Hey Balla, would you recommend using CLU on a GPU? I mean, did you see much of a reduction in temps vs. the stock paste? I have MX-4 on mine and it seems like after a month of use the temps steadily go up to 60-61c while gaming. As before 55C was the highest.

MX-4 tends to bleed out over time. Liquid metal thermal compounds tend to have less of an issue with bleeding. Try AS5 as a cheaper alternative to CLU.

Had the day off and went down to Microcenter this afternoon. You guys are a bad influence on me. :D

Couple Costa Rica 4670ks and a 4770k (Batch L310B562). Hopefully one of them overclocks well.

Pretty typical for the MC guys from what I've seen, 3-10 or more, I think they ebay the weak ones for profit.

I went through 3x 4770k CPUs myself. They were all mehhh clockers. Batch L310 should be decent from what I heard.

Sure, to some1 whos $$'s means nothing.. in which case I dont understand why you dont buy it pre-overclocked-certified to begin with.
This so called "upgrade" makes close to zero sense to me.. But hey, I dont claim to understand everything.

Did you pickup the board for $115 + the $40 bundle discount?

It's something humans do, called "fun." Logic is not a necessary component of this activity.

If it was in my budget (and I lived near a MC), I'd likely be having similar kinds of fun, myself.

That's what I'm hoping. I went through the whole thread over at XS and the L310 batches seem to do pretty well. The guy at MC was super patient and helped me look through all the chips to find the good ones. I was tempted to try an L315 since I haven't seen any reports yet but decided against it.

I don't know of any place that pre-certifies chips. Tank Guys used to guarantee certain batch numbers for an added cost but I haven't heard of anyone doing that lately.

I really won't be out much in the end. I can still sell the two chips I don't end up using and the motherboard was only $75. I'm basically going from a high-end SB mobo to a budget enthusiast Haswell board so I'll probably break even when all is said and done.

Yup. I was stoked to see they still had some in stock. The guy helping me said they just got a shipment in with 12 more. Crazy deal on a good board.

+1

Part of the fun is seeing what the silicon lottery gives you and in this case I really won't be out much to try a few different chips.

The upgrade won't make a lot of sense in terms of 1080p/1440p gaming whatsoever, but the platform truly is an improvement, and OP should definitely come out pretty even on the end result pricing. For fun of tinkering and getting a fresh platform with improved SATA/USB/PCIe, I think it's just fine.

Looking at the same board and a 4670, let us know what you think of the board.

thought about the 4930k or 4960x 6-core ivy-e or haswell-e?

A 4770k is pretty nice too. I wouldn't trade a 4.8g 2600k for a 5g 2500k. Probably have the same results.

edit: nvm see you already bought 3 quad core haswells

Now if we could just do SMP with 4670Ks, then we'd really have something!

A guy can dream, right?

Been busy the last couple days and had to reload the OS. Should be able to test the first chip tonight and see how she does.

 It's a good dream.

Stinks you had to reload your OS :( Keep us up to date on how well they OC.

I just got back from MC and picked up that same mobo and a 4670k. I cant believe the price on this board. I feel like I just got away with murder knowing that this same board is $180 on newegg. I was this combo or a AMD 8350+990FX gigabyte.
Havent overclocked yet.

Got the OS sorted and had a couple hours to test the chips. With a semi-dumpy A50 cooler I ran OCCT for at least 10 minutes to try and quickly zero in their potential. Didn't get a chance to mess with the 4770k much but this is what I got for the 4670s:

4670k #1 - 4.4Ghz@1.25V
4670k #2 - 4.5Ghz@1.25V

I'll test the 4770k tonight and see what she'll do.

Seriously. I thought originally it was a pricing mistake but they've been selling it for a couple weeks at that price. Weird thing is it's cheaper than the UD3H by $40-50.
