Nothing like a hailstorm of 30mm fire to ruin your day hunting infidels.

Suppose it depends on what you are hunting. I was thinking along the lines of deer. From my understanding a .223 isn't really ideal. It just doesn't seem sportsmanlike to start unloading round after round after something that can't fight back :p

I don't advocate banning "assault rifles" because they look scary. I just don't see much practical purpose for them (I do not advocate banning them at all, sans automatics).

Basically what I'm trying to say is that if I was buying a gun for personal protection, I'd be looking at a pistol. If I was buying a rifle for target plinking and such I'd be looking at an M-14.

You cant find a purpose for an M4, but you can find one for an M-14? You serious?

And who goes "plinking" with a .308? An afternoon of that will cost you $300.

How is an M-14 not an assault rifle, but a M4 is? Is it the fact that one if made out of wood, and the other 'scary' black synthetic material?

M1A (Civ version of the M-14) = 20 rounds of semi-auto .308

Ar-15(Civ version of the M-4) = 30 rounds of semi-auto .223

I'm aware of what the guns are, thanks :p If I was going to spend the money to buy a rifle, I'd get the one I'd like. If I'm forking over a 1000 bucks for a rifle I want to make sure what it hits isn't getting back up :p I'd go with the synthetic stock. Something like

I don't really see a practical use for most of these assault rifles outside of shooting bowling pins or well...people. That is what they were designed to do. In NYS I think its illegal to hunt with a .223. I think there are better options for hunting even if you can. You should note that I'm not advocating banning them because of what I think. I'm not advocating banning them at all! I'm just stating an opinion.

If you are going to build a straw man to argue against me with then you should at least get your terms right. The M-14 is considered a battle rifle. If I remember my history correctly it's the spiritual successor of the BAR. The M16/M4 AR15/Car15 are assault rifles.

I'm not sure why your arguing with me since we basically share the same position.

The M-14 is the successor to the M1 Garand. You said in your previous post that you dont think assault rifles have a purpose. Whats the difference between a battle rifle and an assault rifle? You know that the M-14 is wayyyy deadlier than any M4 "assault rifle", right?

Oh, and good like finding an M1A SOCOM for 1k.

Battle Rifles tend to fire much more powerful rounds. Which is sort of the point of what I said. In my opinion, the .223 fired by the M4/16 and it's civilian variants isn't really strong enough to be used for most hunting applications. A .308 will kill a deer.

I don't feel a personal assault rifle has much practical purpose. It's too weak for hunting (unless you are going after varmints I suppose) and too large for CQ personal defense (though carbines are okay). Unless your plan is to stop an invading army I just don't see why you'd own one other than to go target shooting on the weekend.

As I said, that's just my opinion. You haven't really explained other uses for it though in any of your posts.
