Don't think its a spoiler but
until you do the quest that says "This action will make an enemy of x faction", you can do quests for all 4 factions. I did Minutemen and it was a little confusing in how to get the end game quests to kick off.

Battle for Bunker Hill was a 3 way battle for me too but you can pretty much walk through and decide which faction you want to help if any. For the Institute, you're supposed to use the reset codes and the courser teleports back with them. I killed my courser right away and then told the 4 they were free to go but they still appeared as objectives until I spoke to Father. Even if you mess up that quest for the Institue, I believe you can explain your actions to Father and still continue with Institute if you wish.

I couldn't initiate the end game quests for the Minutemen until I got myself kicked out of the Institute. I did that after the Battle of Bunker Hill when I explained to Father he was crazy. Alternatively, you can get kicked out by attacking/killing Father/Institute Scientists while at the Institute

Man Bethesda has always kinda sucked at narrative but they really dropped the ball on this one.

Anyone know the best location to try and find a combat shotgun? Gf and I switch playing and while I'm a few levels higher and have had one for awhile, she is still stuck with the double-barrel. I can't remember where I found mine now. We've check the skylanes flight and around College square, so at this point I'm thinking just random luck.

On my first playthrough I got very few shotguns and no legendary shotguns.
On my 2nd playthrough now and I am finding legendary combat shotguns all over the place. And stacks of shotguns in stores.

Its all crazy and random and silly.
Keep checking Diamond City and Goodneighbor as often as you can. And the Prydwin.

Pridwen?
Prydnon?
Priapism?

The first time I found one was for the mission Human Error. You need to go to Covenant to start it. One of the guards had one in the lab compound. There was also a combat rifle there as well. Then afterwards I'd find one here an there. Then I reloaded an old save and did Human Error again, and the shotgun wasnt there but the rifle was. Then I found a combat shotgun during the Greenskins mission that was started at The Slog. It was in the bank somewhere. It may be at a certain level they just start showing up...like level 15 or so.

EDIT: The fallout wiki lists some locations:

Thanks, I may have also found mine during those missions. I suppose if nothing else we can try to buy one at Diamond city.

Is there any way to respec? Sunk a ton of points into getting local leader 2 only to find out that it was a complete waste of time.

Local Leader 2 isn't really a complete waste of time. Among other things, it means you can set up as many item-buying merchants as you want, where you want them. Local Leader 1 greatly, greatly simplifies building up settlements, so if you enjoy that, it's pretty nice.

Of course there's the CHA 6 requirement to get to Local Leader, but that helps in other ways. Mostly it improves your bargaining, which is more important than it was in FO3 or New Vegas. Now and then - and not nearly as often as I'd like - there are speech checks. I'm pretty sure that the supervisor of the General Atomics Galleria would have killed me if I didn't have high CHA. He did kill me at least once when I tried being honest instead of fooling him with the CHA check. There's another way around that, of course, but it's a bit more complicated and hard to discover without getting into the buildings via the CHA check.

Gun Nut is generally plenty. As others have pointed out, it's required for energy weapons and higher level Power Armor mods, but you can do a lot just with Gun Nut.

I'm not sure how good the Science based base defenses really are. If you're going just on the defense value, they're awfully expensive for what they add to the base defense. Ergo if they have value, it must be in actual combat, and I've yet to be in a combat where my laser turrets have engaged anything. The base attacks I've seen have been in locations where I haven't built anything better than Heavy Machine Guns.

Maybe they're pretty good. The one time I ran into a laser turret in a ruin, it cooked me right off the bat, unlike the typical machine gun turrets.

LOL!

I have 14 power armours, 11 are stacked up on the roof of Red Rocket. I need to get rid of them somehow.

Think I got 12 at this point. Full Raider set, Full T-60, just got my first X-something -- not a spoiler since it's talked about in the load-screen.

All of them are parked in a house in Sanctuary.

I keep trying to take on raider and super mutant camps without power armor... so much food consumed to get through! 🙁

No excuse... I've found dozens of power thingies for the suit... just keep forgetting to run back home to get it!

I never take mine off. I have 14 cores and seem to get more all the time and don't run out. I have had to fix my armor multiple times but always wear it.

Yah I have like 30 cores built up. If you have the extra suits always give your companion one though. They don't use fusion cores, so its just extra power for you.

companions are so worthless in this game. if i give them power armor they'll just sit there and ruin it.

Its too bad you cant get a robot like ED-E in NV. That little guy was a badass. I'm going to give Codsworth another shot for the Glowing Sea mission since he shouldnt be affected by radiation. Cait with some decent armor seems like she can hold her own. In the Towers mission she just ran around killing super mutants while I looted.

which is funny cuz I've had random Minutemen steal power armor and terrorize gangs of raiders on their own.

I don't know how to give power armor to my companions. I can trade the parts with them, leave the shell sitting right near them, and they never go into it. I can tell them to go check it out, go look at it, but they never use it.

So glad I found that environment suit with 1000 rad resistance! 😀

If I had the patience for it, some great level-up techniques are the safe/computer combinations where you can hack the compy, pick the lock, use the compy to LOCK it again, then pick/lock/pick/lock your way to the next level. 18XP at a time. 🙁 *sigh*

Ain't nobaahdy gawt tahm fo' dat!

After I got the Minutemen General armor, I use this almost all the time, except when I need my Hazmat suit or to pick up a power armor in the waste land. I don't use power armor, but when I find one in wild, I have to pick one up and bring it back to my home base, as trophy. This game has worsen my compulsiveness to pick up junks, like desk fans and aluminum cans.
