F2P MMORPGs that are GOOD

I'm sick of buying time cards for MMORPGs, so I want to find a really good F2P one. I have Guild Wars Collection and have been playing Aion but don't want to pay any more. I don't mind buying the disk as long as it's free to play. Anyone know any good ones? There are thousands on the Internet but I don't know what the best ones are. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

I play Dungeons & Dragons online. http://www.ddo.com

Lord of the Rings Online is beta-testing F2P.

Do a search of the forums. There's a couple of threads discussing this.

You can play Warhammer Online for free until level 10 and if you enjoy PVP I suspect it would keep you entertained longer than a lot of other F2P games.

they don't exist...
this is one of those times where "free" is bad
And you're full of shit. Good is is the eye of the beholder. I enjoy DDO, I enjoy LOTRO (though not technically "free", yet). I enjoyed NeoSteam. I enjoyed Runes of Magic. None of them I considered "bad", and are (or will be) free.

Its funny I was going to ask this same question, I did some research and found this vid on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekD8Pm8yDow. I also heard Everquest 2 is free to play now too..though some of the free stuff seems limited.

The question that I would really like to know is, what ftp mmo folks are playing the most of?

lotro is good but open beta is only later this fall..no point in playing the closed beta now because the characters will get wiped.

I play Dungeon Fighter Online

http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net/Default.aspx

paying for a safe upgrade (costs 60 cents) makes playing a lot more convenient. there are ways to earn free credits for item shop purchases too.

I've tried that one for some time, it's fun, but I couldn't stand the low resolution and the controls, playing a beat 'em up with a keyboard is just wrong, if there was a way to map some of the basic attacks on a third party controller with enough buttons (six or so, perhaps more, like the well known and very good MadCatz's FightPad) then I would have resumed my game, but as it was when I played it my left wrist and top hand nerves started to hurt after clearing just half a dungeon (such as Mirkwood) with the Z, X, C, A, S, D keys... unbearable, it wasn't bad at all moving around calmly in towns and cities to trade and chat with people, but when it comes to fighting... uhg...

Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) and Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) are the two best products in the microtransaction market but I wouldn't label either of them free. If you never spend a penny in the store you will have a much longer and more difficult road than somebody who chooses to be a premium player or somebody who purchases things from the store. They use the microtransaction model to try to capture small payments from everybody.

Conquer Online (CO) on the other hand is more of a truly free to pay product. It is also governed my microtransactions, but they are the exception rather the the norm and the vast majority of players do not spend anything. It uses the microtransaction model to try to capture huge payments from the small portion of the playerbase who is willing to pay to win.

As for gameplay, DDO is the most innovative of the bunch with FPS influenced combat and tactical group play but is very much held back by an extremely dated interface. Group questing is very strong, endgame is average, PvP is very weak, replayability is pretty strong via rolling lots and lots of alts.

LOTRO is more like your typical vanilla third generation MMORPG (WoW). Solo questing is very strong, group questing is above average, endgame and PvP are both weak. Replayability is average via rolling maybe one alt. Combat is a little more complex than WoW or Aion if you pick one of the more advanced classes, or about the same complexity if you pick one of the beginner classes.

Conquer Online will remind you more of UO. It's an isometric chinese MMORPG with open PvP and almost no questing of any sort. PvP is extremely strong if you are into open PvP and replayability is extremely large with a high level cap, a korean-style leveling grind, and ability to re-roll your character at max level for increased bonuses.

Runes of Magic is probably the most popular asian f2p MMO among westerners, but it's not as popular worldwide which hurts its development budget.

I recommend that you read up on microtransactions. Quality of product has absolutely nothing to do with the relative benefit of either a microtransaction or traditional model. Good products will make more money using either model than bad products will, but inferring quality based on the model it is using is inaccurate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micropayment

Regardless of how you feel about them, the billion dollar ringtone industry means that consumers like ourselves will see plenty of creative strategies for introducing micropayments from here on out, be it trivial DLC like horse armor or f2p MMO models.

The problem is finding a free MMO that has great pvp. Like built from the ground up with pvp in mind, but with pve aswell.

Many have tried, all have failed. I'm still waiting for Dark age of camelot to go F2P. That would rock my socks off!

Allods Online
The Chronicles of Spellborn
Runes of Magic

I've just tried Allods Online, thanks for the heads up on that one.

It's surprisingly fun, simple, has a light atmosphere and art style, I particularly like the sharpening option in the video settings, also the music is quite decent, animations are decent as well, graphics in general are acceptable, it's fine really, the combat system somewhat reminds me of Dragon Age's (to a small extent, mostly due to the the usage of skills on the number keys).

The character customization is basic, but sufficient, classes and races are diverse, levels seem to be fairly well designed as well, the story so far isn't very compelling but a bit more complex than I expected, and the beginning tutorial wasn't a pain to go through, not to mention that I experienced absolutely no lag whatsoever, and that there were dozens upon dozens of players doing their own stuff around me as I was doing mine, the game world is thus alive and breathing, doesn't feel alone in an abandoned game.

Well, I like it... I'm surprising myself here, this is the first free MMO that I have ever felt any addiction for. Now I need to go to work soon and I feel like I could play a bit more. To anyone here, I'm recommending that you guys give it a try, it's not for everyone I know but... hey, it's fun, in my opinion, nothing "mind blowing" here, it's just a nice and addictive time burner. And, also, the Elves in that one have some magic wings on their back, fun stuff, it reminds me a bit of the Seraphim's wings in Sacred/Sacred 2 (difference being that they are animated in Allods Online, actual wings as if they were part of their body).

what happens in sept.?

FFXIV gets released. I have my collectors edition on preorder already :D

Though I may still play Allods the endgame looks very insteresting because most F2P MMOs I've messed with the endgame consists of grinding mobs that drop rare world style drops or some stupid form a PvP so you can show off in town not terribly interesting. But Allods (Being a full fledged free WoW clone) has a bunch of endgame dungeons and large scale raids that look very interesting. Also the community in Allods is large for a F2P MMO as someone alluded too earlier so I'd like ot get a chance to give these dungeons a shot.

My biggest problem with most F2P MMOs is the community. With no barrier to entry (and no CC required) they are filled with pre-pube kids hellbent on making the community as crappy as humanly possible.

That said I liked Sword of the New World. It had some unique concepts and great art direction, but at the core was a brutal grind. Perfect World isn't bad either, if you're looking for a WoW clone with "pwn people with fewer levels and less gear than you" PvP.

I prefer DDO to WoW.

Turbine had a long-running contract dispute with Atari, which resulted in very little advertising for years for DDO after its initial launch . No advertising = no new subscribers. Then Turbine implemented the F2P model (with microtransactions) in DDO. It was so successful, that (I think) they made more money than their P2P model, so they decided to make LoTRO F2P too.

My issue with DDO is while instancing all areas outside cities isn't a bad idea I always felt so alone and who wants to stand around town all day just to see other people. I understand the concepts involved but it was just a pain.

Also if you don't know a lot about 3.5 D&D character creation can be a pain. Also the cash shot is basicly required at a certain point because grinding for items (Items that are required to level up) in the game itself compared to buying said item from the cash shop is just uneconomical.

BTW Anyone playing Allods I'm on Tensess server Orc Shaman (Warden) named Zokudu. Say hi if you see me though I'm only level 6 right now.
