And this is exactly why I could never buy the Titan. Not because of it's $1,000. Not because it's green/red/etc etc etc. I could never purchase a product with such an INSANE price premium that did not use quality parts. When the card specs were brought to light many people jumped on some of the quality decisions (VRM phases, TDP limits, etc) which was pooh pooh'd because it's FAST. So besides coil whine there is also the ongoing issue of cpu throttling when fans ramp up. Not bad for a card that was supposed to replace the 580 a few years ago but was purposely deferred due to arrogance.

That's what I have been saying all this time. Its ridiculous but people will defend it.

What really makes me wonder is with this new bios someone created to reduce the throttling... How well will the power delivery hold up before something burns out?? That card was not over engineered by any means.

Maybe the extra load of the illumination is causing the coil whine.

I'm not sure on solid choke price but let's say an extra 5-10 bucks per card for solid capacitors. My card has them and it was more expensive mainly because it was the GHz edition. HIS also claimed to use solid chokes but nope I had that card too and it squeeled like a pig. This one now is Fine you may hear a faint sound in menus when the game boots up but nothing ever while you are playing or fully utilizing it.

This is what my two sound like. They sounded worse when I tested them in the other machine. That may have something to do with them still having the air coolers on and it helping to amplify/resonate the noise.

Really doesn't bother me at all, and with the case side panel on I can't even hear it unless I listen for it and there is no noise in the house.

Yours sounds pretty bad in comparison.

Return it until you have no whine and if this is not possible get a refund. I wouldn't accept anything less at the premium that card cost.

Last card that I had coil whine on was the GTX 285. I had 2x SLI and one was terrible. RMA'd it and got another with whine. Replaced that and finally got a good one. Have not experienced any coil whine with my former 5870 or current 670. Definitely should not accept that for any price IMHO.

Think man, think. If it's a fan issue, no big deal the replacement will very likely be fine. If it's coil whine, then it could be part of a design limitation and the replacement could have the exact same problem.

What if it only happens when FPS is in the thousands? I probably wouldn't bother with an exchange... In normal playing conditions (ie 60-120fps) the card doesn't sound like that....

I guess that would be up to the person who owns it, imo of course I like to run without vysnc and bench so I'd return it.... Unless it was a great clocker, then I'd try something like nail polish. :thumbsup:

I believe that's what I get in the menus. I consider that normal. I dont get any noise at all what so ever playing when getting the stated fps mentioned. When the previous card I had squeeled in the 60-120 range I couldn't stand it. Could hear it over the fans and even the sound turned up.

Actually I have to side with Balla here. That ugly noise is unacceptable no matter what is causing it, and the card needs to be returned. If the next one sounds the same, keep returning until you get one that does not have the fault, or get your money back. I am sure it is interesting for the engineers to know what is the exact cause, but as a costumer you just want to get the working product that you paid for.

That said, I also do not think it sounds like coil whine, rather more like some kind of mechanical resonance effect. Ship one my way and I can investigate ()

Yeah the first 7970 I had from HIS ice Q whined like crazy all the time. Even dragging on the desktop.

I had to argue with newegg to refund me even though it was less than 30 days. Replaced it with the card I have now and no more whine.

My brother got one of those (HIS 7970G IceQ) as well, and it had horrible coil whine.
Possibly there's a bad batch of those out, since some other user reviews don't appear to indicate this issue as being present in all cards.

Yea well newegg cs made me confirm with HIS the card was having issues. That wad a pain as their dept is in China and they responded in broken English. By the time I sent it back to newegg 2-3 weeks had passed.
