It's been like that for years. The terms are the same as in past years - must return modem if cancelling within 12 months, or an equipment fee ($99?) will be charged. The service itself is month-to-month.

Hi,
Had to call Verizon today on some billing matters, and after all of about 1 min to get that straight,

I asked about the increased Download speed and if it was going to still happen in the middle of July.

Was informed by the csr that it's in the testing stage right now, they have given it to some of their employees to beta test it, right now,in some areas and it's in the works.

I Offered to be a beta tester for this, but, they said Thanks, But, No Thanks.......:disgust:

But, who knows, maybe, next month ????????

Had enough of Verizon's shenanigans. I only tried once like a month ago but I called up and they told me that because I was a long-standing customer with a grandfathered plan, they would neither raise my speeds nor decrease my bill.

Now I'm paying $65/month(flat, no tax) for VoIP and DSL for which I'm getting 7mbit/850kbit speeds(should be doing 964kbit but hey). I don't mind paying for newsgroups either at those speeds. Verizon just lost a few customers as I'm getting my friends and work to switch over also.

I also asked about download speed increases and they said that it isn't available at the moment but if I saw any ads touting that download speed for new customers that I could call back and order it if my line supports it. They said they expect the download to increase to keep up with what cable is offering in my area. (central coast, ca)

Its on case by case basis. I got the $29.95 rate when I just called in. They said it was only for new customers, but since I had been with them since the beginning (when it was Bell Atlantic and service went down every few days for no reason) I got the rate.

My new ISP is Phonom. To be on the safe side they provision people for 4mbit/964kbit. I'm not sure where they service but they're based out of Richmond, VA and in reality is like a splinter company of Cavalier Telco.

There is more information on them at broadbandreports.com if you search the forum. Even I participated a little bit with my two cents. Good luck on getting Phonom! I'm enjoying these new speeds like a fiend.

Nice. Thanks for the headsup LordThing.
I called yesterday afternoon.
Remember to use "DSL billing" when talking to the stoopid robot telephone system or you'll end up lost in a twisty maze of voice prompts, all different. The nice (human) lady I spoke to said "up to 48 hours" which I assume was a joke, but amazingly enough, I think it's already been done. WSFTP tells me I'm getting up to 300kbit upload - I'll check with a proper speed tester tool shortly.

Just in case any verizon home dsl users out there haven't figured out how to run a web site from a home server: since port 80 is blocked for outbound on home dsl, the way to get around it is to have a dns entry aliased to www.[yoursitename] which points to [yoursitename]:8080 and make apache listen on port 8080. Any web browser looking for www.[yoursite] is automagically redirected to the port 8080 real website which isn't (yet) blocked... Works for me.

WSFTP lies. Proper speed testing shows I'm maxing out at about 128kbps. Thought that was too fast for verizon.

Port 80 inbound is now blocked for residential verizon DSL subscribers? I had VOL DSL last year, didn't notice that. Sad to see so much port-blocking going on. Btw, you can not alias a different port to domain name, that's simply not possible. You can certainly change what port your HTTP server listens to (which is why it's so pointless for an ISP to block particular ports - the end result of that sort of cat-and-mouse port-blocking game, will result in all ports blocked, at which point it is pointless to remain a subscriber), but the difficultly lies in having people know what port to use. There are certain URL-forwarding services that you can use (I assume that you actually meant that, and not DNS), but it's still a hassle, especially for allowing people to deep-link to your site.

I spoke to a CSR on 7/14 about increasing d/l speed. I'm in MA and she said that my line qualifies for an increase to 1.5M. This irritated me a little because I was supposed to be getting 1.5M from the beginning, when I signed up about a year ago. She said I was listed as being on a 768 plan now, though I cap out at about 580. She said it would go through in 24 hours, and when I got home I had an e-mail stating that the speed increase would be effective after 6:00 p.m. on 7/15. It is now 7/19 and there is no increase whatsoever. I'm not even at 768, which makes me wonder if they did anything or it is a problem on my end.

I also asked about the alleged upgrade to 3M. She said it was still being tested in MA and bugs were being worked out.

There's something going on in the Seattle/Greater Metro area. Past couple weeks stuff has been acting wierd, with occasional disconnects and slow downs. Call the tech line and the automated system says they're aware of probs.

So they must be tweaking with something. Let's hope they get us up to 3mb soon!

okay so I call verizon on june 8th and request the upgrade and I qualify YAY!
the csr is so nice she even changes the rate to the 29.99 and gives me a 50 dollar credit because it was supposed to have been that way for 10 months appearantly. SWEEET.
so I go on vacation june 10th. get back the 23rd. and try to connect to see if I have the upgrade and LO AND BEHOLD the friggin internet wont connect. I call verizon and report the problem, I get the run around about power cycling the modem and checking my internet properties. no luck.
while i am fiddling with it I find that I can connect yahoo messenger but cannot connect to a website. WIERD????? inform tech support of this and they have no idea so they submit a problem escalation to the next level.
they tell me I will have it fixed within 48 hours. get a call yesterday morning saying it is fixed. I try to connect and still nothing. call tech support back and tell them it isnt working. go thru the power cycle property check again.....
so I tell tech support I can connect to messenger but not to websites. this CSR tells me that it isnt anything on their end it has to be my computer. I tell him I have 3 different computers all doing the same thing. he tells me it is my end and cant help me and will be closing the case. Well I tell him that it worked before the upgrade, and he insists he cant help and is closing the case, I get PI$$ed by this time and tell him I want to talk to a supervisor, get put on hold for 20 minutes. then the supervisor gets on,
I give him the story and he says OH YEAH there have been problems with people upgrading something about the programmer forgetting to change some setting or something and he tells the tech support guy to resubmit the escalation with a note saying I had the speed upgrade.
I get put back on hold again for 20 minutes while this MORON types this up, then gets back on the phone to say....... thank you for calling verizon have a nice day! Talk about way pissed by this time what a Jerkweed. well 2 hours go by then tech support calls and tells me it is fixed and guess what IT IS. what a hassle. but I am loving the new speed. I was on 768/128 so it was a major boost.

I went through the EXACT same crap with them. HOWEVER, you got much more of a run around than I did. I called, they gave me the "power cycle" shpeal, and said that they would have it fixed in 24 to 48 hours. I waited a day, knowing full well, that it was something that could be fixed without having to wait, and knowing it was something with the upgrade. I called, got some idiot who tried to get me to power cycle again. I told him that I have been an IT manager for 8 years, its not my computers, its not the line to the house, its something they did in the upgrade, he still insisted that I power cycle crap. I told him to get his manager on the phone, which amazingly enough, he did. The manager played ignorant, and transferred me to the repair techs. (I figured I was getting somewhere, because I was on hold for over 40 minutes, and it kept saying 11 minutes). The gal who got on the phone was extremely nice. she asked me to refresh, and still nothing. She said "OK" I heard typing for less than 10 seconds, and she said "Ok, try again" at which point, everything worked. Tear 1 and 2 support with Verizon blows goat.

Hmm, I'm an existing Verizon customer and I just tried signing up for Verizon Online DSL on the web but the 1.5Mbps/384Kbps option doesn't show up for me. Is this regional, an automatic upgrade after I sign up, or do new subscribers also have to call the 800 number for Verizon Online DSL Billing? How do I find out my distance from the CO? Thanks!

i am a verizon dsl subscriber and my service is currently at 1.5/128. Im going to ask for the upload increase, hopefully it will be a quick and ez, painless process. I remember back in march when i requested the dl speed increase (768 to 1.5) it was quick, everything was done in about 3 days. No hassle, just called up and bam three days later my service was going faster than ever.

Latest in my saga:

I am still waiting since 7/14 for my downstream increase from 768K to 1.5M. They claimed it would be done 7/15 after 6:00 p.m. but no go. I called up, and after dealing with Verizon's INCREADIBLY IRRITATING automated system, I spoke to tech support. The guy I spoke to claimed that it was still pending and it looked like my connection might be over the 15,000 foot limit for 1.5M. Customer service said it was 14,200 (DSLReports indicated 13,100 feet), but the tech guy said that those are only rough estimates. Now my two subsidiary e-mail accounts aren't working.

Also, the customer service rep. was a real a@@hole, claiming that the $29.95 rate was only for those with Verizon package deals. She also rambled on and on, claiming that she had to answer questions completely, regardless of what I actually asked her. And if I hear "power-cycle your modem" again, I'm going to crack. I do it five times a day, voluntarily or not.
