Where the hell is Warsow? It's an awesome free game, based on Quake 3 CPMA movement and more stuff. No link because their site is gone somehow..

Master of Orion

Some of you may remember this from the DOS days, in fact you need DOSBox (or something like it) to run it, but it's at least decent for a turn based strategy game. All you need to know to set it up and run it is in its discussion, specifically at the top of page 4

Edit: fixed link

Quake II is free. There are a few communities that still harbor a competitive atmosphere for the game, but the largest one is at www.tastyspleen.net. This is a good place to meet tons of players that still play, as well as find servers to play on.

Edit- For the full game, you first need to download the demo (v3.14), then download the patch (v3.20) and upgrade it. I believe they are hosted through fileplanet, so you might have to make an account (it's free) in order to download it. The bare minimum link is an ftp site, so you don't need an account; just download the .rar file.

Here's a link to the demo: Q2 Demo (v3.14)

Here's a link to the patch: Patch to v3.20

This patch contains the regular game with online player capability including capture the flag.

Edit - Here's a link to a 16mb version (the bare minimum -- doesn't include capture the flag, but you can play tourney, team deathmatch, etc): Q2 Bare Min.

Have fun.

I just played through HURRICAN. It's a full fledged inofficial sequel to the legendary TURRICAN games on the Amiga.
It was made over the course of 5 years by 2 (!) people. Whole new engine with DirectX FX, smooth paralax scrolling, lot's of smoke and particle effects. Very nice weapons, very good gamepad support.
Everything feels right and professional about the game. The endbosses are especially cool.
And the best thing: 2 player coop on 1 screen!

Check it out:

I encountered zero bugs or crashes with XP. Newest game version is 1.0.0.4, download is 40MB

Freespace is free!! WOW..I paid about 35 for it years ago..well spent IMO. That series is one of the best space shooters I've ever played. I really wish someone would pick it up again.

asogames

Xplorers is an online version of settlers of catan. The graphics suck but It's extremely addictive. I prefer to play against bots because it's faster and I can take bathroom breaks without worrying about having people wait for me.

is this pc games only? If anyone is into classic gaming emulation I know a great place but I wont post anything until i get an ok here. in the meantime if anyone wants mor info just email/pm me

Great list.
re Starsiege Tribes 1 FPS, Sierra has shut off the master server. However, the community has created their own. For those who never played, it's a classic.
This download is preconfigured with all available patches and it is setup to start with the Paintball Mod. It can be configured for any of the mods and includes the working Master Server.
Edited to add, I tested it with Vista for those curious. It worked well using the included VistaLH1.30Tribes.exe created by a community member.
