EDIT: And here's a video with some of the author's pronunciations.

I've been way off with Targaryen - but he said he didn't care 🙂 To me, they'll always been the tar-GAR-yens! (both tar and yar rhyming with "mar" rather than "mare").

I'm getting pretty excited by this - might have to add HBO to the lineup.

Then again, maybe I'll just wait until the series is complete and watch them all at once, like I'm doing with BSG.

Preview was great. I think Arya stole the show without even speaking. That was a great scene to develop her personality.

Just get the BRs.

they may decide to can it or not depending on their broadcast figures, getting the BRs may be too late.

and i don't want to wait that long.

it'd be cheaper to rent a motel room with free hbo on the nights it's on 🙂

Rome got canceled early, but the BRs are available for that. Up to you, though.

i'm not saying the BRs wouldn't be available for all the episodes that have filmed. i'm concerned that they may make a decision to redlight the next season before BR sales even happen.

Oh hell yeah. Aside from the fake snow, I loved it.

I am very concerned how they will handle helping the audience keep the multitude of characters straight. I've read the books, but it's beenabout 5 years since this one, and I am terrible with names anyway.

Other than that, it looks promising.

Heck I'm "reading" the audiobook and have a hard time keeping things straight.

The show will focus on the central characters (The Starks, Lannisters, and Daenerys) as the book does and the others will be supporting cast (Littlefinger, King Robert, Samwell Tarly, etc). I doubt they'll go into the backstories of the Clegane boys and such.

This is my all time favorite hard fantasy series, and George RR Martin is my all time favorite fantasy author. That being said, Lena Headey is nowhere NEAR how I envisioned Cersei Lannister to be.

This is how I think she would look. (google image)

Lena Headey

Here's one of her actually in costume for this role:

God I hope they didn't rape this story. You'd think it wouldn't be possible, with as much time Martin appears to be involved.

We'll see.

I'm almost always disappointed by the looks of characters of books I've read when they make movies out of them. With the series unfinished I hope I don't read A Dance With Dragons (yeah I'm still hopeful it'll be published soon) and picture the actors in my mind.

All I want to say is:

Never read the series.
HBO-produced mini series are usually very good, so I'll watch this.
The names of characters in fantasy novels and movies are retarded. Seriously retarded.

New trailer: Poison

Even better, the entire 25-minute Making Game of Thrones video is online if you haven't seen it. For non-readers, there's a decent amount of background on the characters which may be helpful, and I didn't notice any substantial spoilers.

The Game of Thrones character names are a lot better than most fantasy books for sure.

If anyone is looking to read the series, you can pick up a boxed set of all 4 available books for ~$22 from Amazon. This is a pretty good deal considering that the paperbacks go for about $11 each individually.

Alright folks, we are only 1 day away from the premiere! I'd like to remind everyone to please use spoiler tags when discussing an episode within 24 hours of its original air date, but I will also encourage people who haven't seen the current episode to avoid this thread, as you never know what will get posted. Also, please always use spoiler tags when talking about events from the books that haven't aired.

In preparation for the premiere, HBO has posted an interactive viewers guide which has a map and guide to all the houses/characters. You have to zoom in twice on the map before the interactive locations show up.

Winter is coming!

Pssh, spoiler tags are something that is a waste of forum space.

If people don't want to read about what happened in the episode don't visit the last few pages / thread when the episode has aired.

I can tell you right now that snapes kills dumbledore!! 😛

Just finished the first book. I wonder how everyday viewers will react to Martin's, um, non-formulaic storytelling. This is not your "valiant knight defeats the evil sorcerer and rescues the princess" story.

Everything is grey in this world. Where there are clearly "bad guys" it's not as cut and dry as Lord of the Rings, etc. Some things don't get resolved as you would expect in a traditional story and huge story-changing events seems to happen very matter-of-factly, without a giant climax.
