I don't know if this can go here since its actually just a browser game, but its tons of fun and free. Don't worry about the current whining going on in the forums, new management has come in and they had some minor delays while transferring everything to new servers and re-working the account management system.

I know a lot of people have probably formed their own idea about this game as soon as I said "browser game" but its really not like all those canned adventure games where you get a single guy and click a button every couple hours to tell him to go out and fight something then wait a couple more hours. It's been around for 10 years now, the mechanics are very in-depth and there is a lot of strategy and interaction involved especially on the kingdom level. Check out the guide and join a kingdom, jump around to a couple different ones until you find a good or decent one as the game is infinitely more enjoyable when you are in an active kingdom.

Anyways here it is:

P.S. Also, this isn't one of those browser games where you can only actually compete if you spend real money. Currently the only thing you can spend money on in this game is a 1 time $20 charge to not have advertisements in the game (and the ad's really aren't intrusive anyways, I barely even notice them anymore).

Thank to this thread, I've checked out Combat Arms and love it! It's very fast paced and easy to pick up. Plus, there are a lot of different styles of play depending on which weapons you "acquire." And best of all is that it's totally free!

I've been playing this free online webgame, it's a parody on anime and other pop references, it's a good pass time for those bored at work or it can be something you could focus on for improving your character, it has months worth of content and is always expanding, has a great community. Check it out if those things interest you.

For Ground Control, can you play multiplayer at all? Would it be possible to setup a LAN game through Hamachi? I saw on the wiki the in-game multiplayer is no longer supported.

League of Legends. www.leagueoflegends.com

It's a cartoon dota style team pvp game. There's a huge thread on it. Too bad the first page won't be updated.

While it can be fully played and enjoyed 100% for free, the game does rely on a microtransaction model, but purchasing / spending IRL $$ is not a direct advantage.

[*]Spring (Windows, Linux | Multiplayer | Wikipedia) - 3D clone of commercial Total Annihilation.

thats inaccurate.
Spring is a FOSS game engine used in 13 RTS games, 4 FOSS and 9 proprietary. Some of the proprietary games are actually free to download and play and can be acquired through the spring website.
the 3d clone of total annihilation is just one of the games on the spring engine...
