I googled a bit. I am not the only one with this problem. Although, to be fair, most people want to use a joystick only for flying airplanes in GTAV. It seems there are 3 potential solutions.

Most? Can you find one single other person on Earth who is trying to use a joystick to control steering a car and isn't doing it on a bet, like someone trying to use a Guitar Hero guitar controller to fly a helicopter in BF4? I fully support your right to do whatever works for you, but you can't expect Rockstar to design their game to support a control scheme that one person on Earth uses. At a certain point, it's on you to change to agree with everyone else.

I'm sure that if more games would do native joystick support, more people would use them. Maybe not in GTAV, but in other games.

One problem with many joysticks is that they have very few buttons. A trigger button, and maybe 4-5 more buttons. That's not enough to play GTAV. Or an MMO. Or RPGs where you have many abilities. But my joystick (the Fighterstick by CH Products) has 20 buttons. (Because each 4-way hatswitch is basically 4 buttons). I use the pinky-button as "shift" button. So I have 2x19=38 abilties on my joystick. Even in a game like WoW, with its zillions of abilities, 38 buttons is enough.

As JEffMD said: an X/Y-axis is an X/Y-axis. It shouldn't be hard for Rockstar to make it so that the game recognizes the X/Y-axis on any DirectX device. But for some reason they chose not to. And to make myself clear: I am not complaining. I just wanted to know about possible steering sensitivity.

And my problem about steering sensitivity is not just with a (digital) joystick. It's the same with a keyboard. You need to very quickly tap the AD-keys. And even then cars still oversteer. I have a friend who plays GTAV too. He uses WASD in first person to walk around. But he uses his gamepad for driving and flying. Because driving with the keyboard is a pain. And looking around while walking with a gamepad is a pain.

Got a question for those who use a gamepad.
When you use your gamepad, can you still configure and use keys on your keyboard ? In other words, does a combination of gamepad and keyboard work at the same time ?

Ive found gamepads and joysticks only added to my frustrations on every PC game Ive tried them with, the only exceptions being the Lego platformers that I used to play with my son when he was younger. The best option for me is to just stick with the KB+M and learn to use it like it was intended. I hard a rough time flying in GTA5 until I switched all the num-pad keys to my mouse in the options, now Im doing great with helos, but need more practice planes. I do okay in planes until I need to fly upside down, that's things get weird and I usually crash and burn if Im close to the ground.

What card you recommend to play GTA 5 easily and without any lag or something!!
Now I have Radeon HD 6570 1 GB! I don't about it, that it is enough or OK?

gtx 970. plays everything maxed except grass on high, constant 60fps with vsync.

I used to be an avid PC gamer most of my life and swore by the WASD and numpad for all my gaming. Until GTA3. Since then, I cannot play a GTA title without a gamepad. For GTAV PC version I use my xbox 360 controller and it works great. Being I played GTAV on the 360 like 6 times, using this controller for the PC version is fantastic. I tried the KB mouse routine and found I just coulnt do it anymore. I wish, now that I am back into PC gaming over consoles, that older PC titles would adhere to the 360 controller scheme. Perfect example it Mass Effect 2. On the xbox the controls were great, on PC there is no controller option at all. Why????

So far I definitely prefer the 360 controller for GTA V on PC as well. I'm not against using a controller for the right kind of game, if a controller is supported well.

But for every FPS game: WASD for life yo! :D

Late to the party...but I am just BLOWN AWAY by this game.

There is no day where I am not in awe about the details, fun, sound track or whatever in this game...

Yesterday I discovered director mode... cheezus I had so much fun...

And this with only 2% into the story.

Just snagging a car, and say, race for some hours on the highways etc...I can't get over the scope and especially the details of this game.

(I also discovered yesterday they featured "The Time is Now" by Moloko somewhere on their radio stations and was surprised...I didn't know anyone knew this song...I always liked it but it's sorta rare).

To make things perfect, despite the scope and details (strip club...LOL)...the game runs like butter on my i7 and GTX 970. (This even with extended advanced distance scaling which I turned up a little and MSAAx4).

by the way...USE A CONTROLLER...nothing is more fun than driving with a controller.

This is THE game which I think alone would be worth building/purchasing a high-end computer for...just absolutely amazing and finally a port which actually LOOKS like devs cared about making it good on PC too.

Yep, me too. I only have the game since this weekend. So far I'm just enjoying driving around in cars, looking at the landscape. The size of this game is just incredible.
And when I'm done driving around, I'll start playing the real game. :)

I'm sure nobody is interested in this, but I'm gonna tell you anyway: I have programmed a first version on my idea for my joystick. Great improvement. I can now (easily) change lanes while driving full speed on the highways. Now I need to do a little tweaking, and I'm sure driving will be buttersmooth. No need for a gamepad (for me)

I just find myself relying on the GPS too much. Wish I can know the streets just by looking at it, but I can't alas...

I do wish they let us steal clothes and stuff in game... but they don't... at least they let us kill prostitutes.

I switch between. I have my traditional keyboard and mouse setup, and I have a wireless 360 gamepad.

I switch casually. If I'm on foot, I use keyboard usually. if I'm going to quickly drive somewhere, I might not pick up the gamepad. But for the most part I use the gamepad for any vehicle. And I often find myself using the gamepad when I get out of a vehicle and are back on foot. But if I get into a firefight, I go right to the mouse/keyboard.

I hadn't thought about this as a possible control scheme.

It is much better, because I'd prefer the First Person on foot view, but that really begs for KB&M. But vehicle control, at least cars, I don't ever care to mess with with anything other than a controller.

The only mouse control I use for this game would be running and gunning...anything else and I'm using 100% keyboard. Even flying the plane and helicopter is something I find easier to do with the keyboard and not the mouse.

Game is fun but the crashes are super annoying.

Seriously guys, driving with controller is SO much more fun. It's also easier. I am usually also a WASD and mouse guy, but this is just way better with the controller. Now, I still have a Throttle here and a joystick...I am sure I might find a use for them too in the game...

Yeah I use the Xbox 360 controller for driving. It's worlds better than the mouse & keyboard.

I'm trying the x360ce tool. It seems pretty cool. I got analog walking working. And analog steering too ! Steering is very fluent now.

I just couldn't get accelerate and brake to work. Edit: found it in-game. accelerate and brake are not on the thumb-sticks, but on the big buttons on the front. Almost there.

Driving controls are easier, but due to the nature of oncoming traffic I find the ability to freely mouselook while driving indispensable enough that I rough it with keyboard controls. Especially when it comes to shooting while driving... insanely easier and more accurate with mouse and keyboard.

I prefer WASD in all driving games. I 've gotten pretty good with the old tap, tap method and finesse. In fact, I can feel a delay in the controller vs. keyboard when turning.

Same here, Ive seen a lot of people driving with gamepads that were far less fluid than I am with a KB+M. Its all in what you are used to I suppose.

Yep, being able to free look has major advantages in GTA.The freedom of the camera is awesome, I love being able to swing around and watch my six while driving full speed ahead.

Received my new 1080p IPS panel,GTA5 was the first game i ran and wow it looks simply more amazing then before. It's a glossy IPS so the colors of the GTA5 world suddenly look much more vibrant.

Performance on the 970 is still good enough with adjustments, the performance i find acceptable has vram usage according to menu in the 2.8gb usage area. That is no MSAA,advanced sliders off and Grass on Very High with all else maxed out.Officially this is the most vram intenseful game i currently play.

Have a somewhat fix to the shimmering in this game.
Turn off all the "optimizations" for anisotropic and trilinear filtering in the nvidia control panel. For whatever reason, it seems like the optimizations cause more distant things to not be filtered properly and shimmer.
There also seems to be some shimmering due to the distance sliders, seems like small objects are actually being clipped at a distance.

There's still some shimmering due to the post processing filters (depth of field blur and such) but not much you can do about those without removing the effects or raising the resolution.

Yesterday, between missions I made a trip all the way up to the North, into the mountains. Took a ride up in a cable car, watching the sunset etc...took a bike ride up some mountain paths..just fun things "in between".

And at the same time I know I haven't even seen, say...10% of the entire game.

I don't feel like over-exaggerating here, but it might well be the best game of all times..or at least amongst the top 3, and this includes games back from when I had my first computer in the 1985s something.

The game world and locations I can see but best game in the overall meaning of the word I don't agree.

Until you play the poor single campaign that is an advert for online and see plot points and areas dead end and go nowhere. Strip out the heists (online ad hint hint) and this is the worst GTA game post III plot wise. Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay and Grapeseed don't feature apart from a brief heist and some throwaway random missions. The caricatures er characters are barely fleshed out either.

Got a question for those who use a gamepad.
When you use your gamepad, can you still configure and use keys on your keyboard ? In other words, does a combination of gamepad and keyboard work at the same time ?

It accepts input/control from both simultaneously.

My gf took the controller when I wasn't paying attention and start messing with me from the other room. I noticed pretty quick, especially when I noticed the controller was missing. It was transparent though. The only giveaway is that the HUD will display button commands based on the last device to give it input. So if you are using the controller, it will say 'Press X to skip' but if you touch the key/mouse it will say Press 'Enter'.

The dual combo works smoothly, imho. I actually really appreciate that I can flop between each input method casually.
