Ford to build its smallest engine ever

Ford will build a three-cylinder engine -- its smallest engine ever -- with better fuel economy and all the power of a larger one, the company said Thursday.

The new EcoBoost engine, comparable to that found in a cruiser motorcycle, is in the final phase of development. EcoBoost engines will be available in 90 percent of Ford's North American lineup by 2013, the automaker said in a press release.

The 1.0-liter engine will deliver horsepower and torque outputs equivalent to or better than most conventional 1.6-liter gasoline engines, according to the release.

May have the power of a 1.6l.

If one calls that power :(

Take that technology and make a 2L engine that has the power of a 3.2.
Then drop that engine into the lineup.

Ford was supposed to release the 2.0L I-4 Ecoboost last year when the new Explorer came out, along with it going into the Edge. It was late, so it turned into late availability for the 2011 models. Still late, so now they're saying 2012 models. And will be in the 2013 Taurus (and I'm sure others).

Remains to be seen a.) how much $$$ it will cost over the 3.5L V-6 (non-EB) that are already in these rides and b.) what type of EPA MPG's it'll put up in each application.

But, Ford is doing what you suggest...

Quit buying SUV'S!

Buy Smaller cars!

Buy a bus Pass!

Ride a Train!

Move closer to your job!

The Ford 3 Cyl looks interesting. It should actually cut down on weight and the amount of metal that has to be moved to keep the engine running. Looks very promising. However, I would never run out any buy something like this the first year it comes out. Let someone else be the guinne pig! I am not going to pay my good money to be a lab rat!

Ford came out with a truck engine a while back that has costs lots of people a lot of money.

Buyer beware!

Hopefully GM & Chrysler can follow that concept.

will it then work on deisels? Who knows - Ford seems to be playing this close to their vest.

If they could implement this on the Powerstrokes that go into the F Series, it would give a big boost over the others.

What oil/gas company do you work for?

I drive a car that gets 35 mpg (Hyundai Tiburon)

What do you drive, an Escalade?

I drive an 2005 330i and get 23 MPG thank you very much and I fill up every 8-9 days on premium at ~ $4.00 per gallon (16.5 gallon tank)

which means I use 752 gallons per year and a price increase of $1.50 per gallon means I pay $1129 more than I would per year than if gas was at 2.50 (if it that is what you consider normal) which is $94 a month roughly half of my TV/internet bill

Each dollar it goes up I am out about $65/month--and I have the best hybrid on the market. For others who have less efficient vehicles and/or make less money/live closer to the edge it can certainly contribute to pain in a big way.

I am paying about 95 more a month it is certainly annoying but in the grand scheme of things it is certainly does not deserve the kind of attention it is getting.

Nope. Prices falling. Highest price for Regular is $4.79

You lose, please ban yourself.

If he was really concerned about gas prices than you'd think he would learn to go to sam's club where the price is $1 cheaper

there are gas stations around me that are almost $5.00 for premium but I am not dumb enough to go to them when there is one for almost a dollar less

Gas could be $99 a gallon and have no affect on you since you are obviously a very rich Republican. Congrats to you but most Americans are not well off like you and that extra $1129 hurts the bottom line a lot. It;s like getting a substantial pay cut.

Amazing how he won't admit it's $5, it's certainly not $4 anymore.

I believe he has a personal profit connection in that website he keeps promoting and hawking that is always behind in prices and doesn't cover all the stations.

Anyway there is no Sams Club or Walmart in the city of Chicago.

A little research goes a long way.

They have been kept out because they don't have a living wage for employees. That may change with the new Mayor though.

what they're doing with gas engines has been done on diesels for a long time. direct injection, turbocharging, and piston cooling jets. so, they've already implemented this on the powerstrokes.

Well, higer fuel costs are having one positive result: plastic clamshell packaging is going away!

The Pyranna, the Jokari Deluxe, the Insta Slit, the ZipIt and the OpenIt apply blades and batteries to what should be a simple task: opening a retail package.

But the maddening — and nearly impenetrable — plastic packaging known as clamshells could become a welcome casualty of the difficult economy. High oil prices have manufacturers and big retailers reconsidering the use of so much plastic, and some are aggressively looking for cheaper substitutes.

"With the instability in petroleum-based materials, people said we need an alternative to the clamshell," said Jeff Kellogg, vice president for consumer electronics and security packaging at the packaging company MeadWestvaco.

Damn they are playing games.

The 2 stations closest to me knocked a dime back off after they jumped up 30 cents last 2 days.
No, they didn't. You're lying again, dmcowen.

This time he is not exaggerating.

I am presently outside of Detroit and what he saw happen in Chicago also happened out here. This weekend, I went over to Westerm Michigan and the price jump was there also.

This AM, a station that was at 4.14 on Fri was 4.04 today.

the jump happened to those areas that are "affected" by the problem in the pipeline last week.

Typical price speculation until the situation is known and stabilized. then it will slowly drop down when the overall problem has been eliminated.

OK - so the diesels have been in the lead. Heck I was working on those things for Cummins 10 years ago for their diesels.

I don't think I've ever done this before.

Thank you CC

Gas down to $3.25/gal at the station where I purchase gas. Down $0.18/gas in the past week.

Hot damn. It's still $3.80 in my area and has remained steady at that price for about a month. Lucky Texans--low gas prices and low real estate prices.

As for the end of plastic clamshells, I say good riddance! I hate them because they make it more difficult to pack up defective products or stuff you don't want back into the original packaging for return to the store. I'd much rather have nice cardboard boxes.

Ohio gas prices up 8 cents from last week

Ohio gas prices have jumped 8 cents in the last week as refinery issues continue to pump up prices throughout the Midwest.

Ongoing refining problems in the Midwest have pushed gasoline prices sharply higher in the region.

Michigan's average price for regular is $4.12; motorists in Illinois are paying $4.15, on average.

======================================================
Wish I could find a station around $4.15, nothing under $4.50 here in the city
