No amount of exercise eh? There is a bunch of nonsense in this thread. Many of you have no idea what you are rattling off about. But this post was especially wrong so I chose to single it out for refutation. http://www.michaelphelps.net/michael-phelps-diet/ Notice how he eats mayo and entire pizzas. He loved fast food burgers and such too, before he got the subway contract.

You can continue to demonstrate your ignorance, or STFU, your choice.

What's more likely? Your average fat slob changing their eating habits or training like an olympic swimmer?

You morons and your idiot talk about how exercise is all that matters. Sure, people can eat whatever they want, as long as they exercise all day every day. Because it's not like fat people have jobs or kids or anything else to do but exercise.

You can ride that horse all you want. I posted a factual rebuttal; not my issue you agreed with the dumbass assertion he made.

And let me be clear: I could give a shit about more likely scenario here. Either the poster should be explicit in presentation of assertions, or be prepared to get called on it.

Oh, and lame tactic, putting me in a group I did not declare myself a member of. I never said I thought exercise is all that matters.

12,000 calories a day is insane. no wonder the guy smokes weed, otherwise he would probably throw up half his meal every day

It's hilarious when the ATOT crowd tries to talk about fitness and diet. Anyone looking for health advice please ignore this thread and go to H&F instead.

Phelps isn't LOSING weight, though, so that's not really relevant to the post you quoted. He's already got his metabolism working as well as it can, so he needs that food to support his five-hours-per-day habit.

BMI is next to worthless. It does not differentiate between excessive adipose tissue and muscle.

It is a good guideline for the average person.

You are trying to pull the "a champion bodybuilder weighs 250 pounds and they are in great shape therefore even though the most I lift is the BigMac from my plate to my mouth I am not fat" excuse.

I anticipated the semantics debate. He grossly overgeneralized and I called him on it. Had he been more specific I would have had no issue.

And so we are clear: You can eat crap and lose weight. And no need to be extreme to do it. Give FatHead a watch if you have not seen it.

Am I now? Are you insinuating I am fat?

You don't have to be anything close to a champion bodybuilder to be in the "overweight" range on the BMI scale because of muscle mass. I'd hazard that most people who lift weights regularly will hit that level in their first couple of years.

ikr. I'd love to see what some of these posters really look like.

Here is my guess:

Disclaimer - I am overweight. Not horribly obese, but could definitely stand to lose a few Lbs.

this.

if you have a frame that much wider at all than normal, and are athletic, you are fat according to BMI

BMI is heavily flawed because its based on an 'average sized frame'

Back in my early 20s when I was playing soccer and roller hockey and lifting, my BMI said I was 25 lbs overweight, and my BF% was about 10

yay BMI :whiste:

now....Im a bit pudgy, and of course fat according to BMI. I tried to get in my normal BMI range about 4 years ago, and all I ever did was feel sick and weak from not being able to eat enough, but I have wide shoulders and chest for a person my height, shopping for shirts only makes it more obvious :awe:

notice I said I am overweight NOW.. when I wasnt, I was still a fatty on BMI.

I didnt measure my BF% back in my 20's on one of those stupid scales, I sat in a tub at the kines dept, the joys of friends of grad school

you are probably one of the bird chested bean poles that cant figure out how other people way more than you. :ninja:

I have a cousin like that, 6' 2", 170 lbs, thinks anyone that weighs more than him is a big fat ass, even thought he is helpless in a stiff breeze

all of my extra mass currently resides in my gut, aka beer belly, and thats mostly the cause of it too.

You know what? You guys are right. I could definitely see them becoming professional athletes. That's far more likely than leaving the bacon and cheese off their hamburger...

I never said that the typical BMI is not have limitations. But it is still a helpful tool if you apply a little common sense.

yeah too bad most Dr's dont even do that. and notice your rebuttle was 'ha ha ur fat' as if that would actually change whatever weight my statement has.

your BMI says you should weight this # exactly, so you should work on your weight! I dont care what size you are actually!

luckily I found a Dr thats reasonable about BMI, and diet, among other things

According to you there were 2 cases you were "overweight" according to BMI

(1) You were a serous athlete
(2) You were "a bit pudgy"

So applying some common sense it should be fairly easy for people to tell which one they are.

BMI is a simple method that works reasonably well for most people. If someone thinks they are outside the mainstream then by all means they can/should use a more advanced method for determining if they are overweight.

Saying BMI "is heavily flawed" is largely an excuse for fat people who are trying to rationalize what BMI is legitimately telling them.

BMI is certainly a lot better than just using an "estimated weight" to "estimate" if you are overweight.
