Oh, and anyone who has a justifiable reason for having an always-on cellphone/pager would be rightly pissed.

Good for them. They can stay home.

okay, true. but i'd rather be paranoid than not. but you people seem lifeless and non-emotional to agree that throwing away what is sometimes the only method of contact during an emergency, is a good idea. i mean, i'd rather err on the side of caution and have my phone on me in case something happens, that i might be able to help with.
as i keep saying and everyone ignores, if the theater can enforce (do not need to increase the number of employees) cell-phone rules, it works out. turn your phone on vibrate or silent mode, and voila. no ringing to disturb people. that person can walk out of the theater and answer the phone or call the person back.

Perhaps I seem heartless and unemotional, but given the state of society, it's hard not to be.

The theater enforcing a cell-phone rule is a non-starter unless you get people to cooperate. It comes down to "common courtesy" again. You have to get people to go along with it and realize that "cell phone ringing during movie = pissed off people around you" in order to make any kind of impact on the problem. Unfortunately, being courteous to others is a dying art and I have no faith in the ability of a theater to enforce this.

If you can't relax for 2 hours and just enjoy the movie without having your cell phone on you, we have a problem. Movies are entertainment. Don't blow the experience for everyone else because you don't want to take the chance of having something happen.

Granted, my case is not the norm. I was simply pointing out that there is no simple answer to the current lack of respect many people have for one another. Although that roundhouse to the face idea may be a start....

What if someone need to call OUT?

Robbery or <insert crime> in the theater.
Heart attack or <insert medical emergency> in the theater.
Fire in the theater, fire exits/escape route blocked.

Hard lines in every theater. Boom.
If I can't get to a fire exit, what makes you think I can get to a hard line?

One loss of life and this would be taken down ASAP.

people got out of a fire before cell phones just fine. A cell phone isn't going to help you find an exit any better.

there is simply no good reason anybody can come up with for having a cell phone in a theater. So far not one single persone can come up with a legitimate reason.

Yeah, and people died in fires before cell phones too. I'm just playing devil's advocate... I could care less. :)

From reading some peoples responses here, I should be dead already since I don't have a cell phone!

The rights of the induvidual can usurp the rights of the group if the induviduals life is in danger, look at ambulances having the right of way. Induvidual rights have precedent over group comfort. Hell the reason social security and welfare exists are so that induvidual rights are proctected by the masses. And if you get annoyed enough at a cell phone in a movie to rant about human life not being worth anything, your a pretty pathetic person and might as well hang yourself.

umm.. what about emergencies, and someone desperately needs to inform someone in the movietheater?

They could walk 3 feet to the exit, then place the call?

Exactly.

Thank you. See, now if people could only walk that same 3 feet in a non-emergency so everyone else wouldn't get pissed.

Yes, because when someone's trying to call in to the person inside the theater, that person instinctively knows to move outside the room.

Name an emergency where it matters if you get someone ELSE in a two hour timeframe that is likely to occur. Further, people in the past got allong just fine without cell phones, so we can stand to be without them for 2 hours. And lastly, they could go and get the person, or they could call the theater.

Someones a top level member of an Inteligence Agency. Someones a highranking governemtn official, and is in danger of being assassinated...the list goes on...

Repeat offenders shall be placed in this cage with the belt motor start stop station passed around the audience so everyone has an opportunity to play "arcy sparky" with Mister Van De Graff. ;)

Yeah, it's definitely critical that people receive calls in the movie theatre. After all, it's not like we all survived just fine without that for 80 years prior...

Wait...

If people with your sense of entitlement and lack of reasoning abilities are what my old hometown is putting out these days, I must admit that I'm ashamed.

I prefer a roundhouse kick to the head for offenders...

Was in the news one time - I believe someone complained to someone else about his cellphone use during a movie. The cellphone user left, came back with a baseball bat, and tried to whack the guy on the side of his head. Guy survived because he was resting his head on his hand, which was completely shattered.

So yeah, roundhouse kick - ensures that the offender is unconscious.
