I set it to 6 (6C cpu), same thing, click save and nothing (aside for a fraction of a second the 'online running' goes to yellow and pauses).
I had this problem on GPU's after I changed the video card (a total new linux config) It would go yessow, then orange, changing from connecting to (I think it was yellow) updating back and forth. A reboot fixed it.

My client goes from green, briefly to yellow, then green again.
I've also just noticed in the bottom bar of the client window (where it shows ppd and the time) 'saving' is there for a few seconds.

Stefan
No, like I said, nothing happens (CPU slot wise), the pausing is for the GPU client.
Should I assign all CPU cores to the CPU slot?

I wonder if theirs some kind of write protect problem?? I did quit the client, but it made no difference.

Exactly the same on my 2nd rig! I've also noticed that even if I out 6 in the 'value' box, it still shows -1 in the slots window.

Rebooted my main rig, no change, I'll try manual editing.

I wish Stanford would junk their crappy client and switch to BOINC!

Ok I've got my main rig going, if I clicked 'add' just once and didn't click the 2nd 'add' in an attempt to edit the name it worked! So what's the point of the 2nd add option??

The 2nd add option(unless I'm looking at something different) would to be to add an extra slot option, such as accepting beta work units. I had issues with it not saving my configuration changes in general though when I set it up a few days ago, so I wonder if you were running into the same issue. I did the same steps identically three times in a row, and the first two times it didn't save and the third time it did.

Oh ok, I thought it was just part of the normal process for adding a CPU slot, doh! It isn't obvious though.

My client goes from green, briefly to yellow, then green again.
What does this even mean? My client only always has white letters scrolling by on black background. ;-)

Seriously though. If something goes wrong, look through the log for clues. If it is inconclusive, post the log here.

(PS, in another window, I am getting a summary log of the three clients which I currently have on duty.)

Should I assign all CPU cores to the CPU slot?
No. If you fold on a mid-sized or big GPU, and want it to run at maximum, and have an Intel CPU, then
  • do not load the hyperthreads on this CPU,
  • dedicate one real core to each mid-sized or big GPU in the system,
  • and use only the remaining real cores for CPU load such as BOINC or CPU folding.
The optimum approach may differ if you have one or more smaller GPUs, or if you have an AMD CPU – somebody who has those should comment.

I tried to get F@H running on one of my Linux rigs, but the WUs kept failing. I gave up after about an hour.

Re colour, you're looking at the log tab, not the status tab. In there the progress bars, status columns and after Client: (near the top) are coloured according to the status, green for running, yellow for paused in the status column etc.

Re logs, I did look, as I said earlier the log said nothing about it.

What do you regard as a mid sized GPU?
Btw, you can see my rigs in my signature :p

[…of FAHControl.] Actually I am looking just at the log, not at FAHControl. I have only one computer left on which FAHControl is able to run, a Windows 7 laptop which I rarely use anymore.

I take from this that there actually was no CPU slot created. (Else we would have seen it in the log.)

I remained deliberately vague. ;-) I have not used anything else than 1080Ti for a long while now, therefore don't have experience with CPU utilization effects on folding performance on other GPUs.

I don't know. Gave up on it. Deleted the fah stuff and went back to mining on those rigs. Lol

Yea at the time that's right, you did see my later posts though where I managed to add the CPU slots after all? ;)

Btw, I seem to recall now that with my rigs, I'm ok to assign all CPU threads to folding (anyone correct me if I'm wrong though).

Only if you don't also have a GPU on that box. If you do, the GPU PPD will suffer badly.

Edit: example. If you have 16 threads, and a video card that does one million ppd, it could go down by 200-300k, and that is more than the CPU puts out total (in that example)

So i have not tested this extensively by any means but can't you simply specify just a bit less core count on your CPU slot to compensate or is it just dumb at balancing them.

Typically if you make the CPU slot equal to the actual number of cores (not logical cores) the impact to the GPU should be minimal, and far less than the gain provided by the CPU. This may not apply to quad cores or smaller, I've only observed this on hex cores and up.

I don't use any CPU for folding, as its very inefficient. But the same applies to other things. So my lowest cpu core count are 3900x's with 24 threads. I use 22 threads for WCG or Rosetta, and 2 for F@H along with the video card. One physical core is always been good.

When using really low end cards (geforce 710, r250x) I don't think you need to worry about it as much. I see no change in PPD on either of those low end cards if I leave a dedicated CPU for them, or not.

edit - on my ancient A10-7870k, I have the igpu + the r250x running F@H and 3 of 4 CPU threads folding. The host CPU is around 81% - Honestly I might even be able to use 4 CPU threads and still get a increase in PPD.
