socrilles - You need to mellow out dude. Nobody critisized vectorz until he flipped out. Read the posts, people were just asking questions. Can't we all just get along. Let's just stick to the deal at hand.

I'm surprised more people haven't commented on this deal. It seems similiar to the TCWO combo and that got a lot of attention. My preliminary research shows some good reviews of the motherboard, but my volcano 7 HSF won't fit. Frys is recommending that HSF to people, but they're going to get a lot of returns. I've been reading the TCWO combo thread for some ideas. That deal included a coolermaster and people are saying it doesn't cut it.

socrilles...and vectorz....both of you in time out.

dont come out till you are ready to play nice with all the good boyz and girls.

Anyone in the area kind enough to pick up a combo and ship out for me? I could really use this, would be more than willing to reimburse for your time and trouble.

my car gets close to 30 mpg so that would cost me roughly 3$ round trip ..... i guess i would drive 30 miles everytime i can save 30$
oh ... i drive 34 miles to work everyday anyway.!

First, thanks to vectorz and TechDreamer for pointing out and providing detailed information on this deal. I stopped by the Fry's store at Manhattan Beach this morning, and grabbed a copy of the Beach Reporter right next to the exit. While the CSR was typing my order in the computer, a guy looked like a supervisor dropped by and told the CSR that the XP1700 combo was $169, not $129, and asked him to raise the price on each order. I immediately showed the guy my copy of the ad which indicated $129. He disappeared for a few minutes and returned, telling the CSR that only people with the Beach Reporter ad could get the $129 price.

Apparently, Fry's screwed up its ad in the Beach Reporter, which was published earlier than the LA Times ad, and somehow the Manhattan Beach store input $129 for this combo deal (#3257971). I think everyone ordering this combo before this morning got it at $129 before tax.

Now that Fry's has caught up with their mistake, you can still get it at $129 only if you bring the Beach Reporter ad with you to that particular store. The kicker is that you can grab a copy of the Beach Reporter near the exit, right next to the candy machines. Since the ad said it was good until next Tuesday, for those who live in the Southern California area, you could decide whether it's worthwhile to save $40 plus tax to drive to the Manhattan Beach store. One more reminder, you should try to avoid parking in the Fry's lot, there's another lot right next to it on Rosecrans Ave or try the parking lot in the mall.

I got my combo at the Manhattan Beach, CA store. I was the third person to get this combo. I also bought a Volcano 7 HSF, but now I am reading here that it does not fit. Is it too wide? Or too high (i.e. getting in the way of your IDE cables?). It looks like I can get a Volcano 5 (AMD approved for XP 1700) on ebay for about $11 shipped, would this be a good HSF?

BTW, I overheard that conversation with the manager wanting to charge $169, this was probably around 9:20am today. Funny how I come home and see a conversation which I heard at Frys posted on the web a couple of hours later!

Can a nice Anandtech-er please purchase this combo for me? I'll pay u for your time and trouble. PM me, plz!

Dude you can get a Volcano 5 at Fry's for $9.99. It goes on sale constantly for $5.99. Great sink. Chop off the 60mm and tie wrap on a 80mm. Quiet and cool.

Well, I just got back from getting on this amazing deal me and a friend both got it for $129 we had to show then the ad but it was no problem they didn't give us a hassle. Just make sure you pick up the paper from the entrance of the store. Good luck and thanks.🙂

My local Fry's told me I have to bring in the ad for them to honor the $129 or else it's $169. Can any scan the ad and save me 30 minutes drive.

I curse southern california for it's availability of cable modems as well as for other reasons, and this just adds to the list 😉

Called around to local N. cal stores and like dealmaker said, up here it's $229 🙁
