Rylan: It is third person by default,I think there is an option for first person( I can't confirm that until I get my copy).

I have been reading info/feedback from here .

YES Mem is correct, default is third person.

You can select first person, but in one of the developer walkthroughs I watched said the game was really designed around the third person aspect.

Especially the combat, they said you get a better feel and is more enjoyable in the third person view.

I hope it's in 3rd-person as it's way better for sword play and kinda 'forces' developers to enhance animations *cough* Oblivion (loved the game, but movement could have been more fluid). Also, can't wait til it comes out. Played Gothic II, loved it, but was hard at the beginning. I could barely kill 1 orc when I first got into the camp, but eventually started taking on 3 at a time.

Gothic 3 review@CVG.

Technical issues aside, though, Gothic 3 is definitely something any self-respecting RPG-lover will want to get his or her teeth into.

The game manages to blend just the right amounts of combat, NPC interaction, character development, exploration and epic, save-the-world storytelling into the sort of potion that your typical beardie will gulp down with wild-eyed abandon.

It'll keep said beardie occupied for days (and that's just the first play-through), so it's pretty good value for money as well. To top it off, it's got bags of eye candy if you've got a beefy PC.

I'm looking forward to trying to find the time to play this game. I played the first gothic, and after I got over the weird controls, it was an absolute joy of a game. The second gothic was also good, but after I killed a dragon or two life snuck up on me and I didn't have time to finish it.

I seriously don't think i'll find the time to even mess around with Gothic 3 until Christmas :(

Please make sure that your speakers are correctly set up in the Microsoft Windows Control Panel (Sounds - Speakers - Advanced)

5. Multi-Monitor support
Gothic III does not support multiple monitors. Although if you want to play the game on a secondary monitor please change the following line in the ge3.ini:
AdapterNumber=1

6. Fixes for potential problems on AMD X2 processors
Many games encounter stuttering/random slow down problems on AMD X2 processors. Instructions how to fix this problem can be found here:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781

Installing the "amdcpusetup.exe" and the "AMD_DualCore_Optimizer.exe" from the support directory on the Gothic III game disc helps to remove these problems.

7. Emergency key

9. Gothic III can't find the "d3dx9_29.dll" error
Please install the DirectX 9.0c August Distribution from the Gothic III DVD.

10. Streaming stalls
On some systems the streaming from hard drive can cause framerate drops and game stalls. Defragmenting your hard drive and lowering the texture quality settings in the game reduces these effects.

11. Copy Protection
The copy protection of this game requires the installation of drivers ? they are installed automatically during the installation of the game. These can be uninstalled completely by executing the file Support\DrvSetup.exe on your disc. For more details please visit the following URL: http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm?page=5.5.htm

I dont like the sound of that.
Sounds similar to starforce.

Think the US version will have this on it?

It does not use Starforce so relax. FYI some of my friends have the game already,no problems with the above, main problem you will discover is the odd bug or too with game itself which is to be expected with a new game.

Yep they pre-ordered like I did, however the online shop I ordered it from is awaiting stock still, so I cancelled my order with them and went to my local shop in London and picked up my copy.
First impressions:
Stability of the game is excellent (0 crashes in 3.5 hours),I had to fine tune the settings,so I recommend you use custom setting, playing at 1680x1050 with 4xAf was getting 15-35fps depending where I'm, so you need a good PC unless you drop resolution down.Turning shadows off helped a lot.

This game you will die a lot,Oblivion is like a holiday camp compared to this one, sometimes you keep getting knocked down by creatures(wildboar for example) until you die,got knocked down 4 times in one second lol...so save often.
Only seen one bug so far with a NPC ,half his body stuck in a ceiling but I could talked to him ok.

Some tips, to pick things up like weapons from ground (and also talk with people)use left mouse click. To kill an orc after knockdown hold right mouse button and then long left mouse click, you will soon get the hang of it.
Get some armour from rebel camp or orc camp soon as possible.
Graphics not quite as good as Oblivion but still good IMHO.

This is a tough game even on easy mode ,I'm currently at level 5,you will learn by trial and error on which things are easier to kill etc... in the wild, exp varies from 25 to 100 from what I have killed so far but goes higher.Wild boar for example gave me 100 exp,but they can kill you fast if you get knocked down , there are group attacks too by creatures.

Game area is huge, btw when fighting you have quick attack, power attack, standard attack depending what mouse buttons you use. There is a quicksave but this still pauses the game for a few seconds while saving.

Music is good so overall no real problems.

oh bloody heck . . . you're English
:Q

:D

actually, i loved London . . . probably my favourite European city [although i lived in Dublin for a few years]

ANYWAY . . . thanks for the early impressions. i definitely WILL pick up this game. Yes, Oblivion was a 'cakewalk' and damn easy to 'figure' - even for a raw RPG n00b like i was.

maybe i can get you to send me one early :p

:D
[j/k'ing . . . although we could start a transatlantic 'service' for impatient gamers . . . hmmm]

Hehe .....some more tips that will help you,buy a map this will give your position on the map, also spend points in strength and sword skill,I even put some points in smithy, I made a broadsword which does nice damage,I also learned how to sharpen my sword too ,all these little things will help you.

Making money is easy(virtually everything can be sold even if it makes little profit for you).Quite a few items are very expensive so buying some things will take you ages.

Some of the hard mobs that were on there own, I used a bow to kill them, hit and run works pretty well if you can keep a safe distance from them.
Game is getting easier now, but I'm still in the starter area so I expect tougher mobs the more I explore, still no crashes gameplay wise.

Do you know if the game supports widescreen. I had read somewhere that you could accommodate WS by making changes to the config file but if it is supported in the video menu that would be even better.

Yes it does , listed in options 1680x1050 native res ( for my 20" WS LCD) also my friend was running his 19"WS in native format too 1440x900 res.

Update:found some Ogres and gaint trolls ,talk about instant death,I love the fact that you can die with one hit in this game hehe, makes exploring dangerous and fun.

Btw some of the US have got their copy already ,so looks like some of you guys in the states ordered the UK version from Gogamer.

The copy protection method sounds rather suspicious, nevertheless. Also, there was already one patch the day of release, and from the look of the JoWood Tech Support Forum, there are more than merely a "few" bugs remaining.

I have 0 problems with the game or the protection ,same goes for my friends,as to the forums yeah I read about all the bugs but imagine my surprise in finding the game plays a lot better (bug wise) then what they have posted,I can only tell you by my real experience with the game.

FYI I have the patch installed.

why do i feel exactly the opposite?

i'm also anxious [/i]to check it out . . .
but . . .

i'd MUCH rather play a patched and smooth running game

the 'issues' with Oblivion were irritating as hell and the patch only addressed games that were started after the patch was released.

now if there was a demo . . .

and isn't the US version supposed to ship with the second patch . . . or this one?

If it's like the previous Gothics, the game itself will be great, but best experienced after 2 or 3 patches. Just like Oblivion (Gamebryo), the hardware requirments are obviously very steep, probably best not to attempt it with anything less than a 7800GT.

I'm just exploring doing a few quests as I level up and having fun,the wild boars you see meantioned a lot in the other Gothic forums can be a pain if they get the first hit in but I find if you use right mouse button(fast attack) and time it right you can kill them first, they are still dangerous however if you miss a hit .

I'm level 14 now and master swordsman but even I have to be very careful with mobs etc... in the wild, depending on how weak or strong they are.Still no crashes,no graphical glitches I have seen.
Those that have played the first two Gothic games, all I can say is that it does have the Gothic feel and gameplay.

Lets get on to my negatives of the game since people are more concerned with that, long loading times etc...so pain if you die and have to reload, can be tough learning curve for the beginner ,especially those that have never played RPG types games, mobs could do with better balancing ie wild boars should be easier to kill and they need to do sometime about how fast they can knock you down multiple times until you are dead which only takes seconds, even when you are at a high level.Lot of things you have to find and discover yourself like trainers etc...

It's demanding on hardware ,so as I have stated will need to fine tune it to your own PC with custom settings and resolution of your choice.Lot of walking or running in the game,I do have two teleport devices but only for two village towns, hear there are more at other towns.A lot of places you have to find yourself, no auto travel like Oblivion,to me this is a good thing.

However the good points outweigh the bad points, especially if you want to explore every cave/area and do as many quests as possible which will take you ages, so a good long term game. You can play as first or third person view, and customize the keyboard controls for gameplay, defaults seem ok for me.

and isn't the US version supposed to ship with the second patch . . . or this one?

Yes should have all the latest patches up to when it goes gold for US.Only one patch so far ,but sure more will follow pretty soon. Can't say that I have encountered any show stopper bugs or major problems so far.

Gothic 2 used SecuROM, Sony's copy protection scheme, I can only assume Gothic 3 would use SecuROM as well. The biggest problem I know of with SecuROM is that it is incompatible with Samsung dvd drives, and refuses to authenticate the game disc.

And what you wrote is the exact reason why I would rather wait for the US version in a month. I've read several not-too-good things about the playability of the game on other boards around the net.

Well, that's wonderful as I have a Samsung DVD drive. Should I not even open the box then and send it back?
