I don't think this is a bad law. Too many accidents are caused by people hitting vehicles on shoulder, and not even just cops, but any vehicle on the shoulder. Cops are especially at risk because of helping and ticketing motorists.

Like any law there is going to be room for abuse, but I've always thought it was a pretty common sense idea to merge over a lane or slow down when there is a vehicle on the shoulder. You never know when they are going to try to get back onto the highway, you may have misjudged the angle and their rear-end is sticking out, or you might just clip them because you don't know how to drive. Either way, I guess it is a lesson to learn.

On the expressway?

How is it possible to hit a cop while hes getting out. Either way he will be getting out from his drivers side which is usually facing the concrete barrier or whatever, not the highway.

Who pulls over to the left?

F**king idiots that shouldn't be on the road in the first place.

I DONT pull over to the left.

I was just having trouble visualizing things in my mind.

I did see a cop probably doing 15-20 over the speed limit in the downtown area afterwards too. I wouldn't think anything of it, if i hadn't been pulled over earlier.

I haven't seen it. But it's a remake of a movie from the 70s (which itself was based on actual events). I've been meaning to watch both. I guess you might not actually call it a remake, since both are based on actual events.

B) Slow down to 20mph under the speed limit. I would assume that if you were in a school zone, you would be trapped indefinitely if you chose B.
C) Scream "Fvcking pigs!" as you fly past them in your Miata.

hilaruous, but...

or travel at 5 miles per hour when the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less.

In Ohio and PA you are required to either slow to 45 or below, or to move over one lane. Otherwise it's exactly the ticket you described.

it's the law to move over, in FL at least

I lived in FL and never had this issue.

turn in your license immediately, this law's been on the books over 3 years

See this is the problem, these laws are relatively new and many people are unaware of them.

Here in Ohio, they passed a similiar law a year ago.

For the first few months after its passage, troops would pull violators over, but only gave them warnings instead of tickets.

good idea, for everyone's safety

but this is something that should be taught as courtesy, not enforced with laws and fines

I've wondered about this actually, we have 4 lane highways here and if someone is in the far left lane and getting pulled over, is it preferred to have them cross the three lanes to pull over on the right side or is it preferred that he pull over to the right to avoid making the officer follow him across three lanes of traffic?

Waaa, I didn't know about this law. Wonder if it is in NC.
It's like the state can create new laws, don't tell you about it, and ticket you...
I think it is all BS, but atleast this law does make sense.
For me, I try to switch lanes if I can or obey the speed limit. Never really slowed down to 20 mph. Kinda excessive... (60mph -> 20mph... mmm...kay).

Ummm... the law doesn't state you have to slow down to 20 MPH... you have to slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit.

So if the speed limit is 65, slow down to 45. Not that big of a deal, and it's something you should be doing anyways just as a courtesy...

I don't remember if this became an actual law or not in WI but you either have to slow way down or move over and get out of the lane immediately next to the cop. DO you ever watch those Amazing Police videos and see how often cops get hit by idiots that fly by right next to their cars?

Should be common sense but unfortunately it needs to be made a law in most places to get people to do it.
