This is really odd... apparently he has (had?) an attorney, but his attorney couldn't be bothered to show up in court for his plea so they used a public defender for his "not guilty" plea? Does Gates have adequate counsel or is he being pressured by Manafort's counsel to tow the line?
An easy explanation: all the available lawyers in DC have been retained by White House administration, there are no more lawyers left.

Rejoice silent Trumpists and right wingnuts! Tony Podesta is now leaving his lobbying firm in the wake of the Mueller investigation! Wow, this looks bad! Clearly he's guilty...of something (pizza child porn?)

Regardless, it looks like you'll actually have something relevant to talk about today!

Whoa, things are really getting interesting now:

Lobbying firms the Podesta Group and Mercury Public Affairs are the unnamed companies in the grand jury indictment of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates, according to three sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The indictment, unsealed Monday, refers to "Company A" and "Company B" as the firms Manafort and Gates solicited in 2012 to lobby on behalf of the Ukranian government. Company A is Mercury Public Affairs and Company B is the Podesta Group, the sources said.
...
The Podesta Group previously withheld from disclosing its work under the Foreign Agents Registrant Act (FARA), claiming they believed the group was not affiliated with the Ukranian government.

According to the indictment, the lobbying firms were paid $2 million from offshore accounts controlled by Manafort.

Oh this is good, now the wingnuts will feel they have something to point at and screem about! I'm sure the talking points folders have been distributed and we will have launch in this thread within the hour.

That will be good. But if Manafort was involved in conspiracy with Podesta as a foreign agent unrelated to Trump, I think it's purpose in coming out now is to have leverage to build the Russia case. It may have the added bonus of pacifying alt-right deflectors up until the point where the hammer drops from when these guys turn.

We all know how this will end.
Trump handing out pardons, Hillary blamed, end of story.
This is just one more shiny little object that the media will become distracted with like a cat distracted by a laser pen.
Trump will survive.
And should that heat get too hot in Trump's kitchen, Donald has the pardon card, his distracting tweets, and last but not least the nuclear codes at his command.
This media obsession over really nothing will go on and on until the next hurricane, the next North Korea missile test, or god forbid Paris Hilton does something stupid.

Something tells me that this isn't going to go away quietly. Remember, the "distraction" of the Vietnam War wasn't sufficient to save Nixon.

I am all for throwing trump under the bus - even though Pence isn't much better.... but honestly this does kinda like just a step above nothing-burger. I'm honestly predicting nothing will come of this overall (as far as an overall 'ousting' of the entire administration)....

Understand when I say this - I sincerely HOPE that it does.

So I tuned into talk radio this morning and man was spin on in full force.

They were talking to a Republican on the Judiciary Committee.

The host says, “So cnn broke the story about the arrests from the blah blah blah back on Friday. So tell me it’s illegal to leak this stuff right?”

Republican, “Oh it’s not surprising but we should look into it. “

Later the Host,”Don’t you think the timing is suspect? Like they are trying to take the heat off Hillary and the Uranium deal.”

Republican, “Oh yes and I think the committee should definitely pursue that”

Host, “maybe should even go back and look at that IT guy for Debi Wasserman Schultz who ran off”

I mean it was so transparent a spin job I was waiting for him to bring in Benghazi and Vince Foster.

Their audience buys it. They don't even question it. They believe Mueller convened a grand jury and returned indictments in four days just to create this big distraction. And you're stupid for not believing it.

You obviously missed the whole George Papadopoulos part.

There is something really interesting going on with this Papadopoulos plea and the timeline.

Podesta and DNC emails were hacked in March. Papadopoulos met with "the professor" in April, who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton and that "the Russians have thousands of emails."

The DNC hack wasn't even public knowledge until June.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Ever wonder why so many Trump friendly outlets were so keen on the Seth Rich story getting traction? The administration knew it was fake news but they pushed the talking points anyway.

It seems like the indictments of Manafort and company aren’t that big a deal to Trump, outside the fact that he hired an international criminal to head his campaign, haha. They could become a VERY big deal to him if they flip though.

Speaking of flipping, Papadopoulos seems like a HUGE deal. He’s basically saying that Trump has been lying from the beginning about collusion with Russia and is indicating the offer of a trade of sanctions relief for dirt on Clinton. That’s straight up collusion with a hostile foreign power to trade US policy favors for their help in winning an election. Basically treason in all the ways that matter. If that turns out to be true I don’t see how Trump survives. (Actually I do see how it survives but it basically means we don’t have a constitution anymore)

I keep seeing different sites that say Papadopoulos has been cooperating for two months and lots of mentions of possibly being wired up. Can't find anything solid on that though. No actual source. Just lots talking about it.

I heard similar however that was from some legal experts that said they'd send him out with recording devices. They were giving a professional opinion not stating fact at the moment.
