I know now it's fantasy, but didn't know what to expect before watching it. Not everyone salivated over this series for the past 3 months and knows everything about it :p - Also I don't like dark depressing stuff (go figure) so another reason I won't continue to watch, even though I'm sure it'll be a fine series.

Yea, if you didn't like how dark the first episode was you won't enjoy it.

The books get much worse by killing off a lot of who you expected the main characters are and often times they were the good guys. :(

Newbian, might want to put that in spoilers for those who haven't read the books.

Why?

I never said who and was just informing him that if he didn't like how dark this episode was to not expect it really getting any better.

Plus the previews talk about a lot more so no issues here.

I thought it was decent although it might be hard for someone who didn't read the book to follow it.

It's been awhile since I read the books but I always pictured Khal Drogo to be older.
Did they leave out Rickon Stark?

There are some odd looking people in the cast! Joffrey and Viserys just look like douches!

I'm surprised that none of the non-readers has yet posted an "Ewww!" reaction to the end of the first episode.

Unless they weren't clear by the end that Jaime and Cersei are brother and sister.

Now that you mention Rickon, I don't recall seeing him, but he's not really important at this point in time anyway.

I think Newbian's post was fine as he didn't name any names. You can't assume that any character is safe in this series, which is one of the things I like about it.

Weird, didn't notice he was omitted.

Pretty sure I saw Rickon up on a wall somewhere laughing when Arya made the archery shot and Bran strated chasing her around. Plus they did say there are 5 Stark children, so Rickon is implied at the very least.

I thought the acting and production were amazing all around. I do see how it will be a bit dense plot and characterwise for those unfamiliar with the first book. Critics who have been given the first 6 episodes say the series admirably explains everything but early on it can be confusing.

My peeve for ep 1 is they replaced one of my favorite lines. When Jon finds the 6th direwolf pup in the show Theon said something about the pup being the runt of the litter just like Jon. In the book Theon goes back to kill the runt and the chapter ends with Jon saying "I think not Greyjoy. This one belongs to me." I remember thinking "Yeah!" so was bummed they replaced it.

Curious question - did anyone see any English subtitles for the Dothraki language when they watched? I had none, which surprised me, though I admit the Dothraki didn't say a whole lot in that episode. I'm just trying to figure out if it was an error in my broadcast or if they didn't bother with them in the first episode.

Yep that was Rickon on the wall laughing.
He has almost 0 importance in the books so it's not really a big deal that he wasn't shown a lot.

One of my favs was omitted as well:

Tyrion: "All dwarfs may be bastards in their father's eyes"

...then later...

Tyrion: "Remember this, boy. All dwarfs may be bastards, yet not all bastards need be dwarfs.”

They only did the first part.

Why exactly were the bro and sis banging each other?

Incest keeps the bloodline pure. The other brother and sister (the blond ones) were semi-incestuous as well. Daenerys always thought she would grow up to marry her brother. As for the queen and her brother, they were twins and feel that they are essentially the same soul.

Drogo was around 30 in the book. Seemed right to me.

Yes, in fact Dany's impression of him straight from the book: He was younger than she'd thought, no more than thirty.

Jason Momoa is 31 so he seems to fit right in.

I enjoyed it, but if you didn't read the books, there will be a lot you will miss out on, IMO.

so true, the series lacks depth, if I hadn't read the book it would be playing out as a very generic fantasy at this point. It is only the first episode though.
