Finally test drove the Scion tC this morning.

which sounds like typical dealer bs. BUT, i know you've done your hmwk and wouldnt get suckered by some stealership, so ill just be quiet now.

either way, when you have the scion in your driveway, post pics. enjoy.

Actually that sounds high, most dealerships have said their only getting 15 or so all the way through fall.

There wasn't an indicator light on the gauge cluster saying that it was on or off, so damned if I know. On my car, the O/D Off lights comes on the guage cluster when you push it in.

I don't know if I could own a tC after having 6-7 inches of headroom in my xB - every other car makes me feel clausterphobic when I drive in them......

Huh? WHen did I say I didn't like the car?

Your review mentions something that every new car should have anyway or something you don't like. One would think that an auto enthusiast would be "blown away" when they've found a future car.

I haven't searched but I think your Mazda 3 posts were more favorable than this one. I don't think you did it intentially though... that's why I said the buyers remorse comment.

I didn't have as much time in the Mazda 3s as I did in the Scion. I spent a good 15-20 minutes driving the tC along with about a half hour of climbing through the car and checking out all the features.

I was so giddy about actually seeing the Mazda 3 in person for the first time when I drove it that I probably glossed over a lot of things that I should have been paying more attention too. Ergonomics wise, the Scion is simply superior and everything just feels right.
Just a suggestion, but maybe you should go check out the 3 again a little more thoroughly now that you have a better idea of what it's going up against. I'm sure there was some giddiness when you got into the Scion as well, because as others have said, the tranny thing is a little worrisome. If you went to test drive a new Accord or something and that happened, I'm sure you'd be ripping it a new one.

This is a pretty big decision, I'd take a little extra time to make sure it's the right one.

The OD button is usually on the gearbox I think on Toyotas.
The light might have been on the button itself.

I dont see why the RPM would have been than high unless you had the Overdrive button on.

What isekii says about the overdrive pretty much explains the trannie problem.

And actually, I've driven the new accords and I like them alot

My Family's CR-V is around 4400RPM when I pop on overdrive. This is around 55-65mph.
The dealer prolly had it on to make it seem more performance oriented.
Cuz when you pop on OD, you do feel the extra power.

That was a hypothetical situation, the Accord was just an example. My point was that if this weren't a car you had so been looking forward to, you'd be looking at that possible tranny problem with a more critical eye,

If it were a Honda, I wouldn't think twice about it...but if it were a Hyundai...;)

why do you care whether it's an auto or manual ?
it's not like you're the one that's driving it or making payments on it :p

Except Honda has had its fair share of transmission problems.... :)

I'm willing to bet when it comes time to sell your car, you would be better off with a stick for the tC. I'm sure there will be a big enthusiast community that would want a stick for it, kind of like the 240SX community.

If it were a Celica, maybe...but not in a nearly 3,000 lb econo coupe/hatch;)

I'll bet 3-5 years down the road when you decide to get rid of it, it would be an easier sell to some kid ricer who really wants the stick.

Just a thought.

Yeah, I'm not feeling the excitement from this review. You might as well be buying another Camry.

"Driving manual increases the length and girth of my meat stick by 300%!"
Please. Manual isn't for everyone--with the driving conditions I have--I thank God for automatic.
Let the man get what he wants.

Very cool, i can't wait till my dealer gets one in stock so i can test drive it. I test drove a manual Xb about a month ago and was fairly impressed. I loved the styling, but wasnt too fond of the barely over 100hp engine. I think the tC would fit my bill just right. Same as you, i would love a manual, but in daily traffic driving, my left leg could use a break. I have enough lower back problems as it is.

My top 3 right now are;

Scion tC
Mazda 3/6
Mini Cooper S

With the Acura TSX out of my price range, unless i can pull off a miracle of a lease :D

Yes, the phrase "BBQGRASS" should have definitely been used at some point. ;)

I'm still partial to my Mz3. :p I loathe 2 door cars and won't buy another car without HID's again after having them on my 3.

LOL. Hehe, the way I see it, this car is just A-B transportation for me, same as my Camry is. Something that I plan on keeping for another 4-5 years (I've had my Camry since Feb of '00). I use my car for trips to the store in town and trips to see my GF on the highway. I don't go for "spirited" driving though the country either.

So I'm SORRY to the other people out there if I'm not beaming with praise for the car :) I test drove it, I pointed out its high points and low points and that's it. To recap, just to show that I'm not doggin' on the car. I loved:

- The styling inside and out
- Ergonomics. All the controls are logically placed and well shaped. Controls are easy to see and read
- Exterior Fit and Finish. Every exterior panel had excellent fit and finish. The paint was clear and consistent with no orange peal towards the bottom of the doors/rocker panel as you see with so many cars.
- Interior fit and finish. The dash was solidly constructed and not made out of that cheap hard plastic crap that so many auto companies love to use these days. The only really "hard" plastic I found was around where the cup holders are in the center console. Every switch turned easily and the controls felt very solid.
- The ride was perfect. Not to soft, not to firm. But then again, I'm coming from a wallowy Camry LE :p Turn in was crisp and the turning circle is quite small for this car.
- The engine was rather smooth and refined. Not to much engine noise came in during city driving. The engine was noticeable at highway speeds (but as isekii pointed out, the O/D button was probably pressed which was causing the 4,100 RPM @ 65MPH issues I noticed)
- Cargo room was surprisingly generous and there is a standard removeable cargo shade.
- There's a little light in the cargo area that illuminates at night
- There is additional storage under the rear cargo with room for more stuff
- There are large map pockets in each front door
- The center arm rest has a two-stage storage area
- Both side windows offer auto up AND down. Seriously nice :p
- I love the little indicators in the side mirrors...nice euro touch.
- The 17" wheels look GORGEOUS. You just have to see them in person

I could go on and on, but I loved this car.
