wonder why they didnt release this in movie theatres??

Because it would be a marketing disaster after they released a lackluster movie with the franchise name (FF:SW).

yup, its a straight to video movie, like many animes. i guess its an oav sorta. and no it didn't have a "movie" budget like it woulda if it were targeted at theaters from the start.

I already downloaded the DVD-quality video yesterday. Some hardcore fan released English subtitles for it this morning (he did a superb job) and I saw the movie this morning.

(There are no spoilers in this post.)

You're probably wondering how good it is, and I must say it is superb. It is NOTHING like the old crappy Final Fantasy Spirits Within. Here it is directly related to the plot of FFVII with strong characters and a deep storyline that is confusing but not as confusing as that of the game (the plot of which I recommend you google so that you have some idea what's going on and who the characters are). New characters not in the game are introduced.

The game does not delve too deep on the characters because it is focused on ACTION! The fight scenes are incredibly acrobatic and more thrilling than those in the matrix. The old Final Fantasy movie tried too hard to seem "real" and "human" and therefore wound up very boring. This new film creates very realistic and human characters and environments BUT takes advantage of animation by doing things not possible in real life. As in the Final Fantasy games, you'll see the characters fight in awesome and over-the-top fashion with insane stunts and (some) supernatural powers. That's all I will say. You must watch this movie whether or not you like Final Fantasy or animation in general. It is a wonderful spectacle and you will be wowed simply by watching it even if you don't get immeresed into the experience (which you almost certainly will anyways). It's only 90 min long, but there's a lot of substance.

What saddens me is that, after the first one was such a spectacular failure, Sony decided against giving this film a theatrical release. This movie deserves to be on the big screen! I also wish they had a simultaneous global release (or at least a Japanese DVD with English subtitles in American and European stores) so that honest folk like me wouldn't have to rip it off the net. After the praise I've heard of it I decided I needed to see it, and who knows how long it'll take to come to America? (It'll be at least 6-12 months).

For more "info" you can PM me.

I think they did an amazing job animating the cartoon, but the story/drama was ass. So it's like all anime, but prettier

I'm a little surprised by the overall negativity of the story shown so far... I actually found a lot of depth in it.

My Quick Take on Christian themes in the movie *spoilers*-
spoilers
spoilers
spoilers

Did anyone else here notice that this movie was stuffed with Christian references?

The movie opened right from where VII ended with the destruction of the city some 400 odd years later, the main question here being whether it was man that destroyed themselves or the sin of man that midgar symbolically represented being destroyed. Aeris was also given a significantly, perhaps godlike, role in this movie. Her earlier sacrifice to humanity has left her to continue to live and even become a voice of the lifestream. Her overall presence makes her alive even after her death, showing a sort of immortality to the soul, Aeris never died but continues to live on in her afterlife and the partys' memories. Cloud, who in himself holds original sin through the Jenova inside of him, seems to be casted as a type of Peter trying to atone for his betrayal of Aeris. At the end of the film he seems to become a type of apostle through his baptizing of the boy and thus showing a passage of his role to others (it seems as that boy is some sort of successor to Cloud).

I also always liked a lot of the buddist/hindu references shown through the lifestream but that wasn't really covered much in the movie.

you're probably reading way WAY too much into it. lol. the japanese like taking themes/references from other sources and cultures and jamming in haphazardly into stuff. ie evangelion. lol.

the fight scenes were lolwtf. :)

hehe ya. evangelion was just loosely based off of the designs and nomenchlature of western religions just to make it sound and look cool. They really didn't anticipate a large western audience and the overanalysis that came w/ it.

ff7ac's the same. the whole thing being based off of a western religion is probably just coincidence, or they just took some of it and decided to use it just for the sake of story.

and ya, the fight scenes were really overthe top, but hey, it's CG, and since it's CG, you have to do stuff that can't be done in RL, so go for it. I liked it even though it was "woa wtf no way lol"

they seriously should have skipped that lousy cartoon character on that big cat thing... and skip the cat thing as well, for us who have not playd the game it was just totaly silly and made no sense at all.

Overall, excelent movie :)
better than spirits within by far, way better animated though sometimes it was too obviosly mocaped. Spirits within was just bad mocap, bad facial animation.

I bet Pixar are creaming in their pants thinking how they can do all those special effects :p

errr, that redxiii was the red wolf, and the cat on top is cait sith. Just 2 characters that had a small sidestory in the game.

hehe

"I liked it when Cloud launched his 6 mini-swords or 'funnels' and surrounded Sephiroth, h4x0red his gibson, and then Cloud used his Newtype powers to push the asteroid back into Earth's orbit."

UH NO. Cait Sith is the best character in the entire game. His presence was required or sacrafices would have had to be made.

I liked the movie but I think it missed something, hard to say, to me it seemed more like an episode of a tv show than the 3 part lord of the rings trilogy they should have made it. Way more story, way more battles, way more build it in the fight scenes would have rocked. I expected more from vincent too. Argh, it was great to see the quality of cgi coming out though.

I could tell you, but then I'd... well, it would give away story from the game. Basically, Cait Sith is a giant doll that has come to life. They sell them at a theme park in FF7.

You can't watch this movie without having played the game several hundred times or having played it very RECENTLY. I was pretty lost.

That being said, the motorcycle that dispenses swords is fvcking awesome. And the fight sequences were INSANE. The animation also blows anything Pixar has done out of the water.
