Fermi's already have significant price drops

Wow, who would have thought Nvidia would be able to put on price pressure and begin a possible price war with AMD on this current gen GPU's? Newegg has several gtx470's for $299 right now - only $10 more than the cheapest 5850. And there are several gtx480's for $399 - only $15 more than the cheapest hd5870.

A few weeks ago, there was a weekend special for a gtx470 at $299 with an additional $25 MIR. I'm not sure if these prices have anything to do with current sales volume, future nvidia GPU plans, or simply just competitive practices on Nvidia's part --- but it's nice to finally see price movements in a significant downward trend from either camp.

Probably due to the Fermi-based boards selling poorly. Building up stock is costly, so it's understandable that retailers want the cards off their hands as soon as possible.

Wow.. holiday weekend in US? Will prices keep? $299 and $349 are nice prices for these cards. They're the "off brands" but for those who don't care, damn nice price break.

Not discounted as heavily but cheaper than EVGA's are the Zotac models. I'm liking Zotac, they'd be my first "off brand" pick..

Not sure if there are typos here or you guys are posting prices with discounts factored in.

To the OP, GTX 470 is $10 more than the cheapest 5850 and the GTX 480 is $15 more than the chapest 5850? I'm sure you meant 5870, but just double check I'd jump on that GTX 480 right now!!!

Woops - yeah I meant the gtx480 is $15 more than the cheapest 5870. Still not bad when factoring in price/performance ratio. But thanks, I corrected it!

This is great for those that can buy from newegg.

Unfortunately for the other these promotions don't translate in prices drops elsewhere.

Both in Portugal and UK (places where I buy Hardware) the cheapest 470 are still €50-60/£40-70 more than a 5850 and sometimes the same price of the 5870 (for reference in Portugal aquapc http://www.aquapc.com/loja/index.php?id=12 and chiptec http://www.chiptec.net/index.php?catid=4&subcat=340&pagina=70&order=preco and UK http://www.overclockers.co.uk) and the 480 is around €90+/£80+ more than the 5870.

Or just check http://www.pixmania.com/ .

So while I can see this being exciting for North America consumers, for Europeans (or some Europeans) it isn't as exciting as a MSRP drop.

Reports are that there is excess inventory in the channel. Board partners are trying to get the stock moving. That means no more re-orders for nVidia until existing stock sells. Bad news for nV, good news for consumers.

ATI also had several good deals. The price difference between 5850 deals and GTX470 is still there:

All weekend eWiz had 5850 TwinFrozr II for $255: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=...ess-Video-Card

XFX 5870 can be purchased for $370: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=...ess-Video-Card
While newegg had HIS for $350 for 2 weeks.

The cheapest GTX480 I could find was $430-440: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=...ess-Video-Card

So even with these price drops, ATI cards still continue to offer better bang for the buck. What has emerged though is GTX470 SLI > 5970 for less $.

My guess is that Fermi parts just weren't selling all that well at $350 for the 470 and $500 for the 480. With their prices so much closer to the lower performing AMD parts they'll likely move a lot of parts. Of course $255 for a 5850 offers very nice bang for the buck, but that's hardly the normal price.

"Fermi is so expensive because supply is limited"; "Fermi = fail"

"Fermi price is going down; stores can't sell them"; "Fermi = fail"

LOL

Apparantly Nvidia is always wrong with their pricing? ;)

It is hard to judge because you don't see an AMD reaction.

On the other hand these drops on prices aren't generalized, so maybe there is nothing to react to in the first place.

Of course the prices are going down. ATI won this round hands down. Theres excess stock because nobody is buying the Nvidia cards. Its a simple case of supply and demand here, hence why ATI cards are at the same price they've been for, well forever really. :)

This is likely correct. There have been reports and articles already circulating about Fermi having very poor sales.

The cards have been available and easy to buy since they were released to market, this has never before been the case when NV has started selling a new GPU. In the past it has been like the 58XX series launch, scarce availability due to high demand at release.

There is probably not much demand for the Fermi cards, only the 480 offers anything over the 58XX series and it's price is $100 higher.

woot. Yeah, I think they haven't been selling well (understandable for the 480 because it's a halo item, kinda understandable for the 470 at $350.)

But $299 for the gtx470? Good price point imho. Very nice. Then hopefully the 5850 will drop to $250. I still see no reason to buy the 5830 or 465. The GTX470 is a damn good card if you can get one under $300, hell yeah.

I think it might have more to do with the soon-to-be-released GTX 460.

They have been coming down very steeply in price here in Aus, I'm very tempted to bite.

Exactly, I have no idea why anyone is surprised. I'm curious to see how low they will go.

I'm just going to focus on the fact that this is good news for consumers.

Being in Japan those newegg deals don't affect me directly, but seeing any positive movement on the price/performance front is nice.
