You can spend time arguing on ATOT but you can't do a quick Google search?

Do you have your cell phone turned on? Maybe someone can call you with the answer.

phone rings in theater = get mad, report if you want, and continue to watch movie

Why can you not understand the use of capital letters?

grammar nazi
and yes, i just looked it up, found it on wiki
so... cry some more? uh oh.. not using capital letters.... :gasp:

why must you complain about every little thing, apparently you do have the attention span of a squirrel and thus cannot concentrate on the task at hand (watching movie) because its not perfectly silent.

just remember, without you, world keeps on spinnin ;)
besides, i made the comparison to a nazi because you seem to be in the boat where the loss of life means nothing to you, if it means the ability to watch a freaking movie in perfect silence? thus, perfect time to compare to a nazi. is there an internet law about comparing to marxists and stalinism followers? cuz you fit in that boat too, specifically the stalin boat. not exactly the preferred form of communism.

edit:
anywho, i misread and though it said 'search'.. i don't know why... i didn't think it was one of those 'real' 'internet laws', thought it was an ATOT thing or something. i guess i shoulda tried because theres 'laws' for everything anymore. i love netiquette/net laws. kinda funny.

Learning to cope with life also equates to turn your phone off and have some consideration for other people. If you can't deal with the fact that you might be unreachable during the movie, that's not "coping with life". That's called "paranoia". Watch the movie at home if you can't deal with not having your phone on at all times.

If you're in a public place, you implicitly give up certain privileges out of courtesy for other people. That includes using your phone in a theater.

So, as a service, they should make every person leave their cell phone at a desk as they enter a theater and receive a number (such as a coat check). Have someone sit at the desk and answer the phones and determine when it is necessary to bother the movie patron. If it is, flash a number on a led display on the side of the theater (not the front, where it would bother people).

If you are a doctor, or a concerned parent... check the display occasionally. If not, enjoy the flick.

People that sneak em in cant use them because of the mesh in the walls.

Problem solved.

put your phone on vibrate, if you need to talk to someone leave the theater. that's all there is to it. there are plenty of instances where someone needs to be able to be contacted during a movie, if tick and his ilk don't agree, tfb.

This is a good idea. It's a more fully formed version of my idea. It could definitly work.

It'd be different if everyone did this, but they don't. Oh, and I'm extending my idea to librarys, but in the library, you have a limited blocking system, making it possible to see that you've gotten a call, but not enough signal to actually pick up the call sucessfully.

I wish there was a way to force phones to vibrate mode upon entry to the theatre.

No problem then.

That would be the perfect solution of course, but the phone manufacturers would have to cooperate.

Great idea, except for the "common courtesy" part, which face plants your idea straight into the cold hard concrete of reality.

People won't do it consistently unless they're forced to or forcefully reminded to via negative reinforcement. If you were allowed to bitch-slap someone for using their phone in the theater, this idea might actually work.

what is a positive contribution? becoming a drone and agreeing, or providing the feedback that you obviously wanted. im showing the other side of the argument that apparently no one else believes in. kinda disturbing, quite frankly.
life has evolved and changed around us, don't force us to give up what we have learned to live around. just force specific changes, in lieu of getting rid of it completely.

okay, true. but i'd rather be paranoid than not. but you people seem lifeless and non-emotional to agree that throwing away what is sometimes the only method of contact during an emergency, is a good idea. i mean, i'd rather err on the side of caution and have my phone on me in case something happens, that i might be able to help with.
as i keep saying and everyone ignores, if the theater can enforce (do not need to increase the number of employees) cell-phone rules, it works out. turn your phone on vibrate or silent mode, and voila. no ringing to disturb people. that person can walk out of the theater and answer the phone or call the person back.

I don't like people talking on cell phones in a movie theater any more than most of you, but I do have to say some of you have a too simplistic view of this world.

There are certain professions when you are always on call. Personally I am a professional firefighter/medic and subject to recall anytime. I don't get paid call pay and I don't have time when I am not on call. There are many police/fire/EMS employees in this same situation that I am personally aware of. I am contacted by text message on a phone that only vibrates when I am in public. This disturbs no one, and everyone in the theater gets the benfit of my company. Yes I am serious. Having someone like me in the theater is good for the whole because I am trained in recognizing and abating in numerous emergecies including the following: Fire, Rescue situations, Medical and Traumatic emergencies, Hazardous materials incidents, Terrorism incidents..... I could go on but you get the point.

Do you really want peole like me to NOT be able to be in the theater with you?

Well, your not the one I'm targeting with this. Mattco's idea copes with this. The point is not to stop the people who are using cellphones responsibly, it's to deal with the jerkwads.

It's clever, but people would still bring their phones into the theater. Or if you are coupling it with the faraday box, you have a few hundred phones there, there would be huge lines just to exit the theater, plus you'd definitely need more than one person to monitor the phones and to check them in and out. And people probably don't want to trust somebody else to handle their phone calls, so people who think they might get a call just won't go to the movies at all. And empolying these extra people would push costs up.

I'd like it if people would shut up in general during a movie. Even without cellphones people still talk and kick your seat and whatever.

Well, for every one of you there are 1.3 million inconsiderate people who would like for me to listen to their American Idol ringtone and their pedantic conversations. I think I will take the chance on an emergency. :p
