Cost me $55 to fill up this morning. That's less than the $68 I paid a few months ago. I guess it is kinda dropping.

According to P&Ners, apparently this only applies to me in Chicago.

High gas prices still sizzling as summer approaches

There’s less money this summer for hotel rooms, surfboards and bathing suits. It’s all going into the gas tank.

As Memorial Day weekend opens, the nationwide average for a gallon of unleaded is $3.81. Though prices have drifted lower in recent days, analysts expect average price for 2011 to come in higher than the previous record, $3.25 in 2008. A year ago, gas cost $2.76.

With Gas still well over $4 a gallon in Chicago, the summer driving season is looking grim.

And as those of us with cooler heads prevailed, the $5 by Memorial you kept pimping in silly links never materialized, a great surprise (not really).

What happened to $5 in Chicago by Memorial Day? Oh wait, it's dropping in price instead.

Hopefully this nails hard the smug idiots from states like Texas and the rest that haven't been paying what Chicagoans have been paying all along:

Comin' this summer... $5 gas

The living's easy -- the driving is hard

The forecast for the summer driving season: Hit the road early. Not to beat the traffic, but to beat the higher gas prices expected in mid-July.

Goldman Sachs' crystal ball is proclaiming that oil will soon soar to $135 a barrel, and likely have service stations jacking up fuel prices to $5 a gallon in New York just like the summer of 2008 that preceded the recession.

"Drivers try to do what they can, but they have to go almost all the places they go," says energy researcher David Greene of the Department of Energy Web site fueleconomy.gov. "There's no magic gizmo that will drastically change someone's gasoline use."

And for that reason, as well as global uncertainty, Goldman and JP analysts see a return to high oil and gas prices in the coming months. Without a significant decrease in American demand -- or a sudden desire not to commute or drive to the shore -- $5 a gallon is likely on the horizon.

Oil climbs above $102 on weaker US dollar

Oil prices climbed above $102 a barrel Tuesday as talk of more financial aid for Greece helped weaken the U.S. dollar and traders worried about turmoil in Libya and the Middle East.

=========================================

If traders "worry" so much they should not "traders".

It's beyond absurd

It won't change WHY Chicago pays more though so if it does hit them hard you will still be hit even harder.

Judging by the Goldman-Sachs analysts' track record, I think they're staring at a snow globe rather than at a crystal ball.

For those of you who enjoy listening to talk radio with wireless headphones (while you're cooking or doing the dishes or whatever), NPR's On Point aired a show about high gas prices today. (It should be about 45 minutes long.) Enjoy:

Summer 2011 On $4 A Gallon With regular unleaded around the $4 mark, we look at life in a summer of high gas prices.

Gas down to between $3.64 and $3.69 in Lexington today. Peaked at $4.05 a few weeks ago. Just hope it continues to go down.....really hate to see the economy tank again because of a push from high energy prices, not to mention the usual resulting inflation on other goods that are transported via truck (i.e. most of them).

Jumped from $3.63 to $3.85 today. Quoted so show that I had indeed posted when it went down and not just when it goes up, lol! :p

Side note, just saw on CNBC that oil dropped under $100 because of dismal economic forecasts for the US economy going forward.

In Michigan I saw a gas station at 3.68 gallon, 4 hours later when I drive by again it's at 4.20. A freaking 52 cent increase per gallon in 4 hours!

??? What was/is the prices in the surrounding stations?

That just doesn't sound right.

Edit: Although charts show a large spike today in the average price in Michigan.

If anyone is looking to save money on gas this is pretty good.

https://www.penfed.org/productsAndRates/creditCards/RewardCards.asp

5% back on gas and it is credited back to you every month and it even works places like Sam's Club/ BJ's where the Amex gas cards don't give you 5%

I have been using it for years and it has easily saved me hundreds on gas

combining that with Gasbuddy (iphone app) than i easily spend much less on gas than most people.

I wonder how long they'll maintain that 5% back on gas. Years ago I had a credit card from one of the most prominent companies that paid back 5% on gas and groceries. It was great. Of course, after I had the card for two years they axed it.

I have had the card since 07 it used to be 1.25% on all purchases but they did get rid of that last year but the 5% seems to be still going strong
