 2007 dock)

So far.. performance seems to be slightly better than Win Vista Ultimate.

haven't had any driver problems... printer and monitor and graphics card work fine
Warcraft runs smoother actually, better fps.

Sweet.

 Quick Launch. It's my primary icon location.

You give people too much credit.

My printer installation with Vista: Plug in the USB cable, wait a couple seconds, done.

Heh, that's if it's one of the lucky printers that has built-in driver support.

I had to load drivers for an OfficeJet L7480, the disc's drivers didn't work for Vista 64 Business, so I had to download a 230MB driver to satisfy the client on his agonizing T1 connection.

That's not Vista's fault whatsoever though, that's just printer drivers becoming obscenely bloated.

What is up with these drivers lately? 60MB for a MOUSE driver? :disgust:

The HP all in ones are the worst. They take over your system like Quicktime on steroids.

Yeah HP drivers have always sucked. If you think 60 MB for a mouse driver is big you should see how big Nvidia drivers are getting. Before we know it they will be 1 GB.

Yep, I'm the same. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I run XP for WEEKS without it crashing so why should I give a dam about upgrading? I'm slightly tempted to upgrade to 64 bit so maybe Win 7 after it has good driver gaming support.

Out of the box 7 is a lot better. I had to tweak 20, or so things on Vista to get it working 'properly' and none obstructive. When I installed windows 7 pro, I just had to disable UAC and that was it.

Vista is the stepchild, like ME was.

Sure, it will run fine for those users.

If you're a tech assisting or even remoting in to 100's of PCs per day fixing all sorts of issues, you quickly realize how POS vista is. One of my pet peves with Vista when it comes to remote support is the lack of telnet client. WTF? I know I can install it, but I'm not going to start asking users to put in their CD (99% of the time they wont have it) so I can install something that should already be installed in first place. It's like win98's winipcfg tool. Why did they remove it? It was a useful tool for remote troubleshooting. Easier then trying to get the user to go to run, type cmd and then type ipconfig. Tons of other issues like this which are only relevant when supporting the OS.

IMO the best OS to support would be Linux. Would be awesome to be able to just SSH in and fix problems without even affecting the user.

Vista is nothing like ME. However the comparison of Vista=2000, 7=XP is a valid comparison IMO. 2000 and Vista took more work, but could offer possibly better experiences. 7 and XP made it very easy, so customer support was behind those operating systems a lot more. However neither 2000 nor Vista were bad OSes.
