I think your opinion would change if you read a few of the stories in the NRA magazine. Every month, they have a section with ~5-10 stories about home/self defense.
NRA? LOL ... that would be an unbiased party on this debate, i spose...
I recently saw Heston on "columbine' ... i think he disgraced himself rather sadly on that film... NRA should be declared an illegal organization
I think we are well aware of Moore's camera tricks... That... and Heston is 147 years old.

Is this a joke? Or did you not bother to research the facts of your holy-"columbine" film?

And what is your reasoning behind the statement "NRA should be declared an illegal organization"?

Result: Outlawing guns only removes guns from law-abiding citizens and promotes an environmnet that is conducive to criminal activity by placing more power in the hands of the criminals.

absolutely.

When guns are OUTLAWED only the OUTLAWS will have them............

Why is that so hard to understand?

Cuc,

I was completely agreeing with you!

I'm not sure if you're reffering to me or people in general, but just in case, I completely agree. I wasn't being sarcastic.

I'm planning on going through about 500 rounds of .22 shells this weekend. Any other shells are too expensive for me, at least for just shooting around. A friend of mine just purchased his first firearm, he's just never been around them much. I have taken the responsibility of showing him proper use. He learned how to handle a handgun properly after 2 outings, about as long as most people I know did. I just can't understand how people, even children, can play around with a loaded weapon or not practice just a little safety. Of course I have dealt with guys who've hunted for 30 years and they are fricken' idiots. If they stick the rifle into the ground like a cane (yes I've seen people plug their barrels like that) I turn around and run.

BTW, I would join the NRA but they're too liberal on gun control for me. :p

Michael Moore? LOL! That would be a source of unbiased information on this debate, i spose...

Edro13 didn't recommend the NRA Magazine for its insightful commentary. He recommended the NRA Magazine for its monthly feature of reporting authenticated cases of legitimate self-defense using a firearm by private citizens, often against odds which would have meant certain death or serious injury had the defender been forced to depend on lesser means of self-defense.

Nice attempt at diversion, but try to stick with the discussion, eh? The NRA has been running this monthly report almost as long as I've been alive (if not longer) and not a single reported incident has been called into question. The NRA verifies each report before print.

But someone so clearly well informed from the likes of Michael Moore as a source of information surely has no need for factual things, would he?

He thinks Bowling For Columbine was a documentary. What more do you need to know about his capacity for reasoning?

My wife was recently being stalked by some internet lunatic so we got a nice pump action shotgun, some tactical loads, and practiced and practiced some more. Home defense. I also shoot trap and skeet as a hobby/sport for fun. I don't believe in carrying a pistol, though I do have one. I just don't carry.

How was your wife being stalked by an internet lunatic? How would he know your address, appearance, etc?

Well, my wife let some facts slip about some of her hobbies, used the Internet to seach for phone numbers in public directory, narrowed down a location, then started calling. Yes we filed police reports, made copies of messages that were left etc. Final straw was "maybe I'll pay you and your husband a visit..." All from pissing this guy off playing online backgammon...

And you bought a shotgun because of this?

Yes. The guy is within driving distance (found out through police trace.) I travel frequently on business and she felt that she needed something she could handle for protection while I am away. I am not happy about it, but we constantly practice, she feels comfortable with it. If it never gets used I'll be happy.

Im just curious, at what point in the whole "stalking" incident did you first consider or say "lets get a shotgun?" It's interesting that some people would consider, even think about getting a gun in that situation and some people immediately consider it.

Well actually it was my wife's decision. She talked with her brother, who is a big time gun owner and some local law enforcement friends (her mom was a 911 dispatcher for years) and came to the conclusion on her own. It wasn't a rash decision, but given the circumstances, it wasn't one that was made lightly. The only way I agreed to it is if she actually used the gun, and felt comfortable with it. I had her shoot a few hundred shells in various scenarios and she will continue to practice. It's a close-quarters weapon that is reasonably safe. It's been a few weeks since we had a call from the wacko, so maybe it was all for nothing.

So maybe England and Austrlia is on the right path, but it's just too early to tell. I'll like to believe in 20 years when a signficant portion of the guns get out of the system, that these types of crime will diminish greatly. Maybe this is like a broken leg, to set it straight, it's going to take some pain and suffering, but in the long run it'll help the leg heal straighter.

Oh thats just great, the ends justify the means. So if only 10000 people die from gun crimes its all good, because in 20 years, we will (hopefully) only have 10 people die from gun related crimes. Moron logic.

That excuse worked?

I actually don't want a shotgun, nor does she, kept in the house, but we feel it's necessary under the circumstances. If I had wanted a new shotgun, I would have went out and got one.
