My whole point of rallying in this thread isn't to advocate this policy and to give that cashier a pat on the back. I'm in here to show some people that little things add up.
Sure, give the cashier a pat on the back for "saving" money, but who pissed off a customer that won't be back. Keep that up, and the .02 cents they are saving won't matter much. You can save all the money you can, and still go out of business by not meeting customer needs.
I wonder what that location's performance stats are compared to others that aren't so anal about the sauce packets.
As I stated before, there are ways to cut losses due to handing out sauce packets, without having a manager hassle with a customer about a 2 cent item.
