Name one even remotely important character that was killed in the books, but not in the series or vice versa?

Other than changing Robb's wife so much and eliminating some minor characters and side stories to streamline things, the series is remarkably true to the books. All the big events are the same.

They significantly changed Ramsay Snow, or, at least, they haven't revealed what actually happened at Winterfell. There is a chance, a few people are alive that would otherwise be dead (Reek and whoever Ramsay married and starved). Not exactly major though.

hm.. I read some of the GoT wiki but have never come acrossed anything mentioning purple wedding. so i'll be pleasantly surprised when it shows up

FYI: Purple wedding is a fan made name. The name Red Wedding was actually used in the book. .

😕

How could I? I thought I made it pretty clear in that post--or the other one--that I have not read the books and absolutely never will.

I'm only repeating what came out of the mouth of GRR Martin at that interview panel that came with the Target set. :\

So, I'm guessing scripts that have not yet been televised. Don't crucify me--the fat man told me that. 😀

I still disagree with Gag's placement of the Purple Wedding.
While, it is important, it really only serves to set up what happens after and that should be what the series focuses on.

Joffrey's wedding is going to be in episode two this season. George RR Martin is the one who wrote the episode, The Lion and the Rose.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but to me, this trailer was WAY better than the first two. I was excited for the new season before, but this one actually gave me goosebumps.

I haven't read the books (I'm about 2/3 through the 2nd, but I've been there for 5-6 months...), so I have no idea what happens. GoT is the first show that has rendered me truly speechless ... as in actually being incapable of formulating words. I can't wait for next season.

Having just finished watching season 3, I'm considering buying the books. Is there someone who first watched the show, and then went to buy the books? Did you find it worth it?

I'm not normally into fantasy literature, LOTR world is probably the only one I really like, but I'm digging GOT. There are a few storylines I find boring/annoying (e.g. the red chick and Daenerys), some parts are too 'fantasy' for my taste, and although I liked at first how good guys die too, after the Red Wedding, I feel GRR Martin is a bit overdoing it, practically only the good guys have been dying so far.
But I still find it interesting, I'm a bit worried that knowing the big events, at least in the first 2.5 books, I'll find it boring. I'm also worried I might ruin the show by reading ahead.
The books are pretty cheap - $30 at Amazon for all 5...

I would save your money.

I think the whole point of the series is to make you realize that there are no good guys. Only those who are willing to do what it takes to survive and the dead.

I started reading the books after the third season. I found that the first three books are awesome and stand on their own. Also very glad that I got to read what will happen in season four before the show comes out.

The book gives a different feeling to the severity of the events and the importance of certain characters. Yes, the red wedding was a big event in the book, but somehow it wasn't as impactful as the show. Rob was just another character and not as central to the plot. However, book four was a chore to read and the series just never got that much better IMO. The second half of book three was the highlight for me.

I'd agree with this. I've read the first and about 2/3 of the 2nd book after the seasons had already aired, and there's really nothing important that the show missed. They do such a great job with the show, it's not one of those where you think "man, the source material is SO much better, I should go read the books..."

I'd give vital organs for these 3:

Jaime was sparring with Bron. Maybe they're substituting in Bron for Ilyn Payne during Jaime's swordsmanship rehab/retraining to have some witty back and forth banter.

I have a fear that little moves like that -- Gendry for Edric Storm, Bron for Ilyn Payne, etc... -- implies that those characters (Gendry and Bron) will have no further future involvement in the books.

I started the books soon after season two wrapped up. Totally worth it. Even now, post-show-Red-Wedding, there's lots to look forward to. I don't find that reading the books ruins the show, but generally makes it more enjoyable; though certainly there aren't any big surprises. Frankly, you're so invested in the characters in the book, those shocking events seem far more...shocking.

Watching people's youtube reactions to the show's Red Wedding is entertaining. But when I got through that chapter in the books, I had to take a break from reading and console myself with drink.

I don't think the books are SO much better, because the show is so well done. However, imo, the books really provide a whole lot of nuance and history and context and character that is lacking in the show.

I completely disagree. While the show is doing an incredible job of keeping to the books storyline and of covering all the important points they're still forced to leave out a lot of the meat of the various subplots. The books are so detailed and the TV seasons so short on time that the series doesn't really come close to capturing all the subtext and foreshadowing and little conversations that have huge importance down the road. Any fan of the series should read the books too.

😀

when I saw that for the first time, only 2 or so weeks ago, I literally jumped off my couch and had to restrain myself from shoving my plasma onto the floor.

Ilyn Payne won't be in the show anymore AFAIK. The actor, Wilco Johnson, has pancreatic cancer and elected to not receive chemo. Unless they recast they will need to rewrite a bit of the story. I don't think it will change too much, but Jaime's interaction with Ilyn was pretty amusing.

I plan on reading them. My girlfriend has read up to 4 before watching the show so I already have them at my disposal.

I think Bronn will replace Ilyn Payne. They'll have to rewrite a few jokes.

What Bronn does in the books from this point on is easily cut. They had already cut out the Stokeworths.

I watched the first season then read the first book just in case the show missed anything. It was pretty much identical to the show, with small details missing/different. As the show goes on the more little things that change from the book to the show. I suspect by the end there will be quite a few differences. Still I love both the show and the books. I would recommend both if you have the time. I also understand from a cost/logistics point of view there is no way to make the show identical to the books.

I watched season 1 before picking up the books. The first book is almost identical to the show. After that it starts diverging. I think you're at an interesting spot because as we head towards the content of book 4 most people will probably advise you to skip the books. Truth is that book 4 kinda sucks. You just have to get through it. He wrote book 4 and 5 as one giant book and apologizes for it in the books. They had to make a decision on how to divide up that giant book and opted to do it by character rather than chronologically. This creates an odd book if there ever was one. Books 1-3 are great and I enjoyed book 5 although it took a while to get into after the chore of reading book 4. I'm definitely looking forward to book 6.

The books have more characters and they go into more depth. People want to use the red wedding as an example where the show is better but I think most people should recognize that they went way overboard with that scene. To me that was a publicity stunt. The changes to that scene were completely unnecessary to the story and mostly contributed to youtube hype.

The books, besides book 4, have a more even feel to them. There are no crazy publicity stunts being pulled. The basic gist is that anyone can die at any time. It will be interesting to see how the show deals with
the purple wedding
. I'm personally hoping they do not go all nuts like they did with the red wedding but at the same time I thought it was really fun. Watching people's reactions was priceless. Even my girlfriend was super pissed and swore she wasn't going to keep watching the show. We all know she will though.

In my opinion you should read the books. I think there's going to be a total of 7 if he doesn't die first.
