Sorry to disappoint you two, but no rises will be had out of me this day. You'll have to find another to antagonize.

This is a video card sub thread, what car ya'll drive, is irrelevant to this topic. Bring it else where.

And...That is not a simple gaming PC for over $6k. A simple gaming PC would cost <$1k.

No one did ;)

Someone brought up the car someone else drove though, as if it were relevant to the thread, and tried to start a fight about it for some odd reason. Oh well.

Err, made of money? Computers are one of the cheapest hobbies one can have.

Mosey over to the garage forum every now and then... ;)

Maybe in the US...but I guess my PC gaming hobby has taken a back seat to golf nowadays, still 6 x SSD?, cheapest here is almost $600NZD, so thats over $3kUS, $ a gig?
Thats not cheap mate, anyway you dice it.

Remind me, why does how much someone spends on something so important? You must have had a reason to bring it up. Perhaps that reason is personal?

Its just jealousy dude, most would love to be able to purchase that type and as much hardware..

Screw it man, I want people on these forums to blow their money on Titan cards so I can see some benchies! I won't be participating in those benchies however.

Compare it to what folks spend on hunting, fishing, golfing, boating, motoring, etc, and suddenly, it doesn't seem all that extravagant is my point.

A 3-4 day fishing trip can easily be $1000 a person, and that's not deep sea either. That's just lodging, tackle, and boat rental.

Many hobbies are expensive, computers are on the lower end of that scale.

Considering that most come from the US, they can buy expensive computers. The rest fortunate parts of the world? Less likely, in my country most of my friends think my computer is crazy expensive and it's soooooooo last gen. OTOH they earn 4 times less then they would have in the US with the same occupation and everything is 1/4th more expensive to boot. But in mid 2011 it was quite a rig. For me from a US citizen perspective GK110 would be more or less 4000$ so that's why I probably won't buy it despite my desire to ditch multi-gpu until they mature and will get proper support for at least 3-4 years. Right now I play FarCry3 on a single GPU, on 12.11 it crushed in CF on 13.1 it's a stutter fest. Oh, well, I've got bigger problems then "deigning" to play on low settings.

It's true, computers, even with some of the latest and greatest hardware available will only cost 3-5 Grand to build from scratch, and most people aren't building from scratch, they are adding new parts as they go which makes it even more economical.

The downside of course to our hobby is the blazing speed at which our expensive hardware becomes obsolete, and the quick loss of resale value.

Sure high end computers may not be as glitzy as cars, or manly as hunting, but it's cool that the average Joe can have (generally speaking) the 'best of the best' personal computer with just a little bit of saving, if they so choose.

But I'm sure you get 'free' health care. ^_^

Seriously though, how could a video card cost 4k USD ? Or anywhere near that ? Forgive me for being naive, but can't you just have someone from (the US for example) ship it overseas to you ? Or order one from a retailer that ships globally. Where is the massive price increase coming from ?

PC hardware just costs more in Europe, there is VAT in EU countries, basically a sales tax, that varies from country to country. PC hardware gets a big markup in Europe though, I'm sure someone knows the explanation for it. I live in Canada, we have universal healthcare ;), and pay the same for my hardware as you do in the US.

Hardware just costs more in Europe as a whole, but the main additional cost I think he's referring to is VAT. A tax applicable throughout the EU. I live in Canada, we have universal healthcare ;), and pay the same for my hardware as you do in the US.

Ah, thank you. This VAT tax sounds awful. Any way around it ? (legally)

Well if you're a tourist/non-resident you stop at an office at the airport on your way home. Show them your receipts and they give it back to you ;) Only way I know.

I'm pretty sure you brought up the car topic. Remember? When you felt compelled to prove the obvious? That cars cost more than computers. ;)

No, no free health care. If you are employed legally your employer must pay for your health care so you get a lower salary. Hardly free. So in theory I have health care provided whether I want it or not. In practice it's such a low quality healthcare that I have to use private health care so I end up paying twice for it.

I lived in the UK for 15 yrs up until 2002, PC hardware AFAIK didn't have that much of an markup, VAT is only 15%, and you get more $ for your pound anyway.... A $900 Titan will not cost 4k equiv in $ in the UK?, not sure where lepton going with that.
Considering console cost half the price of high end GPUs, I would say PC gaming is an expensive pastime. Especially for teenagers....young adults usually have mortgages and young families, as for hunting?, that's well cheap here...just my 2c

So true man, once healthcare is nationalized, quality is lowered for everybody. So what's the point in the first place ?

But I digress, getting away from the current topic.

Can't wait to get those Titans, anyone else think it's the sweetest gpu name in recent memory ? Fermi sounded like a weird cousins name from Alabama.

Would Hawking or Einstein be presumptuous? At least we wouldn't get comments like the above one there.

I live in Poland, we have 23% VAT tax. Titan will cost 900USD+23%VAT+added mark-up for nv hardware. Right now GTX690 costs about 1300USD in Poland. Even at launch GTX680 was significantly more expensive then 7970 despite lower MSRP. That 4k figure was to put into perspective how many hours we have to work to buy it. It will cost more than an average monthly salary, something on the order of 2 average salaries. I'm pretty sure that an average american don't have to work more than a week or two to buy it.

Hawking though a great scientist(just ignoring his condition for the time being) is not in the same league as Einstein. But if we consider his condition his triumph shows the resolve of human mind and for that he should be a inspiration to us all.My favorite for four gens should be like this

Kepler->Maxwell->Einstein->Newton

The last guy was a giant in every possible way.Enough of science and sorry for being off topic :)
