Wonder how much drivers will improve performance on these new titles coming out that are killing Kepler and the 7000 series. MSAA, HBAO, ect, all useless features with current hardware.

SSAO and HBAO both result in dark halo's around the profile of object (when they are in the foreground). HDAO to a large degree does not suffer from this.

If you are looking to gain a decent fps boost, turn off Ambient Occlusion completely and set Alpha to Converge to "enhanced". A2C does a good job smoothing foliage in the foreground. Add 2 or 4x MSAA to further smooth the image.

HDAO looks good, but comes with a large performance hit.

Agreed, HDAO seems to be the best balance, also FXAA seems to be implemented within the post processing so MSAA isn't necessary.

hmm interesting redundancy. I will dump MSAA tonight and compare image quality.

As a side note. all the ##AA stuff is getting confusing. HDAO HBAO SSAO MSAA FXAA A2C blah blah blah... headache
gone are the days when all we had to do was choose our level of AA

I am a bit confused as people have talked about playing the game yet it is not even released yet.

I am confused. Which is the best looks wise for a 7000 series card?
Hdao
Hbao
Ssao

HDAO is the best in terms of visuals, but comes with such a high performance hit that most don't think it's worth it. The next best would be HBAO followed by SSAO.

For me that most taxing is HBAO then HDAO then SSAO.

And visually ya HDAO is the best but I still avg in 50s and 60s at 1080p max (but no AA) in FC3 with it.

Does anyone know if 12.11 Beta 8 is the performance driver for far cry 3 that Guru3D referenced on 11/30/2012 in their Far Cry 3 review?

They said that AMD will be releasing a performance driver on Monday or Tuesday for the game, and I wasn't sure if Beta 8 was that driver and if the pending driver was just WHQL?

Anyone heard anything? I'd love a 10-20% increase in frames that's for sure lol.

the performance driver for farcry 3 is the next driver after beta 8 due monday or tuesday. its mostly a beta driver.

This is an AMD evolved title and it doesn't have an optimized driver out already?

Weird that they are set to launch the performance driver at the US launch when the game was released 5 days prior in the rest of the world.

Well, AMD is based in North America. Not that it means anything, but They probably have some reason for their release timeframe.

Of course, I'm not complaining. Actually I think it plays really well on my 7950 as it is, but any increase in performance is welcomed.

12.11 BETA 11

Improves performance in Far Cry 3 (up to 25% with 8xMSAA, SSAO enabled @ 1600p, and up to 15% with 8xMSAA, HDAO enabled @1600p) (AMD Catalyst 12.11 CAP2 must also be installed)

AMD Catalyst 12.11 CAP2 has just been released, and should be used in conjunction with AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta11
Improves Far Cry 3 performance for single GPU configurations with AA enabled

I think by the time I get around to being able to play it (after x-mas) performance will largely have been fixed. That's my hope anyway.

I just have too much else to play at the moment so I'm going to set this one under the tree, in a manner of speaking since it's on steam.

HDAO is like a 20% drop in perf right? Thats pretty much in line with BF3 as well, and one of the major difference high vs ultra besides 4xMSAA.

Frankly these useless features hurt performance too much compared to the visual gains.. graphics have hit a huge diminishing returns of late. Seriously, shadows are darker, big deal.

"Let's just put in visual features that look different instead of better that incur a sizeable performance hit so you can justify a new card. Hey look NV gets 1% more fps here!" Wooooo.

Unimpressed by technical quality of graphics for a looooooooong time since Crysis 1.

AMD press release: TechPowerUp

<snip>
Through the power and performance of the Graphics Core Next architecture, "Far Cry 3" leverages ground-breaking DirectX 11 graphics features to ensure the most visually dynamic and smooth gaming experience. These features include:

  • Direct3D 11 Deferred Rendering with Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing – Taking advantage of advanced Direct3D 11 features, "Far Cry 3" employs an optimized deferred renderer including tile-based light culling and fully supporting MSAA. The efficient integration of MSAA capability provides upgraded image quality over the post-process anti-aliasing techniques used by other deferred rendering engines;
  • Ambient Global Illumination System – "Far Cry 3" features an advanced real-time global illumination system capable of computing indirect or reflected lighting, enabling more visually coherent and realistic world rendering. On the PC, this system supports global illumination from dynamic lights in addition to distant light sources such as the sun and the sky;
  • DirectCompute Accelerated High Definition Ambient Occlusion – "Far Cry 3" implements a new and improved version of HDAO that uses full 3D camera space position data to detect valleys in the scene that should be shaded darker, and attenuates the lighting based on valley angle. In "Far Cry 3" this technique has been significantly improved in both performance and quality relative to previous implementations;
  • Advanced Skin and Hair Shading Models –The "Far Cry 3" advanced physically-based shading model is combined with approximated sub-surface scattering and rim lighting to render soft, natural-looking skin. Hair shading in "Far Cry 3" also achieves its realism via a special anisotropic lighting model.
