I called on friday, and I am still to far from the CO. I had my price at $29.95 for over a year, but i had it as a packaged promo with my phone service back then. So I asked to get the price separate from my phoneline deal.

As she is doing this, she mentions that it allowed her to checkmark the feature to get 1.5/384 speeds, but she couldnt guarentee this since i am to far to qualify for it technically. But she says if it does, it will start at the end of the day August 1st. So I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I just called, but they told me that the faster upload speed was not available in my area yet. :(

They told me I was getting 1.5 down already, which I don't believe. The speed test at dslreports showed 680, and the one at Verizon's site showed 691, so I assume I'm getting 768/128. I'm thinking it might be because I have the older Fujitsu RA14 modem. Anyone know what the max speed is that this modem can handle?

Verizon is not particularly honest about their speeds to begin with. I was supposed to have 1.5M when I signed up last year, but a billing rep. told me last week that it didn't even exist in my area last year. Someone lied and it doesn't really matter who.

Verizon claims that my speed increase went through. They could have fooled me because my speed didn't change at all, though two of my e-mail accounts have been deactivated in the process of giving me this vapor speed increase. Billing and tech sent me back and forth today like a ping-pong ball. It's still not right tonight. I understand why people are going to local (or local-ish) cable providers.

Sorry to bump this thread but I had a question from others that have ordered.

I recently had DSL service ordered here in MA. Now, according to an advert printed on the regular land-line phone bill, this number is "pre-qualified" for 1.5Mbit/s DSL service. So, since offer for $29.99/mo with first month free on Verizon's web site shows expiry is end of July, pulled the trigger on installation. Now, I had DSL at a different location a year ago or so, and when it was ordered, they sent a self-install kit, and gave an estimated service-ready date at the end of the signup process.

This time, the signup process was done using Firefox, and I don't recall seeing a service-ready date estimation. Nor has an e-mail been sent to confirm. (Is ATT Worldnet dialup service blocking Verizon auto-generated e-mails, possibly due to a spam-blocker? I think that's a possibiliy unfortunately.)

Anyway, checking http://www.verizon.com/dslorderstatus for this number, shows some strange things.

DSL Details
Service Type: Verizon Online DSL
DSL Phone Number: XXX-XXX-XXXX
Installation Type: Technician Installation <-- WTF??? Am I going to be charged for this???

Status Action Date Details
Receive DSL Order July 25, 2004
Scheduled DSL Service Ready Date Revised Date:
To Be Determined <-- "Revised date"??? Again, WTF?
Ship Installation Kit July 26, 2004
Activate DSL Service Pending

I don't understand why the "revised date" and "technician install". This is supposed to be a regular, "pre-qualified", "self-install kit" installation. Has this happened to anyone else that ordered, that didn't already have DSL?

Worse yet, clicking on "view details" on the first item, shows this:
Order Date: July 25, 2004
Service Type: Verizon Online DSL
Maximum Connection Speed: up to 768K/128K
Scheduled Service Ready Date: August 2, 2004 after 6 pm

"Up to 768K"? What happened to "pre-qualified" for 1.5Mbit service?

If this is only going to be 768Kbit service, I'm cancelling immediately, perhaps after "testing" the service for a short period during the first free month. For that slow a speed, I'll stick with dialup. That's not even really "broadband", IMO. :(

PS. Has anyone succeeded in getting "naked" DSL in MA? I heard a few months ago that they were making it available in this state. The plan is eventually to drop the land-line and stick with just 1.5Mbit DSL service for ~$30/mo, and use a free VOIP service. (Skype?) All of my friends are already on broadband and using VOIP.

I wouldn't worry about the 768/128k thing, I think you will get the 1.5. The reason I think this is because when I went to the verizon website to order my dsl it said the same thing so I called up their customer service people. They said the line was qualified for 1.5/386 and that is what I would be getting. Just call up verizon and see if you can get that technician install thing changed.

More "interesting stuff", check out this thread for my rant.

Was anyone else misled into signing up for Verizon DSL with a manditory one-year contract with an early-termination fee? I thought that VOL DSL was month-to-month? The online signup mentioned $29.99 a month, and nothing (that I saw) about a minimum contract length.

Is everyone else posting to this thread, that has VOL, on a forced contract? I had DSL at some period last year, and it wasn't on a contract, so I'm quite surprised at this change. Quite angry too, I feel very misled.

I'm trying to stay calm at this point, and avoiding calling up a VOL rep and ripping them a new one, even though I really, really, want to.

When I signed up in Oct 2001 and to this day, I didnt know there was a contract other than the "modem". If I canceled in less than a year then I knew I had to return the modem. Thats all i know. Other than that I have no idea.

When I signed up last month they told me it was month-to-month.

Shrug.

When I spoke to them about upload speed increase last month, I asked about contracts because when I signed up initially it was under a contract but they told me it was month to month now. Maybe they dont consider the 9 month tthing to be a "contract."

Well, I did some more research, and there are three seperate pages (so far) that I've found on their site to sign up for residential DSL service through VOL. None of them mention up-front a contract commitment, but one of them does explicitly say "no annual commitment". The fine print below is the same for all three pages, and only mentions the requirement of returning the modem if within the first 12 months of service, otherwise you own them a $100 equipment fee. (Fine by me, really.)

And when I had (my roommate, actually, not myself) sign up for DSL last year (different location than I am at now), right around after when VOL DSL went from 768K to 1.5M down, there was no contract, and the discussions that I read at the time said that VOL was switching off of contracts to M2M instead.
So I was quite surprised to see a 1-year (well, 9-month) minimum contract mentioned in the TOS, with a penalty for early termination. The price shown on the order page was per-month, with no indication of a yearly contract that I could see.

So far, between here and DSLR, it seems to be running about even between people mentioning that they knew about a contract, and people that claim to be M2M.

Regardless, yes, they do offer the "first month free", which I assume means that I can cancel during that month without penalty. But if I start to use the service, theoretically, I am agreeing to the TOS, so I might actually be agreeing to something that I actually didn't agree to by signing up in the first place. So it's a wierd sort of catch-22, if I do want DSL. I'm going to do some more research and try to figure this all out.
It shouldn't be this confusing. I'm hoping that somehow, they just sent me the wrong printed TOS in the modem box, but given the packaging date on the label, that seems unlikely, since it was packaged very recently. I'm going to see if they can mail me a different M2M TOS agreement before my SRD. (Soon!)

Anyone know how legit the info is that Verizon DSL will be going to 3 Mb ?

Reason I ask is I am moving, I have Mediacom Cable now and it is 3 Mb. I am considering going over to DSL if the above is true.

Reason?

My uplink is 384 kb but it sucks. It bottle necks if I have more than 10KB going for five minutes. Does it every time over and over. So I cant run a game server, I cant use bittorrent (Which is best way to get demos imo). I cant do much of anything with it as it just freezes up and then I have to power down modem. (Not sure if its bad modem, bad noise on line (Should be better as I am moving into a brand new apt complex, or if there is some other factor. But no matter what I do my modem locks up if I ever have over 10KB going out ever, which makes having the extra upload worthless).

Thunderstorms. Every single dang time there is one my modem goes out. They are getting better about getting my internet up quicker but there was one instance where my internet was out for over a week because of fried lines. My friend has had his DSL go out one time in a year and he lives quite close to me.

But this is all a moot point if Verizon is not going to 3 Mb. I have gotten used to that download speed and I honestly dont want to lose it. But if they are and anyone can verify it they are offering a nice sign up deal, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

I would hold off on switching until Verizon rolls it our in your neighborhood (let others be the guinea pigs).

Swiching to HDSL is not that difficult, but there are so many variables (i.e. distance, inside wiring condition, etc.) that we most likely will NOT see a true 3 mb download unless:

1. you live next to a central office
2. verizon pulls fiber line to your curb

I just heard about this, i was on 1.5/128 and my dad called them and they said i'd be upgraded to 384 within 24 hours. But did the upgrade to 3.0 down ever happen? I read on dslreports about 3.0/768 for 60 a month, but some say that hasn't started yet, and that the price is 45.. or 30.. or 80, and it depends on if verizon is your acutally isp or not.

I live like across the street from the station, you think if my dad called about upload they would only increase the upload speed even if 3.0 down was available for free? I didnt see the rumours about 3.0 down in july until after my dad called.

3.0/384 would be nice, but i'll be happy if 384 even starts.

I ordered new Verizon DSL yesterday. At first the sales rep said I only qualified for 768/128, so I hung up, waited 5 mins, rang again, and the rep I spoke to next said I qualified for the 1.5/384 speeds. Sweet :) She also said the 3.o download isn't being offered yet, but I would qualify for it when it is. SHould get my DSL kit in the next few days - can't wait to test the speeds.
