Found a memory card with 300+ pictures on it

Hmmm....... It must vary by state or something. I could swear DMV records are public here in Oregon.

Oregon Record Privacy Law
On September 13, 1997 Oregon 's Record Privacy Law went into effect. The purpose of the law is to make personal information contained in DMV records private. This protects Oregon citizens from having personal information in their DMV records given out to individuals not authorized to receive it.

Personal Information is:

Driver License, Driver Permit, or Identification Card Number
Name
Address
Telephone Number

I could go to the physical station, but of the people I talked to, most thought I shouldn't bother the police with this kind of matter. Im not going to call 911 or the non-emergancy dispatch.

I have PM'ed Juicebox with a suggestion on how to return the card and I am awaiting his reply. I have also e-mailed the St. Barnabas principle. We will see if he responds.

far from it, most people I talk to believe I should not bother the police with this kind of a matter. If I do decide to get my local PD envolved, Ill have to take a trip down to the station as they don't have a number I can call.

No response yet from the Principal. Granted, I just emailed him yesterday @ 5pm PST. If he doesn't respond by 5pm CST on Friday, ill go another route.

Yeah, I know. His suggestion seems a lot more creepy than what your doing. You are just trying to help a family out.

Why would anyone backup the pictures if they weren't going to return them? Seems a little too "One Hour Photo" if you ask me.

Well, I talked with some people and decided calling the PD is not the best idea. I did call the DMV however and was told that there is no possible way they could give out that information. Law enforcement, a lawyer, or court officials have access to that info. Then I found this on the DMVs website.

Confidential information includes, but may not be limited to, an individual's home address (California Vehicle Code Section 1808.21), home telephone number (Government Code Section 6254.3), physical/mental information (California Vehicle Code Section 1808.5), social security number (California Vehicle Code Section 1653.5), and photograph (California Vehicle Code Sections 12800.5 and 13005.5). Confidential home addresses will only be released when the department determines the release is necessary to complete a DMV transaction. Other requests for any confidential information must include a state or federal statute that authorizes or requires the department to release such information.

So someone's contact info is considered confidential and is not public information.

2nd 8/10 Update: Ive emailed the Principal of St. Barnabas to see if he is willing to contact them on my behalf and have the family contact me.

Thanks guys, but some of you act like there are very few people who would return the card. Maybe im naive, but I think most people would make some sort of effort to return the card. I don't really think about in the sense of returning a memory card, but returning the photographic docuementation of a family's memories.

Ill be honest, the time Ive spent to return this card probably would have just gone to GTA: SA, BF2 or some oldschool starcraft...(EDIT: or neffing here ) My time is better spent doing this...
I would sh!t my pants if I lost one of my memory cards and would only hope someone would try to get it back to me.

I think many people would have stopped after:
1. No name/address on the card
2. Appears they live halfway across the country from me
3. ???
4. Profit

Granted, I'm a cynical New Englander, but I think you've gone far beyond what most people would have done and deserve the commendation and accolades.

It's just a thought, but you could go to the station show them the picture with the liscense plate hand the guy an envelope with postage paid and say, "All you have to do is fill out the address and drop it in the mail." It might be wishful thinking, but they already know the right address and it would be a bit easier than trying to locate the solution through other means. Plus, if they can't do that at least you know.
