I still don't understand all of the hate Vista gets. Windows7 is the exact same thing with a new taskbar and all of a sudden its teh best OS evar!1!!! Sure, it's better, but its not that much better

7 is noticeably faster, and much more consistent.

I've seen Vista run great on average machines (Athlon 64 3200+, 2GB of Ram, 250GB 7200rpm Sata, integrated video), and then inexplicably run like total smashed assholes on systems it should fly on (last example : clean install on an HP Notebook w/2.26ghz C2D, Nvidia 9600M 512MB Dedicated GPU, 500GB 7200RPM 2.5", 4GB Dual-Channel PC6400/DDR2-800, etc).

Of the couple dozen systems I've run 7 on, from lowly Atom-based netbooks with 1GB all the way to core i7 920, it consistently performs. Of the ~150+ systems I've seen Vista on, sometimes it runs superb, sometimes it just runs like shit. Some of it is the OEM crapware, but frequently there is no rational explanation.

Sound more like vendors don't have the driver software ready for vista as opposed to the OS being a problem itself. I've used vista on machines and thought it ran fairly nicely. personally though i do prefer the feel of 7.

When XP came out it was one of Microsoft's best solutions. It finally combined the mainstream of Windows 98 with the stability of the NT platform. A properly cared for XP system was stable and fast.

Vista came along and it wasn't bad but it wasn't optimized so it ran slow out of the box, and for people who had less than 2 gigs of ram performance suffered. Even with 2 or more gigs Vista was a lot slower.
You can like or hate Vista but the results speak for themselves. People didn't see any improvements and Microsoft had to shove it down people's throats. I remember hearing that SP3 was released for XP because they could not get people to buy Vista for anything. I tend to think of Vista as the windows ME of the NT platform but at least more stable. :p

This is why when Microsoft went to make Windows 7 they took people's complaints to heart and came out with an OS that so far appears to be a cross between XP and Vista. Out of the box Windows 7 is optimized and runs like a champ. Microsoft is no angel but at least this time around they put out a nice operating system. I've been running Windows 7 for a few weeks now and I have to say it's a LOT better. Granted a reinstall always will speed things up but this is not just because of the reinstall, I see the performance differences.

I honestly feel Microsoft has a big hit on their hands with Windows 7. Time will tell but I suspect 7 is going to be a hot seller.

When I first tried Win7 I thought they were on crack with the new taskbar, and not having quicklaunch addable without registry editing. Then when I started getting used to the new taskbar and saw the new options on it after a few days, I realized this is actually a huge improvement.

It's OK but you cannot add *anything* to it like the quick launch.

Actually, you can. Just drag whatever files or shortcuts you want onto an empty space on the task bar and it will pin it there. You can also drag all the icons on the taskbar & system tray around.

I had to load drivers for an OfficeJet L7480, the disc's drivers didn't work for Vista 64 Business, so I had to download a 230MB driver to satisfy the client on his agonizing T1 connection.

That's not Vista's fault whatsoever though, that's just printer drivers becoming obscenely bloated.

What is up with these drivers lately? 60MB for a MOUSE driver? :disgust:

The HP all in ones are the worst. They take over your system like Quicktime on steroids.

Yeah HP drivers have always sucked. If you think 60 MB for a mouse driver is big you should see how big Nvidia drivers are getting. Before we know it they will be 1 GB.

I've seen logitech drivers take over 1GB. On XP.

The OS isn't even released yet and it has already started to cannibalize Vista's market share. Source.

Does not work with direct run programs across network shares.

For what? The drivers themselves are not very large. It's the packaged bloatware that comes along.

To add insult to injury the java updates include useless toolbars in the package. Not everyone has a full duplex 100mbps connection to the 'net.

I find it ridiculous that a 60GLOPS machine takes 20 minutes to install "hp printer software".

I call shens. Blame Logitech for making bloated drivers if that is even remotely near truth.

Anyway... Plug and play for my printer on 7.. Not so on Vista, but it's all kewl because I use 7 now. :)

7 is the shit.. Recognized my shitty wireless card instantly and makes it work.. Vista crashed with it before. O_O (It's a shitty 802.11n card from some no-name company)
