Even though it's not a true MMO, you could try out Company of Heroes Online. It's currently in beta but it's supposed to be released publicly either end of this month or September. Definitely before the end of the year.

It's the CoH games, which were excellent RTSes if you never played them, but with a lot more added to the multiplayer aspect. As you play matches, you earn Supply Points and occasionally earn hero units/army upgrade. You can use your SPs to purchase these as well, though I'm assuming not all units/items are purchasable and some will have to be won. You can also spend $$$ to buy SPs. As you level up your Commander, you gain points to put into and improve the various Commander Abilities - things like airdrops, offmap artillery strikes, reinforcements, buffs for your troops, etc. The regular campaign missions are also available to be played for free if you haven't played through them.

I recommend that you read up on microtransactions. Quality of product has absolutely nothing to do with the relative benefit of either a microtransaction or traditional model. Good products will make more money using either model than bad products will, but inferring quality based on the model it is using is inaccurate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micropayment

Regardless of how you feel about them, the billion dollar ringtone industry means that consumers like ourselves will see plenty of creative strategies for introducing micropayments from here on out, be it trivial DLC like horse armor or f2p MMO models.

i think a lot of games are going to be adding in micropayments. even if leliana's song is only 2 hours of gameplay that's still a better value than seeing a 2 hour movie for $15.

with lotro you still need to get the expansions to use those areas. and moria is one of the nicest areas of any mmo i've played.

daoc had great pvp until they ruined it with toa and then further with nf. honestly all anyone wanted was a lvl 50 battleground like they added for every other level. the BGs were more fun than normal rvr.

I was going to install it but I've gotten hung up in the latest LoL patch, are there any other reactions to Allods?

My mage at level 7 was having tough time killing a level 7 bear without the incense pray buff, infact it killed me.

I think they have made it so you have to buy items to survive and level up easier, the curse items on death is one thing players in the forums are bitching about, a lot of high level players have left however quite a few new players trying the game so only time will tell,it has its good and bad points like most MMORPGs.Its a good game in its own right however has some annoying things so down to the player really if he wants to buy item shop items (to make it easier)and play through the game.

Anyway I'm going to try Alganon which I hear is going F2P,I'll get back to Allods later but not sure if I'm going to stay.

I can't stop playing Allods...

I've restarted a character just yesterday and the new build (now that I understand things better) is just fantastic, the game just refuses to get anywhere near boring, it's made out of unshakable awesomeness bricks.

Its funny I was going to ask this same question, I did some research and found this vid on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekD8Pm8yDow. I also heard Everquest 2 is free to play now too..though some of the free stuff seems limited.

The question that I would really like to know is, what ftp mmo folks are playing the most of?

EQ2x is free but it is extremely limited if you don't pay for it.

I downloaded and tried it out today. Haven't gotten very far. Just went through the opening tutorial with a few different characters on both sides, to try and get a feel for the game.

Well, the opening is rather buggy. I've had to restart it 4 times across 3 characters from npc's getting stuck, chests becoming unopenable, etc, etc. You can log out at any point in the tutorial and it starts you back over from square one, at the beginning. So, getting bugged there isn't the end of the world.

The early, early part isn't anything special. But, you can't ever judge a game from the first 20 minutes or so anyway. Hopefully once I decide on a class, and play a bit longer, I can get a better feel on how good or bad the game is.

First impression of the graphics - seemed alot like WoW. Especially the character creator.

Although it does have a few other things in common with WoW, it doesn't play a whole lot like it, at least early on. So, thats a plus.

I am wondering one thing though. The imperial side, you have humans, orcs, and then that other race...what they hell is that supposed to be, anyway? Undead? Robots? Golems? I can't figure it out :p

I am an empire sorcerer. I am level 7. Seems that my skills are kinda week, even tho i only upgraded 2 skills. I takes a while to kill my level monster. Maybe I should try out a different character.

i thought ddo was pretty good, not great but pretty good. i thought the quests were done well. since i knew i would be bored as hell in less than 3 months, it was worth paying the $15/month to get the most out of it (quests, storage space, etc.). unfortunately, for a title like "dungeons & dragons" the content is pretty thin. the higher level you are, the thinner it gets. it's pretty buggy, you won't find any real crafting, and if you play a melee character prepare to to wait around for casters to do their thing and/or save your ass. i'm quitting now that it's nothing but grinding mobs and the same handful of raids over and over.

i've decided that i'm willing to pay for a much richer experience, and for the long-term ddo isn't it.

One is an Elf Templar, the other is a Kanian Champion (Warrior), I've just reached level 13 moments ago with her, and just arrived in the third region/Allod. My Elf just arrived at Novograd, although I must say that so far at least I do prefer the game-play style that the Kanian Champion offers, more along my tastes (pure, brute melee force and physical-focused DPS-intensive powers).

Is this game solo friendly?
I don't have enough time to group and I don't want to buy stuff with real money to get some boost...

There are plenty of solo quests you can do however some quests require you to group up and kill the boss/elite mob.

Try the game since its free, you are the only person that can really judge if the game is right for you.

Make sure you use the Incense blessing buff (in your inventory) that does help.

About Allods and incense/charms basicly you can solo till ~ 20 or so without incense however past there your going to need the incense buff to kill even same level monsters. Its a good idea to find a group of friends early on to level with take 2-3 other people to kill quest monsters without incense.

The thing is a stack of 500 charms and 21 days worth of inscene run a total of ~$10 or 1000 gPots. gPotato offers "surveys" you can do to earn free cash shop currency and if you use fake information you can do 3-4 of these every week to get the gPots required for those expenses. If you go hardcore into the surveys I know someone who pulled 9000 gPots in about a month for his mount and some WoD. Thats the thing guys always plan your character early because respecs cost 900 gPots.

The RU game is several patches past the Eu and NA versions. Essentially the Allods people offered a full featured quality game and then gimped players with the most recent patch so you require incense and charms to play the way you used too. The RU players knew this was coming and had warned about it but people are up in arms anyway. Personally though I don't mind doing the surveys with a survey e-mail so I dont get the spam from them and using those gPots for charms and incense. You can get to 42 without incense or charms no problem if you have a few friends.

Well I might give it another go. I'm a Kanian Druid of only level 7 and I played with my bro who is a Kanian Magician...but there's something missing, I don't know what, that doesn't draw me into the game as Zenoth heheheh...

I should give it a real try and just take my time...I'm gonna try a Paladin next time I log but the Druid is cool to play!

Like other posters above, I found both Runes of Magic and Allods Online to be quite good.

Maybe those of us just starting in Allods should add each other to try and make playing a little easier. I've got a L4 Orc Shaman called Feroc but wouldn't care if I had to reroll on the League side if that's where more people are on Nezeb.

Good idea.

Berold - League Crusader lvl 4 - Nezeb
Hjollmir - League Druid lvl 7 - Nezeb

So are we all rolling League together on Nezeb or not? I'm currently Empire on Tensess but I'm willing to join up with you all.

I have started an Empire player on Tensess too, an Orc but can't remember the class...
Name's Hrothkar.

Probably gonna play him from time to time too!

I got a empire healer on Nezeb. Level 7 right now, name's Lecroix. I will probably stick with this character.
