Extending drug testing to all students, Yea or Nay?

NYTimes story (may require free subscription)

It is looking like the Supreme Court will give the go-ahead to schools for testing anyone involved in optional activities (including things like choir, not just sports). In my opinion (and the article's, to a certain extent), it looks like eventually random drug testing could be extended to all students. It already has been in some states.

As for my opinion on the matter, I say "No". While I cannot deny that these tests may reduce drug use, you could make the argument for a lot of other practices that I would consider an invasion of their privacy.

What do you think?

Drug use and possession is illegal! It's not an invasion of privacy.

A local high school here sponsored a surprise lockdown. 16 students were arrested for drug possession in the school.

I haven't heard one parent complain about "invasion of privacy".

It's the guilty who want a lack of enforcement, not the law abiding citizens.

Yes, invasion of privacy will only find illegal activities in those who are committing them. But ask yourself this (not a perfect analogy by any means), would you like it if every time a cop pulled you over he forced you to submit to a blood test and search?

You are not guilty of anything, but I'd bet you'd still not care for it. You are using a public road, do you think they should have the right to do that?

Hell yes! We can finally get the stoners out of school. This way they cant bother the people who actually want to learn.

If you want to participate in an optional activity then I believe the school has every right to require you to take a drug test. And I hope that they include steroid testing in the tests as well.

HAHAHHAHAHA

Surprise, many of these 'stoners' are also on the honour roll list!

What if the drug testing included alcohol and tobacco? Would you all share the same views then?

I think my sig is especially true in this scenario

Where the fsck do you live?!?! :Q

Drug testing is just another sector of society where the government doesn't belong. Unless a student is causing obvious harm to himself or others it is just not necessary

To go to school, students shouldn't be drug tested. That's WAY too much money down the drain. Random locker/bag checks are suffice. Drug testing (random or otherwise) for optional things like the basketball team or debate or something is a good thing.

I've got nothing to hide, so why not? It'll settle their paranoid mind about my either being a complete psycho or just on drugs. I think there should be some sort of order to it, though. Random isn't good enough.

And besides that, WTH do some people want the USA to be? Communist Russia? Do you want the government to tuck you in to bed every night? :disgust:

AND mandatory drug testing violates the 4th Amendment.

Your average high school. Even if your specific high school's honour roll list doesnt contain the occasional person who dabbles in drugs, wait until you get into college

I know tons of "stoners" at my school who get better grades than the straight-edge crew.
Anyone who thinks pot smoking equates to stupidity needs a reality check.

Bunch of c*cksuckers in this thread. You think that you should be able to investigate students in the US to see if they are doing drugs?

Why is it any of your business? I smoke marijuana about once a month, and I don't feel I am a drain on the school system. This is BS. There is something really wrong with America's school system, they think they own everyone from the ages of 5-17. What's next, will they search your house to see if you have some porno? How about installing bugs in your house to monitor the levels of swearing? How about they check to make sure that all the kids under age 17 do not view rated R films? How about they investigate our reproductive organs to be sure we are all still vergins?

I completely agree that students should not smoke up while in school, and probably not before school. And if excessive use in off-hours is really affecting their lives for the worse, then they will surely pay the price and straighten up before a small problem becomes a big one. But let their problem be just that, Their Problem. Why does America have to make every decision for every minor? Why can't we simply learn from our own mistakes? If we are force fed every ounce of our lives until age 18, then whenever we hit said age we will be unable to cope in society. We will be mindless drones who do nothing but agree with the powerful force, because we would have been taught that resistance is futile.

Just vote YES to communism!

"If they do drugs they cannot participate in after-school activities."

Idiocy. Then the kids will just smoke some more dope because they've got nothing else to do. If anything, these kids NEED the after-school activities.

No it would be a waste of money. My parents drug test me since I got caugt smoking weed and those tests are so easy to pass.

I have smoked with quite a few kids who go to my school and are on the honor roll. The people who you think are stoners are just the dumb kids who talk about it all the time there are a ton more who don't talk about it.

Personally I think drugs should be decriminalized for adults, but I would come down hard on anyone who caused harm to someone else while under the influence of any drug, or anyone who gave or sold drugs to minors. And no I'm not nor have I ever been a drug user.
Now for the question you asked, I would have to say yes if you are going to do it for a few then it's only fair to extend it to all, and it will create a good deterrent for at least some students. On the privacy issue I think you have to balance privacy against the fact that these are minors and not adults, even adults don't have an absolute right to privacy for instance I can't claim a right to privacy in my house if I'm using it to build a bomb to blow up my neighbors house. That's just not nice! 🙂

At first I thought you guys were talking about college... Anyway, in HS, you have no rights. They can search your locker at any time. Drug testing? Hmmm... I don't know what to think about that.

Dang right they should be drug tested..and check their parents too. If they choose to send their kids to a tax payer supported institution
they and the kids should be druggy free.

Again, would you be saying that if the test expanded to test for alcohol and tobacco?

lol, you are such a moron. Smoking weed does not equate to doing bad in school or not caring about school. I used to smoke daily and I made As and Bs(in honors and AP classes). Don't give me that apathy bull sh!t. The people who smoke weed and are lazy were lazy their whole life and would be lazy if they didn't smoke weed.

I am completly against required drug testing of any kind. What someone wants to do in their free time should be their business. If they arn't affected then it shouldn't concern any body else
