Update: I scanned and sent the ad to blahblah, but i guess he hasn't posted it yet.

BUT, I went back today and I saw the manager with an email in her hand that basically states: "there is a misprint in the ad, fix this asap" I saw a guy buying the combo and she charged him $169.

So if you go, bring the ad and try different sales reps, avoid the African-American female manager, she's the one who was sticking to the $169 price, and from previous dealings, she's not a very nice lady.

Alrite people, here is the scope on this deal: As of Monday, 4:30pm, the Fry's at Manhatten Beach, CA is still honoring the deal. If you have the newspaper "Beach Reporter" without the black-out'd price then you will have a better chance of getting the deal. If you don't have the ad, you may still get on the deal if you ask them nicely and show the the receipt that paulee scanned. A scan of the reciept is located here..
The actual ad is here.

has anyone gotten this deal from a store outside the beach cities area? i've tried to get the combo with just the inventory number and, even though it rang up as $129, the sales rep adjusted the price to $169 and would hear none of what i had to say about the lower advertised price. if others have been successful, i may go back and try with the printed ad.

thanks for posting the ad, guys!

Good luck to all that get in on this, it's a great price. And if anyone could go through the trouble of picking up an extra one and shipping out to me, I'd be eternally grateful :D

Ok...here's my story! I got off work and headed directly toward the Manhattan Beach Fry's...got there around 4:15. Surprisingly this Fry's has a lot less people, but anyways....I asked for the combo and salesman had to ask one of his coworkers what the PLU # was...since I didn't have the ad. The african american lady manager showed me the email and it basically says that it is a price mistake from the Beach Reporter and the actual price is $169. Undaunted by this, I just hung around and looked and waited till she left then I hurriedly rushed over to another salesman...still noone in line (WOW). And YESSSSS!!!!! I got the combo...WOOOHOOOO!!!!! Rushed out and then drove directly to UCLA since they were holding the MS .NET Launch and there were a billion people there (looked like CHINA). Waited by myself quietly got through the door where they were giving out the bags of goodies. Got the bag with Windows XP Professional Full Version and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Academic Version then I ate some of the food that was there. Then LEFT!!!

Needless to say...I'm Happy :)

I think the best place to get the Beach Reporters that have not been blacked out are the liquor stores right by the beach. These papers are usually everywhere. Don't be daunted by some of the Frys people hassling you on the deal. Frys is unorganized big time and they certainly don't communicate. The ad is NOT a misprint. Frys gave the price to the Beach Reporter and they printed it. Frys has this price in their computer and they have sold this combo to a ton of people. I don't know how many they have left, but I think it is worth a shot on Tuesaday if you are local.

Are you sure they have them at the liquor stores by the beach? or is this just speculation? I don't want to be rude, but I just want to make sure so I can decide if the trip's worth it.

Ok, I don't know EXACTLY which stores have the Beach Reporter, so I guess it is speculation. I will tell you that I have lived in and near the beach cities all my life and I have seen that paper everywhere. I looked at the copy I have and noticed they have a website. Beach Reporter. You can probably go to their office and get a copy directly if you have to. They are at 400 S. Sepulveda Blvd, suite 247, Manhattan Beach, CA. 90266, Phone 310-372-0388, Fax 310-372-6113. I could not find the ad on the website. I guess you could call them and ask exactly where or how you can get a copy.

I got in on this deal too, although it took some paitience and perseverance. Just keep trying different reps till one of them gives it to you.

:disgust: You know I have heard "some people" badmouth Fry's on these threads, but as I read the fine print at the bottom of the Fry's add in the Beach Reporter it plainly says, "Not Responsible for Typographical Errors", so they do not have to sell it to us at this price. It just must be out of the kindness of their hearts, :) or, or one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. :confused: {stops talking thinks about it a bit then gets off soapbox}
ya got ta love it, If you don't take it back. Don't ask any technical questions of the workers, ask other customers they are usually better teckwise. And another thing {gets back on soapbox} :| leave my little buddy vectorz alone, he saved me money, he didn't realise what a feeding frenzy he would start. And seems like he didn't understand the voodoo marketing of Fry's, or as our fearless leader would say fuzzy math. I took my combo back this morning and got this deal and money back, :cool: and still get to take back a power unit cause this board can cruize with my old 250 watter. I was thinking of going with the 1 gig duron combo. come back anytime vectorz. :D
Oh ya, and you in the peanut gallery NoCal. I am using your water and their isn't a damm thing you can do about it. Think I might order cablemodem to see how it works with my AMD 1700+. their is a special for $40 a month.;)

djb - What are you smoking? Are you ok man, maybe you shouldn't stay up so late? I tried to make sense of you're post, but I just gave up. I'm still not sure what combo you bought or didn't buy, oh never mind.

Anyway I have never totally agreed with that typographical error disclaimer stuff. Some companies use that excuse way too much. Frys has this price in their computer. They have kept it at this price since the day the sale started. I don't think this was a simple mistake, I think Frys just changed their mind due to a lack of internal communication. The typesetter and the Beach Reporter did not print the wrong price, now that would be an actual typographical error. Frys also did not make a mistake when they gave them the price, it is the exact price they have in their computer. Frys has not changed the price in their system because I don't think they know how. I am hoping Frys is stormed on Tuesday with people wanting to buy this on the last day. I like the products and prices at Frys, but they are a horrible company. You can read all about their business practices all over the web. I am glad I know my computer stuff. I never talk to Frys employees unless absolutely necessary.

Now did I read your post right? You are going to run this combo on a 250 watt PS? Well I wish you the best...

Just havin a little fun. I bought their Soyo Dragon Ultra P4 1.6 combo (not Northwood), last week for $230, after having to buy a new PS $44 and memory $60, it got a bit pricy, so I was going to exchange it for their Duron 1 Gig combo (forgot which motherboard) for $90. And wouldn't need new memory or probably PS. Untill I did a search for fry's on this forum Sunday and found this thread I didn't know the Beach reporter had Fry's adds. So jumped on this deal, and it has been running fine sense last night on my 2 year 3 month old PS.
And for some reason people in Northern California hate to share their water. Political fights have been going on for decades over water in CA.

gonna head to the fountain valley store tonight. hope they have these in stock. otherwise just get a ticket written up and grab it later. guess I could try the anaheim store too. luckily someone at work leaves near manhattan beach and was able to pick up a copy of the beach reporter for me. no black marker too!

<ANECDOTE>
don't ask technical questions at the parts department. I was there a few weeks ago with my brother to get the AMD XP1800+ Boxed/Iwill XP333-R Boxed combo and he asked the parts guy (just for kicks) what speed the AMD 1800+ runs at. "it runs at 1.8GHz." my brother wanted to make sure the parts guy understood the question, so he asked again "I know it's called an 1800, but what speed does it actually run at?" we all know what the answer is here at AT, right, folks? unfortunately the guy at the parts counter flunked. what a surprise. we had a laugh as we walked away.

<ANECDOTE2>
after we got our ticket printed out for the combo, we went to the cashiers, <sarcasm on> and to our surprise <sarcasm off>, all the XP1800+ boxed CPU's were returns. every single one had a fry's return sticker on them. we took our chances and took the opened cpu boxes and just waited for them to restock a couple of weeks later to exchange for new unopened cpus (they now come in those plastic cases). damn fry's and their returned items. and they have the nerve to charge full price on these used items. when they opened the new city of industry store, I wondered how much of their inventory was opened/returned stuff transferred from the other stores to balance the load. :p

<< has anyone gotten this deal from a store outside the beach cities area? q]

as i said earlier, they wouldve give me the $129 price at manhattan beach, but they did at city of industry. my friend and i each got one there with no problems, the manager told the associate helping us that it was in print and they had to honor it. he approved the price adjustment and we were on our way out with our combos. i dont know what all places have the beach reporter, but i know the liquor store by my house has lots. its ruby liquor on the corner of ruby and pch in redondo beach. if im not mistaken in expires today.

If anyone is looking for a beach reporter near the manhattan beach frys, there were about 10 outside the Main Street cafe in downtown El Segundo yesterday.
They are under a bench by the front door.

To get there from Frys:
head north on sepulveda about 1 mile
left on Grand
right on Main
It is a small white??? building on the corner of Main and Pine I believe.

I did. I ended up driving to the Beach Reporter's office (about a mile south of Fry's on Sepulveda) to get my copy and got my combo.

I am glad to here that you guys pulled off this combo on the last day. I knew there were Beach Reporters out there. The Ironic thing is that I had stopped looking at the Beach Reporter Frys ads for awhile because there were never any deals. I am changing my attitude on that. Frys is so retarded that I bet they mess up again.
